The baroque bow is held slightly differently for cellists than the modern bow. Here's a lesson on my bow hold.

My gut strings are made by Damian Dlugolecki. They are the most stable strings I've found, being able to handle weather changes better than others, with great tone and resonance. You can order from him at www.damianstrings.com

I’ve been playing a modern cello for about 1 1/2 years, and since I mostly play Bach, I am exploring a baroque bow. I also play the violin, but mostly modern music. Glad to hear that the baroque bow hold is similar to violin. A local violin store has a baroque cello bow and will try it out before buying.

My baroque bow has a narrower amount of horsehair than my modern bows. I wonder about the reduced surface area having a negative impact on the amount of sound. Does the narrower hair surface have a reason or use? Can you tell us more about your bow and where you got it? How about your instruments?

I think like many things with modern times we added more of everything, so it was probably customary to use less horse hair in the baroque period and we gradually added more (probably had to do with availability of materials as well). My baroque bow is made of African blackwood and made by Christopher English, and my baroque cello is a German instrument built as a modern cello in the 1950's and converted to partial baroque set-up in the 80's by Bill Monacle.

I play a pretty similar bow on the bass viol and am pretty sure that the tip does strictly nothing, you can cut off your tip and your bow wouldn’t know it. What I feel is affecting this bow is it’s archery bow-like curve, outwards. But most of all it is the way we hold it viola da gamba style, if they forced me to play cello I’d still hold it like I do when I play the viol, for me holding the bow like a cello player is debilitating and dynamically limiting.

It changes the articulation which I guess could be considered the sound :)
