Barra swapped ford xf gets slammed, shortened diff and big wheels

Ойын-сауық

For many years I have wanted to build a shortened diff for my ute and run some big wheels, with the aim to do most of it myself and learn along the way. But first i had to get the tools, over the last year and a half i have built my machine shop up which allowed me to make everything i needed (apart from the axels) to shorten and build my diff, along with the tools ive spent alot of time listening to others with much more experience which was able to assist me in building the diff that i had wanted to for many years! enjoy

    looks awesome mate, quick question did you have to relocate your springs at all for clearance ? I need to do my diff soon but looks like I wouldn't be able to shorten my diff much before the disc brake caliper would be hitting the leaf springs

  • @ForrestFab

    @ForrestFab

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi mate! Nah my springs all stayed in the same place , I took 60mm off each side and I think with that amount it all runs very close to the leafs with the convos having 3.5inch back space , and I have 12mm wheel spacers to poke them out a bit because it’s not tubbed yet, but I don’t think I’d get much more then that, i built the diff to the wheels I wanted to run, so maybe you could get something with a slightly different offset so you don’t have to take as much off the Diff

    Hey man, I took 60mm off each side of a ef -el wagon diff, I don’t have an over all measurement sorry, and we’ll for comparison My wheels are 8.5inch wide and have 3.5inch back spacing, my tyres sit about 15-17mm off the leaf springs and they just slightly rub on the inner of the wheel tubs when it flex’s or I turn a corner hard, but I’m planning to mini tub it anyways :)

    And what did you do about the axles

  • @ForrestFab

    @ForrestFab

    6 ай бұрын

    Axels where aftermarket billet 28 splines, just the style that are cut to length, I let a local diff guy know how long I wanted them and he did them for me , that part is easy, once you have the housing done with the diff centre in sick a tape measure down the diff tube until it goes in where the axle does and bottoms out, measure from there to where the wheel bearings shoulders up against, that’ll give you the hard measurement of the axel length to the inside face of the bearing, then subtract about 5mm I think for memory , so the axel has clearance inside the diff centre where it slides in so that it’s not bottoming out :) Also if you are going to buy billet axels straight up you can go 31 splines for pretty much no extra cost, just change the side gears in the diff centre Also don’t even bother fuckinh around with resplined axels, they are dog shit

    Codmonster18 Luke Guerin hey dude, so I’m also running 1 1/2 blocks , I’ve just put them in when I put the convos on it But in regards to my leafs, when I got the car it was already half done by the previous owner, it looked like he had just taken one of the large leafs out so that it would sag and sit lower(not ideal at all) he may have even had them reset because they were pretty flat,this ended up causing problems for me because when he removed a leaf it made the leaf pack thinner and he just jammed a bit of rubber in the leaf spring pad (the steel cups the diff located on) to compensate, I then threw that bit of rubber in the bin when I was working on my diff one day not realising it was allowing the ubolts to still be done up all the way, once I threw the rubber out not realising what it was doing, when I did the ubolts up the spring pad and the lower shock plate touched meaning my ubolts felt tight but they weren’t actually holding the diff down which meant I had a lot of tramp because the diff was actually rolling back and forth, the car was like this for nearly 2 years and then broke almost throwing me off the road in Geelong, after I realised what had happened I brought 2 more xg full leaf packs , they were fully standard, I took one of the biggest top leaves , and trimmed it a little bit so that I could turn it upside (same way a rainbow looks in the sky ) and sit it on top of my leaf pack while they were still bolted to the car, I then took the pin out which hold the leaf pack together( this means the leafs can all fall apart so remember the order they are in) I then went a Brought 2 m10 high tensile Allen bolts (was the same size as the original leaf pin) I had some little spacers machine to space the bolts up so that it acted as a locating pin for the leaf bushing, once I had the bolts sorted I got some g clamps and compressed the factory xg leaf down on top of my leaf pack, I then grabbed another smaller leaf from the factory xg packs , turned it upside down and with another set of clamps I clamped it’s down onto of the other leaf I had just clamp down, once they are both flat put your bolt threw and do them up, some people don’t like doing this because they think it’s dodgy, it isn’t really if you do it right and it works great because pressing the factory leafs down onto your leaf pack while they are up side down forces your leaf pack to compress its self flat which makes the car lower and means you have forces pressing in both a up and down motion against each other means you have a low ride height but stiff springs that won’t tramp, you can rest your leafs just by themselves but they will be very soft and not good for anything with power, the ride will also be very bouncy I hope this helps
