I'm only 59 now, so I was probably about 20 years behind the prime years of Barbara Cook's career, but I had a chance to see her perform at a inaugural event for Bill Clinton. She was absolutely stunning. Just took over the stage. I'm so grateful that I was able to witness this incredible lady's talent during her lifetime.

I would have loved to see her do these wonderfully iconic roles. I always wonder how many people have watched THE MUSIC MAN, more than a couple of times, and still don’t realize “Good Night My Someone” and “Seventy-six Trombones” are the same tune.

What a down to earth, likeable person. You never would have known she was a star. She was the real deal.

It shows that she was the real deal and down to earth by the way she engages with the young singers she helps in the master classes for singers she did which are on KZread.

Very few Broadway stars bring their roles to film....Robert Preston couldn’t be replaced.

9:32 pm 5/15/23 Meredith Willson (2 l’s) attended the school that later became Juilliard. Four or five years ago the Juilliard library had a display of an early score that he eventually repurposed for Music Man. I saw it on Broadway with Bert Parks as Harold Hill.

Thanks for posting this. I found out a thing or 2 about this show's rehearsal and early creation phases. I learned a lot from Meredith Willson's memoir "But He Doesn't Know The Territory" but Ms. Cook sheds even more light. Plus I just love her anyway! What a treat!

She should have done the movie The Music Man.In fact she made screen tests nd would have done the movie with stars like Frank Sinatra or Cary Grant.Grant refused th erole saying thaty only Preston could do it and also the composer Meredith Willsomn said that he wouldnt make the movie without him.So Jack Warner had to cast Preston who had made manyh movieds before but wasnt a star.Willson,Preston and the director Morton da Costa wanted Barbara as Marian but Jack Warner wanted a fmaoius movie starf who could sell the movie. So when Preston was cast he decided to put Shirley Jones who had received an Oscar the year before for Elmer Gantry,as a popular movie star and also a soprano. So Cook lost the role that could have given a movie career to her. Now she is goner and we lost maybe the best Broadway soprano.RIP marveleus lady and artist
