Barbie - Women Speech (America Ferrera)

Фильм және анимация

Powerful 'Barbie' Monologue About Being a Woman.
"It is literally impossible to be a woman. You are so beautiful, and so smart, and it kills me that you don't think you're good enough. Like, we have to always be extraordinary, but somehow we're always doing it wrong.
"You have to be thin, but not too thin. And you can never say you want to be thin. You have to say you want to be healthy, but also you have to be thin. You have to have money, but you can't ask for money because that's crass. You have to be a boss, but you can't be mean. You have to lead, but you can't squash other people's ideas. You're supposed to love being a mother, but don't talk about your kids all the damn time. You have to be a career woman but also always be looking out for other people. You have to answer for men's bad behavior, which is insane, but if you point that out, you're accused of complaining. You're supposed to stay pretty for men, but not so pretty that you tempt them too much or that you threaten other women because you're supposed to be a part of the sisterhood.

Men are allowed to walk around shirtless in schools and show it off on social media and get praised for it, while if us women were to show even a little bit of skin, ppl will say that we're asking for it. Instead of altering the dress code and saying that we dress inappropriately just for wearing a spaghetti strap tank top, maybe teach boys to keep their hands to themselves. Oh, and there has never been a US female president. And it was a long and hard fight before we finally got the right to vote. And men have had this stereotype abt women saying that they are just to cook and clean, well guess what. This is very good advice. It's really hard to be yourself, and no one can command you to be the way that you are, but once you finally do it, it's so powerful that it overwhelms everything else you've ever been told, the truth of it sears and damns you as much as it sets you free. It hurts and empowers you into a force that others cannot ignore, cannot begin to stand against. This year I finally set myself free, and nothing has ever felt so good, so right, and it terrified me as much as it awed me. Who I am is a fearful and powerful creature that I've only just come to terms with, I'm so much more than I ever let myself believe, and I hope that everyone, both men and women, are able to do the same, so that we all might be free.

I think that each gender has its own problem, and the hate the Barbie movie gets is based off the fact that the movie is a female point of view- hence the speech. If it were a Ken giving the speech, it would be the problems that men face, and that would be fine too. This speech is meant for Barbie to felt seen. For someone to know they aren't alone and that things are hard and that's how it is right now. Yes men and women both struggle, this is simply representing a feminine perspective because it's coming from a woman to another woman. It doesn't mean that men don't struggle, it is simply acknowledging the pressure people from a feminine perspective face because Barbie isn't aware of that in this movie.

@@gaymer5697 100% it is phrased as if men don't have these problems. I'd say, these are the problems, that if men complain about them, society goes boo-hoo. Because these are the lesser problems of men, that we can solve easily, if we man up! I mean, when she says, you're not allowed to ask for money... Women get money thrown at them without even asking! People work for money, and after payment arrives, there's no other income for men. None! If we get a free beer, that is from our buddy, too. Well, women get free stuff. If they are not ugly, they can leech on men with no end. The only thing, that feminism changed on that, that they feel used, when they give something in return, because they shouldn't. But when men don't give free stuff, then they are cheap, and if they don't make enough to not care about money for two, then they are losers. Frankly, women can't complain about that, so they complain like every people's struggles would be just theirs. I can see the Barbie movie as a satire to highlight that for women, but they missed the mark on that. Sadly.

And this only scratches the surface. You're not allowed to be a career woman, because then people think you're neglecting your family. You're not allowed to be a homemaker, or a single mom, because people think you're a strain on society. If you have trouble being a mother, everyone thinks you're abusive or neglectful. We're not allowed to be feminine or tomboyish because the former is vilified and the other is exploited, and both are played against each other. You're always blamed if your marriages or families falls apart. No one listens to you when you are hurting. Instead, they blame you for your own misery. Sometimes they try to make you think you're the villain. You're judged for how you dress and present yourself. The system plays you and other women against each other. And even if one of us actually DOES do something bad, we're all blamed for it and it's used to make people think the patriarchy is good. So we can either accept responsibility for one bad woman, or we can defend ourselves, and be punished for it. I've even learned of some women who are so afraid of this, that they have defended bad women. Not because they care about her, but because they know it will lead to the patriarchy getting worse.

