I loved it, too. The openings of old tv shows were often better than the shows, themselves. I always loved the old Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew opening(with the maze). That opening was almost ALWAYS better than the hour that followed. Shows like Barnaby Jones and Hawaii 5-0 had brilliant openings...they both set the stage for what was intended to follow...

Over the past week, I've been hearing a tune in my head. I could not figure out what it was or why I was hearing it. Today, it dawned on me that what I was hearing (in my head) was a theme from a 70s show; then it occurred to me that what I was hearing might be the theme from Barnaby Jones. KZread to the rescue! What a relief to finally "name that tune". Now, to figure out why, some 4 decades since I last saw the show, the Barnaby Jones theme was playing in my head, LOL. I don't remember much about the program, except that I always loved the theme. Mind and memory are a mysterious thing!
@rachel112263
2 жыл бұрын
It's playing in your head because it's very beautiful and you love it. The same thing happened to me with the theme from Exodus. My parents used to listen to it on vinyl when I was a child. The movie was recently on TV and when I heard the theme, it freaked me out, not only because it was so beautiful, but because I knew EVERY note of it. The music we hear in our childhood sticks with us. Finding it can be a problem though.

My sisters, niece and nephews were members of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) during the 80's and 90's and we knew a lot of people in the entertainment business. I know that Jerry Goldsmith, who is credited for having written this and other theme songs, was a Jethro Tull fan and it definitely shows in this theme. He also worked with the script writers on Barnaby Jones, which is why the song "Wind Up", from Jethro Tull's Aqualung album, showed up in the "A Gold Record for Murder" episode, which aired in February of 1974. That one featured Buddy Epson playing the song on acoustic guitar. Even though Mike Post has always been my favorite composer, this one, by Jerry Goldsmith, is definitely my all time favorite single theme song.

Jerry Goldsmith did theme and action scores better than any musical composer who has ever been. I love this theme. Jerry loved it too as he later riffed and reworked this theme for Police Story, an anthology TV series he did later that same year. Both are among my favorite TV scores from him. However, the theme for Hawaii Five-O from Morton Stevens remains my all-time favorite TV score.

Buddy Ebsen knew how to reinvent himself.
Barnaby Jones is streaming now on prime and no commercials and loving it.
My family grew up watching the show but my brothers and I loved the theme. Lee Meriwether and Buddy Ebsen were the best.

Gotta love the composition by Jerry Goldsmith and the signature performance of the Wrecking Crew. Carol Kaye's bass-line gives it away, but the whole group is strong and a keystone to so many fantastic albums, themes, and commercials. There will never be another like that group.

I miss the 1970’s, it wasn’t all milk and honey, yet enjoyed this series, that catchy theme tune. And there were others from the US at the time here in the UK, it’s now 2020, and only the Americans could make classics like this.

QM was a high class act. It's no accident Ebsen and so many other actors with high standards worked with them. I did some of their legal work over the twenty one season's they had product on the air. Professional and always on budget and on time.
One of the greatest Crime Drama Shows of all time ! It was on for 8 seasons because it was great. The acting, the music and the guest stars along with the fabulous Buddy Ebsen, quality all the way and of course produced by Quinn Martin need I say more !!!!!!!!!!

You can't have a weak show with a theme song like this.
@rachel112263

Happy Birthday Betty Jones Lee Meriwether many more to go on ..

Me, too. #1 of all time.

This song is perfect for a Marching Band.
Hollywood cats knew how to give it their all no matter the gig. There's always maximum energy and punch even in a 1 minute theme song.
pure magic
My high school band stayed playing this theme
For some reason this theme song plays in my head. I never watched the show (loved the Beverly Hillbillies) but probably watched the theme song play and then turned the channel.
Damn! I had forgotten about this theme. Fantastic.
In Ohio, reruns of "Barnaby Jones " are shown on the network known as METV from Tuesday through Saturday mornings at 4am local time.
The GREAT Jerry Goldsmith.
These were great days, my friends. It was great to be a teenager during the 70's and I would gladly trade all of today's technological advancements to go back to that time. Sure, the world had it's problems back then, but collectively mankind wasn't as uptight as they are today. Humans have lost their sense of humor....or are at least suppressing it.
Such a cool soundtrack.
The score hits
High Quality, too the fullest.
The best theme of any police show
R. I. P., Buddy Ebsen.
i love barnaby jones theme and telefilm
Wonderful
Jerry Goldsmith did theme and action scores better than any musical composer who has ever been. I love this theme. Jerry loved it too as he later riffed and reworked this theme for Police Story, an anthology TV series he did later that same year. Both are among my favorite TV scores from him. However, the theme for Hawaii Five-O from Morton Stevens remains my all-time favorite TV score.
May I have a glass of milk for Jerry? I have played this at least 1000 times and Never get tired of it so many working parts. I just [layed this again
