Totally! It was a different kind of collectable card, but still had the same moment's. In that same class, I would write up trade propositions to propose at recess, lol ("Okay, 15 stars & semistar cards, my mechanical pencil that you like so much, and my dessert at lunch for a week... for your $10 serial-numbered rookie card." 😎😏😆)

Pretty much everything on this list was after or long before my time. Garbage Pail Kids would be traded at school, but that's about it. Of course, flash forward to this past year where stores had to limit or outright stop selling collectible card games because people got into all-out brawls over them!

Yup, graduated 97. Tinkered with Pokemon a bit, but it felt silly after a while and stopped since it was my early adult years when it came out. Barely made it in time for DBZ since the Ocean dub came out late High School.

Grew up in the 60's and 70's.Pretty good time to be a kid. I remember candy cigarettes and bubblegum cigars. The late 70's were a great time to be a teenager/young adult as well. You only had to be 18 to legally drink Beer was cheap and where I lived at most places were of the mindset of "If your'e tall enough to put your money on the bar we'll sell you the beer!!". Then we elected "The Gypper"and he raised the age back to 21 not to mention forcing Cstores to quit displaying and/or selling girlie magazines.

We played marbles, then pogs, after that pokemon cards. We played for keeps with them all. Then I brought these back to my next school: marbles and then pogs ( plastic and metal slammers) where we used slammers in stacks like pogs. Also used pogs. The collector factor back then and being able to play or trade for keeps was what got everyone hooked on them.

Great content as always Ed! There's no ToyBiz figures for me to identify this time so I'll just add in my experiences. I didn't have a Power Wheels but I had a Spider-Man bicycle. Trading cards got banned in my school as all us boys were trading Return of the Jedi cards. When Pogs came out in the 90s I was fresh out of high school so I wasn't collecting them. However I did have a Pog Gun that was motorized and great for shooting discounted/clearanced Pogs at everyone and everything.

Fun story while at the topic. I was attending an all-girls school (middle and high) in the very late 90's and throughout the 00's. While we didn't have bans on toys (so I remember Tamagotchis where banned in elementary school), they had a rule against students bringing their knitting work with them. Like KNITTING was literally banend from my school, because it distracted the students. In the 2000's. I had a classmate who was like "F* this, I gonna call the school out on this stupid rule" and she started crocheting in class. The teachers tried to get her to stop, confiscating her wool and needles. So she went to the headmaster and he said, she was in the rights actually. Because the rules explicitly stated that knitting was forbidden but not related activitiex like crocheting. After that incident they changed the school rules and actually took out that passage about knitting alltogether.

I always thought that the early lawsuits for Magic the Gathering had to do with the fact that the game originally contained gambling in the form of the ante. Each player would ante a card from their deck and the winner of the game would get both cards. This was a problem for wizards of the coast because as it could be legally defined as gambling the places events could be had would have been limited to places you were legally allowed to gamble. I think the last card to mention an ante was released in the homelands expansion in 1995, all cards mentioning an ante were banned from all legal play, and I think the last instance of cards being anted at a sanctioned event was in 2001 or 2002.

I called them POGs and whenever you say the word 'Fab' that is what I think about. And I'd hear that there was a special reason why Yu Gi Oh Cards are Banned not only at school but also at a few homes just because a lot of adults saw it as a some kind of Satanic Ritual in a Disguised in a Children's Card Game due to how the Core Games is played and with one Game Mechanic in particular called a Ritual Summon, and the Win Condition of you taking your Opponent's Life, Life Points that is. In fact I have heard this one story where this guy was caught bring his Yu Gi Oh Cards to school and his Teacher at the time took his Most Expensive Yu Gi Oh Cards Taken away his Blue Eyes White Dragon. And aside from that it is the usual Ty Guns, even the Role Playing ones.

Okay, I've got three thing's to add here: a story, a memory, and an affirmation. 😏 1) In my area, there is a (mostly) second-hand store, that deal's in collectibles, called Vintage Stock. They are well known for hosting, or sponsoring events that are related to their merch. So, card shows, video game tournaments, Pokemon tournaments, etc. etc. In the Summer of 2006, they co-hosted a huge Magic: The Gathering tournament, renting a banquet center to do so. In the second day, of the three day event, I witnessed a 37 year old man lose his mind. This was due to a 14 yr old teen, having a ridiculously strong deck (he would go on to place 3rd, win money, some free pack's, name in the paper, etc), obliterating his prized deck and, as is custom, seizing some of his better (and more expensive) cards. The grown-ass "adult" screamed "BULL$H!T", while flipping the table in a tantrum. This startled many, many people, and made the teen begin to cry, out of fear- with the grown man pointing at him, exclaiming, "No WAY, no F**kin' WAY YOU HAVE THAT!!" He was swiftly tackled by security personnel, and arrested. I recall him having a tatoo of Spider-Man on his calf, and a tatoo of the NY Giants logo on one of his sleeveless biceps. Just goes to show how intense some of those game's could be. Also, a perfect example of someone that was a poor loser. 🙄 2) At least in The Ozarks (a section of the US, that is comprised of part's of 4 States. Named after the Ozark Plateau they are on), POGs were a flash-in-the-pan trend, lasting exactly 1 summer. I did not pay attention to them, as I was in high school and had begun to pay attention to other... um, people 😏 But, one of my younger brother's did. I remember coming back from Summer Camp, and he had hundreds and HUNDREDS of these lil round thing's. But, by the time the weather turned cold, no one cared about them in the slightest. 🤷🏼‍♂️ And, finally, 3) you pronounced manganate correctly. 😎

@@snukastyle as a competitive person, I understand being invested. And as someone that has alway's been a collector/completionist - I understand how much it would suck to, not only lose the game, but some of your cards, as well. (Though, I never played Magic, or any of those style of card-based game. So, this has not happened to me. I liken it to gambling on sports, though- as far as the money loss). Having said alllll of that, it was pretty stunning, especially with the age gap. You just expect more from someone who is supposed to act maturely. As for me, personally, I have always disliked sore losers. Your just making an ass of yourself. Best thing is to keep your cool, learn from the L, and come back stronger.

@@snukastyle another thing- I collected sports cards (NFL, in particular) for a good chunk of my life.
