"I am not gonna leave a Barkas behind" ha ha you are a legend. It is absolutely fantastic, that you brought these cars to America. Having even several of them makes it just more amazing. It looks funny when you drive the car on this rural streets in Kentucky. If you would have said to the driver of that specific Barkas in the GDR that one day his car will drive through Kentucky he probably would have laughed it away because it was so unthinkable then.

Childhood memories.. I grew up in eastern germany. My father had a repair shop for Simson mopeds and a Barkas was his delivery- and our familycar. It was a retired ambulance car and very old. A private person would have had no chance to buy a new one. Remembering the vacations we went on in this car, I wanted to buy one and restore it, but then I decided for a ROBUR B21. Now it's the 6th year that I'm working on it and hopefully I will finish it this summer.

Great story thanks! I have a few Simson bikes as well! A 1959 425 Sport and a Schwalbe. The Barkas is an advanced collector car. Most people don’t realize this. Not only the parts are scarce now, but it was a complicated design. Just try to adjust the front hub bearings for example…. I always loved the Robur bus! That air cooled diesel engine is very strange…. I wish you luck with your restoration! I’ve been to a classic car show where I’ve seen many commercial vehicles too. There were several Roburs as well! I’ve made a video of it. It was north of Chemnitz in a small town.

@@budapestspeedshop Thank you! I agree: The Barkas was, when it came out in 1961, ahead of it`s time and very advanced. Front engine, front drive, low floor, the suspension... If you like, you can have a look at my bus on my channel. "Robur Bus Restaurierung Teil 1" is a slide show with a lot of photos. It's very cool to see east german cars driving in the USA and I wish you a lot of fun with them! Greetings, Peter

I remember when in early 90's I just started working for MALEV Line Maintenance as very young aircraft engineer and I hired an old Barkas from MALEV that was part of a reserved fleet of them no longer in use. We made a journey from Budapest to Prague with friends of which I was the only driver but with only a tiny little driving experience. We made it but with my old mind I don't undersand how I dared to take such a responsability. This is when bravery couples with sedulity. No mobile phone, no GPS no nothing, but only 2 boys and 2 girls in a crap old Barkas. And itnwas in January of course😂

They're also getting very rare and pretty expensive here in Europe :( Kinda want one as a camper van and use it later as a working/hauling vehicle. Tho seeing as how diesel engines aren't allowed to drive down town in cities here anymore, I'm afraid 2strokes will be denied soon too. And 90% of why I like IFA/DKW/Wartburg/Barkas is because of their 2 strokes. Also currently in Europe these B1000's go for 4 times as much as a Wartburg 353 goes.

Two stroke engines are part of the appeal to me as well. I’ve heard of all the insane regulations in Europe and in the U.K. as well. I wish they would exempt the old cars so history could be preserved…. Barkas prices ran away but people don’t realize that a Barkas IS an advanced collector car. Not for the faint hearted…. I have a “parts department” to keep mine running…. Most camper vans I’ve seen were modified to 4 cylinders so they can cross a hill…I’ve seen some for sale in Hungary, try www.hasznaltauto.hu or www.vatera.hu

sorry for the correction! The GDR license plate is not from Leipzig. This vehicle was registered as a commercial vehicle in the city of Apolda! The license plate is composed as follows, the first letter L stands for the district of Erfurt (Thuringia), E was distributed over several cities, the numbers indicate from/to whether the vehicle was registered as a passenger car or commercial vehicle or in which city! In this case, LE 00-01 to LE 37-15 are registered as commercial vehicles in the city of Apolda! The license plate LE 24-80 is exactly in this range.

I wonder why did someone put this van into a video game. In real life it’s an unreliable POS, or I could say it’s “guaranteed to brake soon” design. So when these are running (and stopping) it’s a great day! Perhaps this is why I like them😅 American manufacturers also made similar vehicles. Ford had a front engine version, Chevy had the rear engine Corvair van. Now those were much more reliable.

@@budapestspeedshop The video game is called The Long Drive and is made by only one guy from Hungary I believe. The newest update added a few Barkas and Wartburg variants. It also features Trabants and Skodas. I've always found older vehicles like this to be neat, and the more odd the better! I find it interesting that two-stroke engines were used for larger vehicles and enjoy the angry weed-eater sound! I also love small vans and regret selling my 1970 VW bus. After watching you explain the suspension and the bearing adjustment and the rarity of parts, I'll keep my Barkas experience digital, where it works every time and doesn't breakdown 😂.

Was your old car spotting book called auto parade? I bought all of them and seen many of my cars from the past Audi was always present. In the 30’s there was a merger where they’ve merged 4 brands. Audi, DKW, Horch, and Wanderer. After the war Audi and DKW went to West Germany and they’ve retained the auto union sign (4 rings after the Olympic games what happened in Germany during Hitler) Horch become Trabant and Wanderer sort of become Wartburg. You are not correct about the licence plates in East Germany - they did not resemble the town by the start letter(s), instead they were sorted from north (Rostock got A, Cottbus got Z) to south, Leipzig had first the Letter S, latter they added U as all with S were used.
