Barn Doors Built to Any Size

I have door openings to storage spaces in my house that are unique sizes which call for a different approach to building doors. I took a suggestion from a viewer of another video and came up with an inexpensive way to build hollow core doors of any size or thickness. This video shows how I took a five foot bifold door frame and cut it down to 40 inches, then built two barn doors for that door opening. Rather than a standard door height, this project was further complicated because the door height was about 12 inches shorter than a standard door. I was also able to give the new doors a raised panel look to blend with the other doors in the house.

Always nice to hear from you Mr. Wilsher! Yep, one and the same but in northern NM now. I'd wondered if you were might be the same Danny Wilsher I used to know, but what were the chances? Glad to have you checking out my channel and commenting. Hope all is well with you.

One and only!!! Both ways!!! I have been subbed for a few months enjoying what you do here. I also did a lot of wood working, building, along the same lines as your videos. Didn't think you would be the same Rusty but I was hoping and thought it was worth a shot. We are going to Carlsbad next week to visit family. Do you still have ties there? All is well I suppose, Harvey took everything I have worked and accumulated all my life but it's all good. We are starting over and making it happen. Slow but we will get there. How is northern NM?

No family still in Carlsbad. Still get down there every November for a quail hunt with Boz Green, who you may remember. He and I have been doing that for 30+ years. Harvey was a tough situation. Hard to imagine what that must have been like to go through. Sorry to hear you caught the brunt of it, but sounds like you have a handle on it. That's one nice thing about northern NM. Really no threats from Mother Nature to speak of. Rare occasions of brutal cold snaps and snow but short lived and that's about it.

Nice build Rusty , but maybe you should make two small notches in the middle of the steel rail for the rollers to sit in , that way they will keep the doors closed and centered , and a slite push will open them up .

Yeah, F, I have been thinking about something to stop the doors from going past the center line when they are rolling. I had to do a lot of adjusting to get the reveal right where the doors come together and notches might mess with that. Plus, I'm not sure with the design of the wheels and rail if that would work without bigger notches. The wheels kind of ride on the top edges of the rails. Thinking maybe some kind of small clamp in the middle that the wheels bump into but still let the doors close completely. We'll see. Always good to hear from you!

I know what you mean, Frank. The first time I do something new, it's takes the time it takes. The next attempt takes half the time or less. Pretty soon, you're a some what pro!

Looks great! Do you ever have issues with the bottom inside of the doors scratching the walls?

  • @RustyDobbs

No, Maple, never have had an issue like that. The barn door hardware typically causes the door to hang a half-inch or so away from the wall. Thanks for your comment and for watching!

Thanks for being the first to point that out, Two Tops Turning! I knew it was coming! When I first started working on the project I thought about moving it to the inside of the closet. As it turned out, it clears the door fine when it opens. I think I'll quickly learn to flip it on before opening the door but if not, there is still enough room to turn it on with it open. So, for the meantime I'll probably leave it as is... unless it starts to bug me! Thanks for the comment!
