Once upon a time, in a small village nestled deep within the mountains, there lived a group of curious and adventurous individuals. These villagers were known for their ingenuity and love for exploration. They had a secret they guarded closely-a mystical device that held the power to communicate across great distances. This magical device was called "BAOFENG," and it possessed the ability to connect people with its remarkable radio waves. However, there was a catch-pronouncing the name correctly was the key to unlocking its full potential. Legend had it that the name "BAOFENG" was derived from an ancient language spoken by the wise elders of a forgotten civilization. The pronunciation of this enigmatic word held the key to harnessing the true power of the device. Those who spoke its name correctly could wield its capabilities with utmost precision. Intrigued by this legend, a young villager named Kai embarked on a quest to uncover the correct pronunciation of "BAOFENG." Equipped with his boundless curiosity and a determined spirit, he sought out the village elders renowned for their wisdom. The elders, understanding the significance of the quest, revealed that the pronunciation of "BAOFENG" was a journey in itself. It required the perfect harmony of tones and syllables. They explained that "BAO" should be pronounced with a strong and emphatic "bah" sound, followed by a gentle transition to an "oh" sound, similar to the word "boat" but softer. As for "FENG," it was a delicate balance of a whispered "f" sound, similar to the word "fine," and a lingering "eng" sound, akin to the "ung" in "sung." It was essential to elongate the "eng" sound, as if serenading the breeze that rustled through the mountains. With this newfound knowledge, Kai diligently practiced the pronunciation, seeking perfection in each syllable. Day and night, he repeated the name, letting it resonate in the valley, bouncing off the rocky cliffs and soaring through the tall pines. After weeks of dedicated practice, Kai felt confident in his mastery of the pronunciation. Gathering the village, he stood atop the highest peak, clutching the mystical device in his hand. With a voice that rang clear and true, he spoke the name aloud: "BAO... FENG!" As the words echoed through the village, a remarkable transformation took place. The device sparked to life, emanating a soft, ethereal glow. The villagers gasped in awe as the radio waves surged forth, connecting them to distant lands and unseen worlds. From that day forward, the villagers cherished the correct pronunciation of "BAOFENG" as a reminder of the power of language, the strength of perseverance, and the significance of shared communication. And so, the legend of "BAOFENG" lived on, passed down through generations, a testament to the harmony that could be achieved by uttering the name with grace and reverence. I know your time is valuable so thank you for taking the time to read my detailed reply .... love your channel

Tip from me: go to O'Reilly auto parts, pick up the Dorman metric o ring kit, take the 12mm ID x 17mm OD x 2.5mm W o ring from the bottom left compartment, roll it onto your power knob. Now your volume knob only moves when you want it to. As a bonus, if you have the baofeng bf-88st, take the o ring one higher in the kit (10mm ID x 14mm OD x 2mm W) and that works on the volume knob of that radio.

  • @Baasicstuff

@@TomRolfson I'm promoting a radio that works just as good on those GMRS frequencies as any single band option. With a little study, one can have it all. GMRS, HAM, Weather, FM radio and emergency. This is not 'Illegal" whats an issues is the manufacture, the importer must comply with certain requirements. Now if you wish to throw an external antenna on this thing and act the fool, that has nothing to do with what this video is about. I know all the technicals ..... I could argue your point also, but these issues are just getting nerdy, this is NOT HAM

