No actual ancient sources describe a roman salute looking like the nazi salute. The closest any of them get is just saying someone raised their arm or pointed. This form of a “roman salute” originated from a 1784 painting, and was popularized by fascist italy and nazi germany. If someone is trying convince you that that gesture is benign they are almost certainly lying and trying to normalize fascist imagery, or severely misinformed and should be told the truth.
