John Lewis, the civil rights leader and congressman who died on July 17, wrote this essay shortly before his death: Opinion | John Lewis: Together, You Can Redeem the Soul of Our Nation While my time here has now come to an end, I want you to know that in the last days and hours of my life you inspired me. You filled me with hope about the next chapter of the great American story when you used your power to make a difference in our society. Millions of people motivated simply by human compassion laid down the burdens of division. Around the country and the world you set aside race, class, age, language and nationality to demand respect for human dignity. That is why I had to visit Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington, though I was admitted to the hospital the following day. I just had to see and feel it for myself that, after many years of silent witness, the truth is still marching on. Emmett Till was my George Floyd. He was my Rayshard Brooks, Sandra Bland and Breonna Taylor. He was 14 when he was killed, and I was only 15 years old at the time. I will never ever forget the moment when it became so clear that he could easily have been me. In those days, fear constrained us like an imaginary prison, and troubling thoughts of potential brutality committed for no understandable reason were the bars. Though I was surrounded by two loving parents, plenty of brothers, sisters and cousins, their love could not protect me from the unholy oppression waiting just outside that family circle. Unchecked, unrestrained violence and government-sanctioned terror had the power to turn a simple stroll to the store for some Skittles or an innocent morning jog down a lonesome country road into a nightmare. If we are to survive as one unified nation, we must discover what so readily takes root in our hearts that could rob Mother Emanuel Church in South Carolina of her brightest and best, shoot unwitting concertgoers in Las Vegas and choke to death the hopes and dreams of a gifted violinist like Elijah McClain. Like so many young people today, I was searching for a way out, or some might say a way in, and then I heard the voice of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on an old radio. He was talking about the philosophy and discipline of nonviolence. He said we are all complicit when we tolerate injustice. He said it is not enough to say it will get better by and by. He said each of us has a moral obligation to stand up, speak up and speak out. When you see something that is not right, you must say something. You must do something. Democracy is not a state. It is an act, and each generation must do its part to help build what we called the Beloved Community, a nation and world society at peace with itself. Ordinary people with extraordinary vision can redeem the soul of America by getting in what I call good trouble, necessary trouble. Voting and participating in the democratic process are key. The vote is the most powerful nonviolent change agent you have in a democratic society. You must use it because it is not guaranteed. You can lose it. You must also study and learn the lessons of history because humanity has been involved in this soul-wrenching, existential struggle for a very long time. People on every continent have stood in your shoes, through decades and centuries before you. Make no mistake I am not a Democrat either or Liberal, or Leftist or whatever name tag is popular this week. I, like alot of Americans, have just had enough of the temper tantrums, the lies and total disrespect of the American people from man who currently holds the office of the President of the United States. Obama gave a wonderful eulogy about a strong black man, who stood up for injustice and worked hard for what he believed in. Not one time during the eulogy did he make it about him, he made it about a great man, not a perfect man but a good man. Whether you like Obama or not there is no denying he is a great speaker and speaks from the heart. Something unfortunatly, Trump is incapable of doing.

I’m not a blind sheep that follows the trends I follow facts and facts show what he did made America much stronger in the world. We got Bin Laden and stabilized the region we expanded our alliances to the pacific to mitigate the growth of China we prevented another genocide in Africa. Do your research. You would know that these “illegals” you discussed were brought to this country as children and therefore they have grown up only understanding America and our ideals so they deserve citizenship. And when I say Obama had the least corrupt administration name how many Obama officials were prosecuted in court and name one instance where he used the power of his office for political gain. This makes me so sad.. I remember Obama's victory speach the night he won the election. It was so moving, myself and my whole family were in tears. It was such a beautiful moment that I will never forget being only 19 yrs old at the time. My parents had just lost everything after the great recession. Hearing Obama spoke to me and enabled me to get a higher education and pursue a career I never thought I would have. This man tried so hard to bring us all together. Unfortunately it reflected that we still had a serious race problem in our society. I stand by you as a white man and thank you for inspiring me Mr. Obama. We are all equal and I truly believe you will go down as one of the greatest Presidents of all time. Thank you sir

I was young when President Obama was elected and I saw the ugly racism within my family for the first time. I had never been exposed to racism prior to this (my parents weren't racist), but my grandmother made a horrible, horrible comment about President Obama. I couldn't believe it and it just formed my feelings about her from that point there. I loved how passionate he was and how eloquent he was during the ceremony. I love him, and I'm so glad we got the two terms from him that we did. You're absolutely correct though. His presidency did unfortunately bring to light the horrendous racial divide in the US. And with our current president... Ugh.

I haven't felt at peace and relief in a long time just in this moment of a eulogy that only President Obama could deliver...Thank you!

I cried listening to this. How we miss you Mr. President. Eloquent, sincere, thoughtful and so much more. Thank you for reminding me what we’re fighting for this election. Forever my president.

Obama's eulogy did honor John Robert Lewis. He knew the man quite well. And he called upon all of us to do our part to get out and vote and to forgive our enemies and try to help others. How I wish he were still our president !

Glad that they made his funeral priority over the rest of them peon Americans who aren’t allowed to have funerals. Wake up. Heroes don’t accept things like this. Poor people dying aren’t allowed to go to funerals, but the rich, o the rich can indeed.

OB's mother was a commie and his absentee father (who died drunk driving) was a commie. He was a community organizer from Chicago and we have seen community organizing false narrative movements spring up as never before after the pos came into office.