  • @TomRolfson

You're telling people that it's legal when it is not. If you're going to give LEGAL ADVICE make sure it's accurate. I know it works, I only own about 8 Baofengs - but technically they are for broadcast use only on HAM frequencies and listening on GMRS "channels". No, the FCC is not going to come swooping down with a black helicopter and bust you. But to be legal as GMRS radios they are to be FCC Part 95 compliant. The dual-bands that you mention these radios certified for does NOT include GMRS Channel frequencies. And finally, if you're going to recommend these at least explain WHY you need to upgrade the antennas. Finally, setting them on a frequency and locking them is not telling them that frequency to be a legitimate GMRS channel has to be between 462.5625 - 462.7250 which only older UV-5Rs will be able to be set without jailbreaking the new ones to reach these frequencies. And what has putting an external antenna on them got to do with "acting the fool"? Did you tell people at some of the GMRS frequencies they're only allowed to transmit at .5 or 2W of power? The antenna is far from acting the fool, any smart user will replace the antenna immediately as the rubber duckies that come with the Baofengs are useless to talk more than very short distances and even less inside of a house or car. Aluminum siding on a house? It's practically a Faraday cage and your greatest distance might be from the 2nd floor to basement. Putting an antenna on your house or vehicle WILL give these radios a much greater range but in a city or uneven terrain, still not much more than the line of sight. You want to harness the power of GMRS you will need to use repeaters. Even farmers with any decent sized property put up their own repeaters because the radios are weak - they COULD reach if they used HAM bands but must still upgrade the antennas. One final point, the ease of which these can be properly programmed to GMRS channels vs "locked" to a frequency is something everyone should learn. You lock to a channel that someone else is using or a repeater channel, the people following your advice might find themselves completely incapable of getting through on the air and without knowing proper courtesy OR legalities of when to use Call Signs as required by law, they could name you as the guy who told them it was legal in a civil suit. Why not recommend they go to KZread and watch NotARubicon videos and stop trying to jamb a lot of misinformation into one short video? Hell, if you want to give people something useful. Let them know the FCC can enter any home in the U.S. without a warrant. Do the research, the law reads that they can enter any dwelling if they believe spurious emissions are coming from that home. Again, you're not going to have a black helicopter or Bearcat come roaring onto your front lawn, but there have been cases where people have been given notice and fined: www.wired.com/2009/05/fcc-raid/ I'm a HAM and GMRS licensed, I use GMRS a LOT. I teach many preppers how to PROPERLY use GMRS and explain that a Baofeng UV-5R is technically not legal, but nobody has been busted for it. No, your radio does not transmit what brand or model it is, however an experienced operator with the right training and equipment can tell when you're on a Baofeng, can measure what power you're transmitting, and very easily locate you. So also warn people what they talk about and know that if it's an emergency situation someone may use it nefariously to hear what supplies you have and locate where you are. Again, GMRS is very useful but it's NOT a replacement for HAM and not capable of what a HAM can do. Using them properly will get you a lot of support from the HAM community including which antennas are best, how to tune an antenna, how to setup a mast or repeater, tips and tricks of how to get the most distance from inside a house or condo where you can't mount an antenna. But again, watch Randy on NotARubicon KZread channel. He will explain the law of using a UV-5R (or perhaps I should say NOT using one if you want to stay legal and not give illegal advice on KZread), he will teach you how to program one, show you why you need multiple channels including to reach other people, emergency services or repeaters that can increase your distance from what might be a few blocks or a mile to 40-50 miles+. GMRS is all that many people need, but you are giving illegal and technical misinformation.

Great question I recommend any of the GMRS freq once you get the licence, which is good for 10 years, no test, and good for the entire family or off road group for example. Then Pick up a TIDRadio Bluetooth programer $20, sometime half price $10. You can easily, load and save your local Repeaters on to your radios. Al 4 of mine are on my local repeater, I can talk with the family when hiking, or in an emergency I have communications in my entire Valley which is a BIG valley population well over a 300,000 I live in the foothills above Los Angeles. I jut did 2 video yesterday showing the results. When not on a repeater these are very powerful walkie talkies good for 1/2 mile in a city or 10 plus miles in a flat area like, the desert or so. You will hear peplle talking but they cant hear you.....why? well theyre using repeaters, repeaters have a key code that you need to program. TIDRadios programer takes care of all this. Hope this helps, I may do a long format video on these if I get enough questions. Thanks for the thumbs up, SHARE

Now the radio snobs snub their nose at anything under $150 bucks but thats just dumb if all you want is good communication. List of frequencies in the comments. most FRS radios are 1 to 2 watts, now if u start making DYI antennas get a Gmrs your dad or mom can get it, it works for the whole family, one licence is good for everyone.
