Barn Find 1980 Harley-Davidson Survivor Shovelhead FXB Sturgis Resurrection Billy Lane Choppers Inc

Ойын-сауық

Willie G Davidson traveled to Sturgis in 1978 & took particular notice of the many 1% outlaw-styled SuperGlides at the rally. With this in mind, he designed the blacked-out, limited edition Sturgis FXB model for release in 1981. Trimmed in orange, with longer front forks, the Sturgis was the test bed for future belt-driven models. Phil Ross from SuperMaxx sold the Kevlar belt technology to Harley-Davidson. Only 1,470 were built, most were customized, but this survivor remains locked in 1980. A few tricks to getting it back on the boulevard.

And let me say Billy Lane is one of the best bike builders ever!! He brought so much to the bike building world, now a days it's glue on gas tanks and BS Billy would make gas tanks and fenders and put blood, sweet and passion into projects and still does. I'm glad to see him doing well, he had a hard time but overcame it. I salute you sir.

I graduated high school in 1980 and the Harley dealer in my neighborhood had a sold Sturgis sitting on the showroom floor. I fell in love with that bike when I saw it. Tell your buddies if that thing wasn’t sold it would be mine. Yeah right no way possible at the time. Sadly other priorities took over and I never was lucky enough to get my dream bike. I keep telling myself that’s why they’re dreams. I’m not giving up you never know. You take care and stay safe brother.

Loved this video. Love that bike, what a beautiful beast the Sturgis was. The very first Harley I ever rode was the 1980 Sturgis . My brother in law, bought it in 1980 brand new. He was such a good guy, I was seventeen, had a Suzuki. He wanted my first Harley ride to be on his new Sturgis. Wow , seeing this video was a blast from the past. What a great job on that bike. I have a 1981 Low Rider. I bought a matching frame/motor/title and already had most of the stuff to put it back to stock. Only deviation is it’s getting a 1977/78 charcoal gray paint job which I’ve loved since seeing these bikes brand new back in the late ‘70’s/early’80’s. These are cool motorcycles.

Not seeing any mention of it... but... if I remember correctly the 80 Sturgis was dual belt drive... it was the first belt primary/belt final drive. Not a real big deal but does add a bit of special. I still have my 78 Superglide... bought new. Although it sat in a flood under 7 feet of water in a guys shop 2 years ago... Fresh water luckily... so far I have only cleared all the water out and pumped first wd 40 through everything... then motor oil. There's fucked wiring because it was in the shop getting a new headlight bucket. I put the new programmable Dyna ignition in. But I ran the same S you have there from 1990 until the flood. Will be starting it this winter hopefully. Great bikes. Lots of personality. Vibrate a lot compared to newer machines... I pulled the stock toaster oven air box off day 1... I ran a Mikuni for a lot of years. Then settled in with a Zenith Bendix with adjustable main jet. She has close to 50,000 miles on her without any major work. Still has the stock valve guides. I was putting Marvel Mystery oil in the gas for years... don't know if it actually helped but most everyone did valve guides by 40,000... Didn't smoke when it last ran 3 years ago. Unless hot August weather after a hard run on the highway it would puff a bit on decel. By the way my neighbor had this exact bike in 1980. Can't wait to see how this one turns out Billy...

@@BillyLaneChoppers I remember my friend Andy being excited it was belt belt. He was my dad's age. A trucker. He taught me how to drive big trucks... I taught him how to ride bikes. He's gone about 10 or 12 years now. My second dad. Taught me about guns too... First time I ever went over 100 was him driving. In the Jersey Pines. Not sure. Maybe they were all black like that with the red emblem. He was a riding mofo... take a 75 mile trip to the shore and turn it into a 200 mile tour. Waist gunner on a B 17... Your bike reminded me of him as soon as I saw the tank with the emblem. Love your vids brother.

It’s pretty amazing how using a long rod will show me how wrong I am about alignment. I have long 1/4”, 5/16”, 3/8”, & 1/2” rods I use to double check myself. I had a 1993 FXRS that I used to ride from Florida to Ohio & back monthly. They’re great bikes. Mine was lowered with a big cam, BUBS exhaust, & speedway handlebars. Other than that, it was stock. Great motorcycle.

Father and I got a 83 fxrs frame and now I’d like to part together an old 1340 shovel to keep it period correct and ride even if I have to wrench on the side of the road. Nice find Billy , a buddy bought a 1980 Sturgis , $8200 cdn. He put over 50,000 miles on it . I purchased a FLH Classic same time , we travelled all over North America with those 2nd generation shovelheads . I currently have a black 1998 Dyna Superglide Evo , picked it up last yr . Only 18,000 original miles & one owner bike , which had been stored for 5 yrs . Nice to get my knees back into the wind brother !

Love it , still dropping knowledge and doing your thing. I’ve learned immensely from you over the years Billy. Always liked the Sturgis and that sleeper look is something I’ve always dreamt of doing, like the crusty but used daily and put away wet look haha. All the best from 🇨🇦

Way to go Billy, I got a 09 FatBob only 12.5miles on it, I like Dynas more than Softails … My dream bike would be any bike with a good strong knuckle head in it I feel that they are the best looking engine ever made by Harley Davidson but Always enjoy your videos all the way from New Zealand ✌️😎👍

I really appreciate the details in your comments as you process the issues and remedies, possibilities of restoring and or customizing in your videos clips. Would be cool if you consider having sponsored weekends so the younglings coming up could gather the Years Of Experience you share so well on your vids, but live! I like promoting...

I've watched a lot of your build videos. Some of the fab/mod stuff that I'm familiar with I still love watching and hearing your explanation of each item in detail. That pointless dent removal technique dropped my jaw! Great work!
