We left very very early from Bangalore. It is the best time to avoid city traffic. #nelamangala is the first of 18 toll plazas that you have to cross on your way to Mumbai (it is 18 if you travel upto Mumbai City) costing nearly 2k in total.
We took the NH48-Tumkur highway and reached at Tumkur ( 63 kms from Blr) by 4am and covered Chitradurga by 7am (137 kms from Tumkur) .NH48 is so good that we could make it in 2hrs 30 mts, via Sira, Hiriyur
Windmills welcome you as you reach Chitradurga. The town is surrounded by mountains on all sides, with windmills on them. A very differently wonderful sight compared to other Karnataka towns.
through Davangere, we continued on NH48 to reach Haveri (131kms from Chitra).
The worst stretch in this highway is from Chitradurga to Haveri.
Roads are in a real bad condition, and work on the 4-laning is progressing slowly (dead in some places!) You end up driving zig-zag all the way
The 30km Dharwad bypass single carriageway (with no lane divider) is hell lot of difficult to cover. Impatience and the need to overtake despite several warning boards not to, are a hazard in an otherwise unbelievable stretch from Bangalore to Belgavi.
The road from Belgaum to Kolhapur is awesome! 4-Laning is complete, and is concretized in many sections! The road was pretty empty, and was twisty-curvy!
The traffic on the road increased as were neared Karad. There was pretty heavy traffic as we crossed Satara. Khambatki Ghat is one interesting section where the down traffic goes through a tunnel, while the UP traffic needs to climb up and down a ghat!
This ghat section of about 8 kilometers is separately tolled! The traffic could be attributed to the fact that the section is shared by the traffic coming from the popular hill station at Mahabaleshwar!
The Mumbai-Pune expressway is a real delight to drive.
This is the shortest, fastest and the best route to travel between Bangalore to Mumbai with no road closure in between. 981 KM done, in 15 hours
It took around one and half tank of fuel to reach Mumbai, ours is a petrol still car good on mileage. Total fuel cost was around Rs./-5,500
But yes, we had freedom to stop anywhere, take pics, enjoy the natural scenery on the way? We really enjoyed this road trip.
