    I think Keith was originally a squatter there to kill Tess not knowing there was more to the house and was originally going to try and kill her in the tunnels he just found not knowing there was someone down there already, that's why he didn't want her to go back to the entrance. I think he found the phone and saw the texts to Tess about the air bnb, he didn't go to the door till after she called the phone and no one picked up. There's also the fact that AJ's lady he called said no ones checked into the house for weeks.

    The homeless man is juxtaposed with Tess. The homeless man’s history is clearly tied to the neighborhood and might have been one of the owners who decided not to leave or got caught by the crisis in the 50s. As far as why the stuff still happened, they showed with Tess that appearance and location make all the difference. They likely thought he was crazy and paid him no mind and people probably had the same reaction Tess had to him and thought he’s just some crazy homeless guy that was aggressive. Given the status of the neighborhood and then seeing this guy run out of nowhere why would anyone believe him?

    DON'T READ!!! MINOR SPOILERS!!!! {also sorry for any typos!!} LOVED THIS REVIEW!! My friend/coworker recommended this to me saying it was basically one of the best horror films they'd seen all year. And even before their praise I was already impressed and intrigued by the trailer. So of course I went in with high expectations. I loved absolutely EVERYTHING about the first act EXCEPT that I feel like Keith was killed off too fast! They had a really nice dynamic going and I feel like if they had added one more day for them to grow closer or heck even a make out scene it would have made it even more surprising to see him die! For me I already knew he wasn't the killer going in, or at least I HOPED he wasn't because that would have been too obvious and I would have been disappointed. But as she started to soften up I was confused?? which is good!! I back tracked thinking wait is he actually the killer?? I just wish they had played on their chemistry more because to me it seemed highly unlikely for someone, ESPECIALLY A WOMAN {we're generally taught to to be extra careful with strangers} to barge deeper and deeper into a murder dungeon for a slightly sus Man she just met the night before. I guess maybe they had her be so heroic and selfless to be a contrast to how horrible and cowardly AJ was. Even still I feel like if a real life person was in her position they would have attempted to call the police first. And then after they blew her off she would work up the courage to save him. Yes he had shown that he was sweet and gave no real reason for her to think badly of him besides him being a physically imposing man. But realistically I feel like she should have still been wary of him for a little longer. It would have played into the underlying them of what society views as a monster. I thought Keith's line, "Do I look like a monster to you?", to call out Tess for her prejudice was absolute genius. Because even as he said it had, the audience began to trust him even less! Despite him bringing light to the fact that he hadn't said or done anything accusing besides be a male stranger, we were still suspicious of him. And albeit she did hesitate to go in at first but not because she was weary of him being a murderer but because she was already afraid of what might be down there. The only reason she DID risk her life in the first place is because she went to save him. I don't know just for me personally instead of commending her bravery I was more so judging her for being so stupid walking into what could have so easily been a trap. And I will say that slow burn of her going and deeper down was down masterfully. Her acting was great; I knew what would happen eventually but I still squirming feeling her fear. Then I was thrown off by AJ's arc because even though the exposition of his situation was (slightly important) I was still frustrated that I was pulled from such a high stakes moment to see some douchbags life story. At first I was thinking, oh he must have a part in what's going on down in the house but nooo he's just gonna be another victim. It just frustrated me how he took up so much screen time, while so many questions were still left unanswered. and not in an abstract up for interpretation kind of way; it was like Uhmm that doesn't make sense?? like how Inbreeding shouldn't cause super strength like that?? Or the fact that the only explanation we got for why that disgusting demon had a monster in his basement, was from a random hobo who mysteriously knew what was gong on??? Like even if he knew first hand because he'd been trapped down there himself and escaped, that wouldn't have made sense because she would have followed him and killed him. So how did he know so much?! I also don't know how I felt about the obvious comment about redlining in Detroit... I was born there and my dad was too. His was the only black family on the block at one point and now its almost abandoned. So I felt that adding that comment about the "neighborhood going to shit" bothered me at first. I didn't like how they and played on a serious systematic issue as side dialogue. I told myself they probably did that to add in that him potentially being the only white man in a predominately black neighborhood could be the reason Frank was able to carry on what he was doing in the basement without being suspected. Which would also play on the "What Society Views as The Monster" theme. Which I admit is insightful. But the scene with her driving through the abandoned neighborhood with the intense music made me roll my eyes. It felt too much like a white woman clutching her purse when a black person walks past on the street. Like yes its creepy to find out the suspicious AirBnB you rented is the only hospitable building on the block. But the way they filmed it didn't really make us focus on the juxtaposition. They could have shown how well kept the house was before turning to compare it to the abandoned block. But idk the way she was driving down the street gasping and shaking at the all to familiar blue tarps on collapsed roofs, the graffiti ridden buildings, scorch marks. It rubbed me the wrong way. Overall I enjoyed the theater experience. And even though I was very much let down by the big reveal I thought it was a decent horror film and I think all the actors played their characters VERY WELL. ps Frank should have either been ripped apart by the woman or dragged out of that putrid cellar and thrown into prison for the rest of his life. it very much peeved me that he was able to die on his terms. {spits}

    LOL I mean I know that scene was pretty foul, but why even go to a horror movie if you can't handle fucked up stuff?

    Watched this late last night by myself in dark environment and it was awesome.....freaked me out and I love when a movie can do that. The plot was fairly simple with a small cast but this movie delivered. I agree about the homeless guy seeming too knowing. But what was my little critique is the police interaction. But other than that highly recommend.

    Absolutely loved it and think it is the best horror I ha e seen this year. Super suspenseful super fun, great acting and pacing.

    I agree Chris a lot early reviews overhyped this calling it truly shocking or scary where it was sometimes shocking but more unsettling than scary. I found the movie pretty good and something to watch in a packed theater but not the best horror film (that isn’t part of an ongoing franchise) of the year personally for me. I prefer The Black Phone, Nope, X, and Fresh over Barbarian

    Compared to the other horror movies that have come out this year, I actually thought this one was genuinely terrifying as opposed to the more atmospheric creepy films (like the ones you listed). I've enjoyed all of the horror this year, but this one stood out for me, along with Nope

    The first act of this movie was top tier. Everything after that was garbage. I love Justin Long but the reason for him to be there was a huge stretch. The homeless character in the movie was placed in there for exposition and characters decisions in the 2nd and 3rd acts made no sense. Just because a movie is new and different doesn’t mean it’s great. This movie was just meh IMO