This scene changed my life. And I’m a guy. It messed me up… I’m a good way. Not only did I realize how unfair the world is to women, and I mean I always loved women. I’m a bisexual Autistic guy, and most of my friends are women. With that said, this even as a “dude” I felt/identified with this scene tremendously. The patriarchy doesn’t only affect women, it even affects other men. As someone who is Autistic, I am always judged for my special interests, stimming, and hyperfixations, and always told I’m “too much” or “weird”. Because with Autism there are a lot of double standards. Where for example people are okay with violent BPD/bipolar outbursts but shame autism meltdowns, or if you have both the devil incarnate. Or how neurotypicals (non autistic and adhd people) can talk about sex jokes and when we do, we’re profiled as creeps. Or how being lgbt, well I identify as a demiguy, but dress and talk masc but some times I’m fem, and I’m told “you aren’t NB because you don’t act it” or “not bi because you don’t act it” and don’t even get me started on the “you don’t look autistic”. Another thing people don’t know about is inspiration porn. It’s those things like “the only disability in life is a bad attitude” and things like that actually are objectifying Autistic people in the same way many men objectify women for sex, ND or NT. Autistic women are often expected to act “prim and proper” and calm, and when they get upset are always vilified. I know bc I’ve seen it happen with one of my best friends whos a female Autistic. They also try to make us conform with this f*cked up therapy called ABA therapy, which is conversion therapy for Autistics, and it was invented by the same dude too. Hell even the Ken story arc is relatable … for not the reason you’d think. I may have a crush on gosling in it, but if there’s anyone relatable for me, it’s weird Barbie and Allan. Who I both think are absolutely autism-coded. Even ken too, but for a reason that may confuse you all. Well, because when he discovered the patriarchy, I often relate it to how many Autistic men discover extremist groups like the redpill or incel forums, and how many become misogynistic, and because of people like Chris Chan, the Sandy hook guy, Jeffrey Dahmer and the Toronto van attack guy, autism is unfortunately over represented in incel groups, which is why many women (nd and nt) and even NT gay men tend to pigeonhole Autistic men and profile them as some form of criminal or predator. Ken then making Barbie land patriarchal reminds me a lot of internet cults, or following popular opinions. Allan I related to because well. He felt like an outsider to the kens, and cared about the Barbie’s. I never agreed with many things my guy friends did, in fact I was always repulsed by their obsession with sex (especially given I’m demisexual), and how even in both lgbt and autism communities I feel like an outsider, and how some Autistic and neurotypical dudes when I came out became homophobic, but when it was my Autistic guy friends being homophobic, it really stung. Or same thing with fellow lgbt people being ableist. At the end barbie and Ken acknowledge each other, and while they aren’t together, still respect each other. Hot take too: I think BOTH sides of politics are completely misunderstanding this movie. It’s criticizing both extreme feminism AND extreme masculinity. Everyone saw this film and Oppenheimer on the same day. But the better double feature in my opinion is this and ninja Turtles mutant mayhem, since that’s about boys being accepted, and it shows the sensitive and “teenage” side of the teenage mutant ninja turtles, where all have different personalities, with Raphael having anger issues. They also meet other mutant who turn out to be evil, because superfly wanted to fear revenge on humans, and he basically turned the other mutant into his cult, again reminding me of those extremist groups, on top of their dad, master splinter being overprotective because of his disgust for humans, and his character development where he fights superfly, despite initially liking each other due to hating humans, but in all, his sons mattered to him. At one point too superfly wanted the turtles powers for evil, kind of like inspiration porn or even ABA. Him and the Mattel CEO when you think about it, have similar intentions. And in the end the turtles are accepted into society, and it’s a very powerful story of acceptance at that. Not to mention it’s velma done right, since they use the references in that to expand the story, and Ferris Bueller in particular being used as motivation for them, which I loved due to that being one of my favourite films and a film nerd. Anyways, part of the reason I think this and TMNT mutant mayhem would make the perfect double feature: they’re both about growing up. Ones about girls growing up and how their role in society is important. Whereas the ninja turtles feels like what goes on underground near the Mattel building, and about boys puberty, how they also want to be understood, and not like other guys (or humans, or mutants), and how who influences you can take a toll on you. I saw both on the same day, and I cannot tell you how empowered I felt when I left the theatre, like these were films I needed when I was a kid/teen, and I know often due to pressure im afraid of telling people movies like those, as well as across the spider verse and Nimona are all some of my new all time favourite movies, like they moved me big time (except across the spider verse, which is a new favourite by almost everyone), with miles and expectations people have on him, and where they try to tell him how to live his life, like me with autism where NTs often tell me I’m rigid in my views on autism, or I miss social cues or get mixed messages. Movies are freaking magical lemme tell ya.

