Usually after a while, we learn how to link the patterns seen on the screen to the rhythms heard in the song. It becomes sort of intuitive because we know what the song sounds like and roughly what the pattern expects us to do to emulate that rhythm. That being said, more difficult sections of the song may require practice to turn the pattern into muscle memory. In a way, rhythm games are kind of like an instrument we learn to play, except we don't improvise much since all the expected notes to be hit are predetermined. While it may look difficult, all it takes, like most other skills, is some practice.

Scroll speed does not change the rhythm. I think if you manage to find a good reading speed for yourself then there's no shame in playing experts at whatever scroll speed you like. I personally play at 10.5 cos it's comfortable to read. I know of better players who use 9.0 or lower. At the end of the day it's just preference, so go with what suits you best.

Bandori has something on the lines of "lane forgiveness". When a note is bound for lane 3, for instance, you can tap on lane 2 or lane 4 and it will still count. This also means you can cheese zigzags that are 1 lane apart by holding down in the middle. On songs like melissa, fatima and senbonzakura, when the wiggle comes, you can just hold down in the middle of the wiggle and it will hit everything for you. Also, this is the way we cheese Don't say Lazy EX, which would otherwise be really toxic to play
