80 years old, he was an Old School Toolmaker! You can tell by the comprehensive-complete selection of tools this person owned he was a very competent - well rounded journeyman machinist-toolmaker! A very rare find indeed!

It's always sad to go through a dead guy's toolbox and find little personal things, or things that they'd made. The guy is watching this with a smile hopefully in the big shop in the sky...

Wow what a treasure chest of awesomeness. It’s always sad when someone passes away and leaves stuff that was part of his life’s work. I’m always glad though when, like in your case, the tools end up with someone that appreciates what they’ve got, will respect the person they’ve come from and they’ll carry on using them. The guy will be up there smiling knowing that his tools are with someone that will treat them the way he did. Great video Steve. I love tool hauls and this was a really good one. The mini lathe is really awesome. I’ve wanted one for so long but can’t decide which is a really good one for the amount of money I want to spend. Glad you’re feeling a bit better and back making great videos with awesome content.

Its a scary thought for me knowing that my lifes collection of tools and machine tools go on the open market when i die for a fraction of what it cost.Untill that day comes im going to enjoy what i have and when i die im going to haunt all my tools to make sure the next user work them correctly.

I agree. My advice is to make very clear plans for when that time comes. My stuff is going to my son as long as he will appreciate them. Other wise they will go to a school or the person of my choice.. One thing I don't want is for my stuff to be left up to the state to decide where it goes.

I'm the only kid that loved tools as much as my Dad did. He gave me a large wooden craft filled with tools that were my GreatGGGrandfathers from when he had his farm. Some of the wrenches are huge. Been hauling that crate around for years but last year I cleaned all the tools and sprayed them down. Huge them all up on a pegboard, they look so cool. If you're concerned about the future of your tools just make sure they go to someone who appreciates them.

That is quite the score there Steve! I ended up with pretty much the same assortment and quantity of stuff you did a few years ago when I bought my Bridgeport mill. I paid like $400 for 3 boxes full to the gills of tools, tooling and everything else at auction. I also scored the mill for $700 with Kurt vise, $65 for a 12" rotary table, and $10 for a 6"x 12" Harig surface grinder! I have never had a day like that since and probably won't have again, but it is definitely worth going to auctions if you can find them. There is probably $20k in those boxes if all was bought new so congratulations Steve! Someone is very happy to see those tools go to a good home to be used and appreciated for sure. Enjoy and stay well!

WOW!! Steven, you came across a once in a lifetime tool treasure. I'm not a Machinist and do not own any of those items, but I do have a machinist's toolbox which I plan to put all of my expensive wood carving tools inside of it. I just have to finish making the walnut holders/dividers for the tools to lay on so they don't bang each other. I love all of those nice wooden boxes that the different tools came in. I do have a very good idea of what those tools cost though. To buy each one of those tools would have cost a fortune, and you eluded to it being a real bargain. So good for you!! They have found a new home where they'll be put to good use once again. I'm sure the old man is looking down on you with a big smile on his face.

I know its an older video, but when you said he must have bought out a shop, I had to comment. A year or so ago, I met an older fella. Heck of a guy, mid 70's. I told him I was interested in machinist tools, and his face lit up. As he motioned for me to follow him into a back shed, he asked how much tooling was I looking for as he pointed to a plethora of tools and boxs. I was like so, yea, ya went to an auction, and he scoffed at me. Lol Then proceeded to explain that he started machining in 1968, and retired in 2013 and everything I seen he bought. I just shut my mouth, sat down and listened to his stories. I am now the owner of all his tooling, boxs, endmills, reamers, broaches, literally everything you have there and then some, kurt vices, drill vices, sine plates, olson 9 x 12 saw and tons of stuff ive never seen. Took me three trips to go down with my truck to pick it up. On my last trip, he took me into a leanto and wahlah, there sat, a bridgeport mill. Said it needed some work and any offer would work for him. I said $200 and he asked how soon I could pick it up. He explained he bought the mill in early 70's, so already 20 years old when he got it. So yes, alot of older machinist, if they needed it, they bought it. Nice looking load though.

My father was an aerospace machinist lathe machinist. When my father passed away and I inherited his tool box the only thing of real value were about 6 different common measuring instruments and his Machinery's Handbook. The item of most value was the test gauge that could discern tenths of a thousandth because he would always talk about those precision jobs. The rest of the box was filled with ground carbide and high speed steel tools that he ground for specific jobs. Leftovers and drops from past projects with little value going forward. Most likely his company supplied anything he needed from the tool room. My machine shop has everything I need and his box takes up valuable space. He would agree as he was not one to hoard things except maybe for his ground tooling. His whole spirit is in his vintage test gauge which I will treasure as I will use it to test spindle run out. A friend offered me her late husbands machinist tool box. There was nothing of value but the box itself. It would have been a burden If I took it. I have what I need and know what I need and would rather spend my time in my shop making stuff than looking trough flea markets and garage sales. 50 years ago these tools were expensive and could always be reused by craftsmen. Today these tools are inexpensive and easy to get.... until you start machining to tenths of a thousandth and then those jobs have their own tooling and economics. What is most rare and valuable today is the intellectual effort to understand and use those tools. You now have a lot more nice stuff and that is nice if you have the room for it. Has it helped you moved forward with the work you need to be doing? I hope I never come across one of those wonderful finds because it would be a serious distraction. Beware of garage sales!

You certainly stumbled across a mountain of tools. Probably more than the average working man could afford if he had to buy them as income would permit. It will take a lifetime more than likely to learn how to use them all properly and efficiently. It is said that a good and fair deal is when buyer and seller can walk away from a deal and both parties are happy. I hope that is the case here. If it is I congratulate you on a once in a lifetime discovery. Imagine if 2 or 3 machinists stumbled on these tool boxes at the same time? Hell of a score!

It was sad to know another toolmaker is gone but it's good that you rescued such a great collection of quality machinist tools! I wonder if the family knew how valuable the collection was. I have that same Kennedy Cart and chest. I got a great deal on it about 20 years ago at $550 (just to put the some perspective in the value) because it had a dent in it. I'm surprised there was not a Gerstner box (my pride and joy) but they are so nice looking that women might even want it for their jewelry ! I am curious on how much you paid. But just removing the heavy tools was a big help to the family.

I'm so very jealous of that gorgeous mini lathe, in such mint condition too! Very sad the owner didn't get much use out of it, I hope it makes many good parts for you.

I have seen some good action scores myself. My problem is I stay at home 99% of the time and don't go to actions and miss out most the time.

Steve, I would love to get my hands on that toolbox! Brilliant find. I'm really interested in making a sine plate like the one in this toolbox that you showed. Is there way you could send me some photos of it or even just some rough dimensions?

Thanks Steve for sharing your great tool our purchase. I don't thing it could of gone to a more deserving person. Is it possible to find out more about the previous owner? Where he worked? What he worked on? It would make an interesting follow up video.

Gently my friend! You can be very heavy-handed whilst handling everything, especially those paper thins stones. Great find though, looks like a lifetime of collecting. Sad non of his kids or others closer to him didn't follow in his steps...

It fantastic when a makers tool set goes to someone who's going to use the tools and appreciate them. How it should be!

I actually think he did a fantastic job taking care of his tools, he really took pride in his tools, those boxes looked better than some working machinists boxes, I love getting someone's tools because I cherish them so much, just thinking about their story and what they made, this was an incredible find, I just lost my brother 2 weeks ago and am saving all his things for when his kids are older hoping they want them, its really sad but I guess that's life...
