Excellent Video. Just got back from Riding my 1972 Honda XL250 with my friends on newer bikes. Sand, Dirt, Gravel and asphalt. Excellent time. Rebuilt my float bowls on the Honda V45. Ready to install.

..... Get a camera down inside both tanks before you put any fuel in and make sure you dont have the same issue I just did buddy :) I make mistakes so others dont have to lol

I had the same problem. Putting the carbs back on now: I’ve replaced all fuel lines, filter and pump. relined tank with POR15. Didn’t want to take off secondary tank because i heard it’s a pain but I think I’ll do it as well. If you don’t mind posting that process then I’d appreciate it!

If you had problems in your main tank it will all be in the pickup screen in the secondary - to take it down, exhaust cans off, rear wheel off, inner fender, battery, starter solenoid, fuel pump, battery housing bracket thing and the breathers, then its just a couple of bolts ( plus the 3 fuel pipes) - I will video when I strip mine down, easier to show you, but you cant really go wrong, just need to take a lot off as it goes in the frame before all of the above and you need to take it out from the back where the inner fender is

You need to install on that bike the oil modification kit to .

@davidsaunders1329 I have another auxiliary tank which ive treated with tank cleaner and liner. Cannot remember the name of the treatment at the moment, but have treated the main and auxiliary which are on the bike and runs well. I know the frustration youre going thru as I have been there

I am desperately trying not to line them, both were pretty good, but were full of dried old fuel, it was fine until I put Snowfoam in to dissolve the residue, then all hell broke loose. I will get them clean and have a good look inside both and see if they really need lining

Yes good shout if you can clean them rather than ligning them. Good luck with the carbs👍

Need a short video on how to get the front end up safely at home if possible. Exhaust stops straight under lift.

I will be doing the fork seals soon, will cover it then, but essentially, I just use a trolley jack and a block of wood between the exhausts, gives you enough room to remove the front wheel with the back wheel pushed back and onto the ground - for safety I put a tank strap around the centre stand when I do this to stop the stand folding although it has never happened to me

Thanks man, Oh, how much I would love to have a decent workshop and do this for a living, mortgage says no :) Now the good news if you like this series is that you have seen how bad it was and seen it gradually getting shiny again, I said it would be wonderful again and it is getting really close - still, remember, I have NOT restored it, just got rid of the dead parts, cleaned what was left and put it back together and learned a lot of lessons along the way. I started this channel as some mates at work wanted to know more about what I was doing with these old Honda's, really really happy to have a few hundred subscribers, couldnt believe when that went over 100. What I would do with a full workshop, Bearded Mechanic would need to watch out :)

I really want a custom tank, 20ltr and line straight to each side. Bypass and remove the reserve. Could vinegar treat it on the bike.

I was thinking the same thing, I dont want to change the look of the bike, main tank has a fat inch wide hole and pipe leading to the secondary so cant just not use the secondary and pipe straight to fuel pump or carbs unless I can make an adapter from inch to normal fuel pipe, plus you would have no reserve and no way of knowing how much fuel you had left, maybe a tank off a later VF750 may work direct to carbs without a pump? The secondary has a pickup inside it and it is that and its tube to the outlet that is plugged up, if I clean it from the inside of the tank, I still then have to pull all the crap through the pickup screen and it clogs up again, no it needs to come off to do it right, then as you say something to dissolve whatever is in there Rustolium or something - now for the good news (I think) carbs are OK, bowls had a bit in, but not much, there was loads in the tube where the fuel comes in and crosses to each carb - behind the float needles was fine I have no idea why it didnt clog the float needles and cause it to flood??? Just used a full can of carb cleaner to get all that out and just waiting for a 10 litre fuel can so I can syphon the fuel out of the main tank, then I will strip the backend down again - wont take long, get that damn tank out and clean it properly, remember there was a bit of rust in the main tank and I said 'dont think I am even gonna bother cleaning it, just put a fuel filter on and forget it....' famous last words :)

Those motorcycles have a drain volt on the bottom of that auxiliary tank

They do, but as it hasnt been undone for 40+ years I dont want to risk it, plus I need to take it off to clean it properly anyway. The crap is in the tube between the pickup in the tank and the outlet as well

Dangit ! 😕 Well, the lesson learned is: do it right from the start. No short cuts and he (Magna) will serve. I've had precisely this kinda experience with my 1961 M100 Phelon & Moore Panther. That's why I see ye Ole P. as a Sir and not a She. He's giving precise orders about what to do. No wobbling, no discussion whether or not, or maybe one can get away with some improvisation and so on. Do it once correctly and he will be friendly and never leave u alone on some lone street out there. After years of working through every single nut and bolt it ran 8000mls as a daily ready to ride machine. Sir is still ready but my knees say NO to kick start that 600cc long stroke. Good luck and lots of success and patience when cleaning the carbs. And throw away that rust stuffed tank or whatever it is. Kick it across the yard maybe best u can do 😂

Lesson learned is dont do what I do :) I make these mistakes so others can laugh at me and save themselves some time. I was thinking 'throw the tank away and get another one, cant find one other than in the US and postage is scary expensive. I can clean it, just didnt do it right the first time, not even sure its rust from that tank, there was a bit in the main tank that I also chose to ignore, I did clean the secondary tank, so maybe it came down from the main tank???

Damn damn. Ive been procrastinating dealing with the rust in my tanks wondering how best to do it. Im thinking BBs and wd40 or pb blaster in the tanks and shaking them like hell for hours on end somehow. Im not sure about what type or brand of the lining stuff to use just yet.

My line was 'I am not even gonna bother cleaning it, I will just put a fuel filter on it and call it good'.....wrong!!!! I really, really dont want to line both tanks, they were pretty good, I just didnt clean them properly, now I am paying for it - my fault entirely Por-15 is pretty good as others have said, but would rather have clean steel

@ThatOldHonda yep I recall you saying that. I do remember Sherwin-Williams(paint store here in the states) sells a spray that turns rust into a primer coat. I've only ever used it on metal roofing. Not sure if it's usable in a fuel tank. Still just glancing at good or refurbished tanks, for a decent looking one the price is outrageous.

Yeh am gonna strip the carbs back down fully, while its raining for the rest of May, ordered a 10Ltr fuel can, some new fuel filters 10 of them, plus an ally fuel filter that's cleanable and while I was at it found a very expensive fuel filter, and it needs a back tyre and I have ridden it a total of about 30 miles so far...... moan moan moan :)
