It's funny watching this in 2020, when people have in fact denounced Ellen Degeneres. Thankfully we've come a long way in realizing toxic positivity is unhealthy, thank you Barbara for enlightening us. You were the leader in this realization and I'm grateful.

Yes, I think as a matter of fact we DO have an empathy deficit in this culture. I'm so glad that she's also touching on how shitty poverty is and how changing attitudes can not change it. Neither will bootstraps BTW, most people in poverty either work more than full time hours, OR are disabled and for that reason simply aren't able to work. Can't is a word and no matter what the positive pushers think there are real disabilities which aren't bad attitudes.

I used to practice the Science of Mind (Ernest Holmes). The Science of Mind is the core teaching of Centers for Spiritual Living; it is a philosophy that integrates spiritual truths with science and physics. Simply put, the Science of Mind teaches the unity of all life. Intentions and ideas flow through a field of consciousness, which actually affect and create the world around us. Although I did believe and "practice" it wasn't working. The pastor would sometimes accuse the congregation of not practicing hard enough. What is wrong with us? I would leave there feeling something was wrong with me and I wasn't good enough. Good grief.

Optimism researcher Martin Seligman, while noticing the important effects of optimistic thinking in avoiding depression, also noted that organizations would fall into delusory, ineffective decision-making without some pessimistic thinkers, and that pessimistic thinkers tended to be more objectively correct in making estimated measurements.

Positive thinking is a coping mechanism....and it comes from the fact that people are feeling more and more helpless and powerless in today's world. I wish that ppl instead of being a pessimist or an optimist they were realists.

I think she is only scratching the surface of this positive thinking and acting. Because many times, sadly, people are not objective. People will base their hiring decisions on whether you are being positive and cheery and all of that. So although I agree that it is a myth to think that you will get better just by thinking positive, I also think that showing a positive attitude socially can benefit. Although it also looks fake sometimes. So, anyway, it is all a bit weird.

Very important! The relentless promotion of "positive thinking" is used to create denial about reality and enable managerial control--"artificial" as opposed to real optimism (Gramcsi: Pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will).

But I also think it's worth to keep an open mind. Maybe everything in the universe can't be explained in a materialist fashion? But I also don't discount that there might be a perfectly plausible reason for the placebo effect. In the meantime we know that being happy and having faith in medicine helps us lot. Acupuncture is another great example of alternative medicine that has very positive and profound effect on it's subjects, but yet can't be explained in materialistic terms.

To Sebastian Barrymore The placebo effect isn't part of the same doctrine. The 'flip side' of not thinking in the right way, in the ideology that Ehrenreich opposes, is that bad things WILL happen ... Thus a direct link is always (note - always) made between the thought and the outcome. Accordingly, EVERYTHING that then comes your way is in some way attributable to you. If A, then you deserved A. If not A, then you didn't deserve A. I hope you can see that there is a much bigger claim going on here.

BADVIBEZ \m/- Sadly, we conflate unpleasant truth with negativity. So, if we deny that something is wrong, that makes it so, rather than measuring things on merit. Women who pretend their spouses don-t beat them, put on makeup and sunglasses and smile. They lie and sometimes make excuses for their husbands. They focus on his "good" points. Doesn't prevent them for getting more beatings or worse case, being murdered if he snaps on them. Guess they somehow "caused" it, despite hoping for the best, refusing to leave - being eternally optimistic about their marriage.

Ah, good, a journalist commenting authoritatively on pseudoscience in science. Now if only there wasn't existing scientific research on issues created by an optimism bias... But first things first, that VAST majority of self help books are just predatory grabs for cash. While there are some good ones out there, the last analysis I caught showed the ratio to be about 1 good book to 20 piles of shit. Though I'd recommend turning away from the first entry, here's a link to the APA's site that lists a few good ones: www.apa.org/monitor/jan08/recommended.aspx Great point on the mood bit, since breast cancer wouldn't cause extreme stress. -__- And, yes, the immune system DOES fight cancer cells. Simply, if your body had no way to identify cancer cells and fight them, every time a cell divided improperly, or what have you, and became cancerous, it would develop into a tumor. Every time. Helper T cells and B cells happen to play a large role in sniffing precancerous cells out and killing them when programed apoptosis doesn't activate in the abnormal cell. It's when a cancer cell too closely mimics a normal cell and/or the immune system is suppressed (which is the effect of excessive stress) that the body neglects it. In short, stick to the opinion's section. Here's a great video on the Optimism Bias: Tali Sharot: The optimism bias

Simopr Dev - Actually, I have won (past exams, lost weight) when I didn't think I would and lost (didnt get a job offer) when I expected to win. On one exam - a civil service gig, I psyched myself into not caring if I passed and scored higher than I had the first time around, going in determined to not make one mistake. I still scored too low, but I left feeling like a winner, but I wasn't, because others scored way higher. Yet, most of them didnt look so positive. I spoke to a few who seemed smarter, but who were very nervous. I'm sure they outscored me.