I have 2 sisters and I love them so very much, but sometimes I wonder if my sisters ever think of how unfair the world is; of how hard they get it. I wonder if they every think that I get thing easy just because I am a man.

Men have put rewriting history to cast themselves as victims. Like just now. Also being a leader that's was femininism . Much of speech the Barbies should have related to before the Ken's took all responsibility. And pointing out woman's bad behaviors accused woman . Even though we flat more Judgement to not blame first it dad walking out men no excuse abandon their families no how it heart ego but then it when looking at statistics that 70% of divorces were filed by women. Then every homeless divorced dad was an abuser &or should have made his wife appreciated. And justifying Abandoning your kids when more do it . You have to anti conspiracy theory when actuall laws and to point to yet Believe massive conspiracies like patriarchy or systemic racism. Based fact those lose on

Please know that the women were only looking at you to gauge your reaction. They wanted your approval but they were afraid of your reprimand, because we have always been afraid of feeling powerful before the gaze of men. Such things usually mean trouble for us, a challenge that we often cow to. They looked at you for love, and by the sound of it, they got some approval with great relief. We don't want to fight you, we just want to be accepted and acknowledged as equals. I know sometimes that must feel like an attack on you personally, but please know that we all understand that no single man is responsible for how we feel. We don't want to fight you, we just want not to be judged, just like everyone else, man or woman.

Many of you are missing the point of this monologue. Everything Gloria says is just the reality of being a woman under the patriarchy. Every time we want to work to be thin we're called anorexic and told that real men love curves. But the second we gain weight we're called fat. When we want to be assertive at work or school we're called bitches or too bossy to work with. When we get raped or harassed or anything by a man, it's somehow OUR FAULT and we're considered responsible for their behavior. And when we try to follow beauty standards we somehow get criticized for it. I know this because in the early 2000s I thought I was fat despite being in 3rd grade at the time. If the patriarchy can do that to the self image of a 3rd grade girl, just imagine being called bossy for trying to take charge, or being called a liar after being sexually assaulted despite having receipts and being told it's your fault it happened.

So when she says patriarchy is she referring to the movie only, or is she (the directors and producers) implying that the patriarchy is a parallel to the real world we live in? I don’t deny that those contradicting expectations exist-I think many people deal with trying to find balance in their life while trying not to listen to “society.” I think many of those who have both negative and positive things to say about this monologue understood it in a similar way as you did. The problem is she’s just whining and complaining about it instead of saying something encouraging and productive.

I’ve actively seen countless women have to deal with the things being talked about in this monologue. It’s true whether some dudes get offended or not.

Men have systemic issues that we have to deal with as well (some of which the movie DOES cover, it has a whole B plot-line about it), but it’s literally a BARBIE movie so of women’s issues would be the main focus.

As a woman, am I the only one who feels like most of this can also apply to... men? Like, I get the part about the body standards. But what about asking for money? People look down on men for asking for money too. Men also are pressured to be the boss without being mean. They also have to be leaders while including others' ideas. That's not just a women thing. These days, men experience more societal (emphasis on SOCIETAL) pressure to be good fathers than women do to be good mothers. Men are supposed to have successful careers, and still have to look out for others too. But men aren't allowed to complain either! They have to be careful with how they treat women, or else they're accused of being flirtatious. Men aren't supposed to be rude, or show off or be selfish, just like women. They can't fail or show fear, or else they're weak. And no one thanks them for what they do either. They're also always doing everything wrong. Whatever happens is ALSO their fault. Even male characters are held to these standards, just like Barbie was held to women's real life standards. Even if they're not the exact same issues, they're equivalent. Please don't take this personally. Women have these struggles too, and I'm not denying it. Idk, it's just my opinion 💕

Everything she says is true...but I can't help but think that it is true about most of us, not just women, though women have a more decidely true grip on what is expected of them because they have been torn down, or tried to be torn down since time immemorial. Saying that, it is true for most of us, always seeking to be better and not achieving that because someone will always be better....more attractive, more attentive, more loving, more loved, better than what we can ever be. All we can do is try our bests to achieve a comfortable place where we know we've done our bests and give the love we offer and hope for it to be given back. It all does come down to love, in the end. Being wanted, cherished, appreciated. Perhaps if we were simply more vocal in appreciating those in our lives, and they were more vocal in their appreciation of us, we would all be content. "Content" isn't fabulously happy but maybe fabulously happy is too grand a goal. No one is and those who say they are, are lying. Yes, we have fabulous moments, days, maybe even weeks...but it won't last, until the next time we have occasion to be fabulous, and there is allways a next time, if we are willing to be watchful for those times. I don't think anyone shold settle, for lack of a better term, but be more aware of when that magic is there, right in front of us, and grasp it. A little magic goes a long way, for all of us.

