Baratza ESP Espresso Shots

In the quest for the best $200 grinder, the Baratza ESP was next on the list. A bonus towards the end is how it compares to the Turin SK40!

I just recieved the SK40 from espresso outlet to pair with my DF64E. I found a much more consistent grind using a hot start and a slow feed. I was very impressed with the minimal retention after grinding 2.5 kilos of beans to start seasoning. Just bellowing and a bit of tapping when grinding the 2 5 kilos. Almost no gringos in the chamber, some at the devlumoer, but not bad at all. No grinds in the chute.

Great comparison video, thanks. I bought Shardor 51 setting grinder. I am new to this, never done espresso before watching your video I was about to buy opus but will wait. It would be great if you could do a comparison between Shardor 51 settings grinder to Baratza ESP. Shardor is half the price of ESP. Thanks

First time using Baratza, there is a 3 g retention. You pulled a long shot with it. ( you could have weighed the beans after grinding).

Is the sk40 sensory more acidity or sweetness? I'm looking for a grinder with a sweetness sensor that allows for a more liqueur espresso! :) tks

I'm deciding between the ESP and the SK40 myself! I'd be interested to see this comparison with the ESP dialed in. It's not quite apples-to-apples to use your first shot ever as your sample

That is not my first shot ever. I used the ESP and OPUS for a solid month. The OPUS I really didn’t like. Kept trying. Not shouldn’t be that hard. I got 3 new grinders last week, out of the box a ton better than that thing. Everything in my $200 grinder review was thoroughly tested. SK40 is fantastic. Very low stock at the moment.

@@portakeeper I'm confused - you said in the vid that this is your first time using the ESP, whereas you'd been using and playing with the Fellow and SK40 quite a bit (0:42, 1:42, 11:42, 12:55). So what I meant was that it's not apples-to-apples if you had the others dialed in but not the ESP. But maybe I'm misunderstanding something. If you did use the ESP for a month and had a chance to dial it in, would you still recommend the SK40 over it for espresso? (No disrespect btw! I appreciate the vid - I'm just trying to understand your experience with and recommendations on those 2 grinders since that's what I've boiled my choice down to 😆 either the SK or ESP)

Any insights regarding SK40 vs Niche Zero? The Niche seems to have become the benchmark conical grinder these past few years, just want to know if the SK40 can compete in terms of cup results at less than half the price.

Closer to 1/3 the price! I have used both. I have always felt like the niche grinder was grossly over priced for what you get. If I still had the niche I’d do a blind taste comparison. Somehow the $200 SK holds its own with ease in my opinion
