When mining finished 60 years ago, the companies abandoned their leases and the masses of toxic contamination - leaving Wittenoom Gorge too dangerous to enter.
As a kid, Maitland Parker played in Wittenoom Gorge with his cousins and brothers; Maitland was diagnosed with Mesothelioma in 2016. The Banjima people are concerned for the wellbeing of those surrounding the contaminated areas.
The Banjima people have been asking the government to clean up the area for more than 10 years.

Maitland Parker just passed away in February of 2024. I hope that his people continue to fight for the cleanup of the Wittenoom area. It is important as the tailings and dust from Wittenoom will continue to spread out from the area via weather issues. The government can try to keep people and traffic out of the area. But the environment itself will continue to spread the tailings unless cleaned up.

There needs to be a clean-up. I hope we people can bring awareness to this and make it happen.