Every day in life I am stuck between work vs personal life, and every day, I am punished for "being too much", too passionate about my work, too emotional about my expectations, too much of a career woman who lacks empathy but also too much of hysteria because I cannot be the sweet diplomat in my personal life. Too much, and not enough. And always, always wrong. This speech is the balm that in some place in the world, there is a similar woman like me who is sitting with the same pain I feel every day - a kindred spirit who refuses to apologize for who she is. When this speech first came, every woman in the movie theatre was clapping and I was still crying, crying in relief that I am not so incredibly alone.

The arguements in these comments are the problem. Both men and woman should be able to feel validated when discussing emotional issues. Problem with men is they don't want to be held accountable for having apathy and having no emotional understanding of woman. Woman see their feelings being squandered and feel like we should not care how the men feel because they can not be compassionate towards us. Then it becomes a my problems are bigger than yours. Main issue stressed in the movie. Men have more power than woman. Are paid more in jobs still that men and women can do. Have more opportunities than women do. Only care how they look "sometimes" in front of women. Women for years have to look good for everyone, themselves, men, PTA meetings, etc. Movies have thin twig good body woman have set high expectations and you are supposed to look good or you do not get anywhere if you are a female. You are a nerd, a geek, get picked on by men and women both. Some jobs deny woman because they aren't pretty enough. The list goes on and on and on for both. Arguing who has the most issues isn't going to solve it. Both sides need to take accountability and have empathy for each other and then instead of being a competetion, things can go down a productive road and change.

As a woman who loves films, I thought this movie was poorly directed and the script throughout the film could be written much better. They spelled out everything leaving the audience nothing to think about for themselves. This monologue just did not feel natural or organic at all, it could have been conveyed more effectively without sounding too forced or preachy. The character development and arcs in generally were also not resolved properly in this film, Greta made poor use of plot devices that felt like an afterthought. Anyone who thinks this film is a masterpiece or 10/10 should really watch more movies. The set pieces were incredible in this film and the casting as well as the concept was on point, I just think it could have been executed much better.

I was living with a guy who didn't want to be in a relationship but wanted relationship benefits. I was done being treated like a doorstep so I kicked him out. He threw out my tv, put a hole in my wall, and just degraded me in every sense of the word. And he got arrested for harassing two women in my apartment complex. He's in jail now but I still feel bad because I made the call that got him arrested. A little after this scene there was one where Barbie said she didn't want to hurt Ken's feelings even though he did so much to hurt her. And she was like, it's like I'm a woman already. After being totally toyed with. And it snapped me out of my depression. Cuz f#@k that man.

And women leaders and Career woman are not products of patriarchy. Infact the Barbies should have related to the speech before the Ken's took all responsibilities. And your called mysonygist for Calling out women's bad behavior objectively analyzing their claim before just believing them. We flat shift more standards to not blame women. First it was Dad's walking out on kids . They have no excuse no matter how much the wife and damaged their fragile male egos. But after looking at statistics that 70% of divorces were filed by women. Now every homeless divorced dad was an abuser and Should have made his wife feel appreciated.. And no those same feminist are sympathizing with women's desire abandon their families. . Your supposed to be anti conspiracy theory when actual examples lows corruption is pointed out . Theory witch means your model was actually based on evidence. but also believe STORIES of massive conspiracies like patriarchy or systemic racism. Because some people lose despite all real world favors to receive the stuff conspiracy fables. Based on the fact they lost. Its noticable pattern . Anita Hill OJ Simpson Decades of court cases on policy brutality and Kyle Rittenhouse. Kavagh investigations and 2016 they the system is fundimementally corrupt based on fact they lost . But when their actually corruption to point to. My conviction because they bared information on my accusers to protect their credibility. And 2020 because they forced out poll watchers.
