In today's episode of Handhelds Round The World, Lady Decade looks back at the Bandai Wonderswan, Bandai Wonder Swan Color & Bandai Wonder Swan Crystal. The Wonderswan was created by Gunpei Yokoi, the father of the Nintendo Gameboy. Let us look back at this system, what it has to offer and how it is remembered today.

Ah, the Wonderswan. It's a shame they didn't think it would take off in America; there's a lot of exclusives it had that looked pretty good. Also, never forget how it never getting released in the states confused the hell out of a lot of Digimon Tamers fans over who exactly Ryo is.

3.5 million isn't too bad for a Japan-only handheld system. People often forget that Nintendo is the only company that has had consistent success in handheld gaming. Sony did very well with the PSP as the best selling non-Nintendo handheld, but that was the outlier. Next to PSP's 85 million sales, the next is a long drop to the PSVita which sold 16 million, then the Game Gear at 10 million.

@@Stevie-J The point I was making is that a lot of people assume the handheld market is very lucrative. That's only been the case for Nintendo. So when people say they want Sony to make another handheld or for Microsoft to enter that market, they don't realize that it probably wouldn't work out well for them.

I remember seeing the WonderSwan in stores. But they weren't readily available, most were sold out already. Knowing its vast library was pretty cool. Just a bummer it did not last long. I remember having to choose between a Wonderswan and Neo Geo Pocket as a kid. Chose a Wonderswan and went on to regret it on one hand as for years only had one Japanese game. But have remained fascinated by it and grown to love it. One of my favourite consoles to collect for. Really enjoyed this look back at it.

Have fond memories of importing my Wonderswan Crystal in the early 00s and playing Front Mission on it, years and years before the DS remaster. Gunpei was spot-on about technology. You don't need your hardware to be anything close to top of the line, you just need creativity and innovation. He's been proven right time and time again. Remember those very popular Tiger LCD games in the late 80's and throughout the 90's? Those things were using what had to be early or mid 70's tech, but it didn't matter. They took off because they were a much cheaper alternative to buying a console game, plus they looked cool. They had nice art on them and were very collectable.

Love the Final Fantasy music at the beginning of the video. Have you heard the rendition on Symphonic Suite? It’s an album of orchestral arrangements from the first three games and I believe it’s the first concert ever put together of Uematsu’s music. There’s an early draft of the Prelude melody on there, totally worth a listen.

I loved the use of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers SNES soundtrack for the background music. (by the way, that game was distributed by Bandai.) I played the heck out of that game when I was a kid and it was one of my favorite SNES games. Took me a while, but I eventually beat it. I couldn't beat it without using passwords, though. lol Anyway, the Bandai WonderSwan is an interesting piece of gaming hardware. I've heard of it before, but I never delved into the history behind it, so thanks for making this video. The shape of the console looks really cool and I like the idea of being able to hold the console horizontally or vertically and play certain games in either landscape mode or portrait mode, with the buttons designed for playing in either orientation. Having a device that can play games in either landscape or portrait mode is commonplace nowadays with smartphones and tablets, but back when the WonderSwan was first released, this was innovative stuff. Gunpei Yokoi was ahead of his time. It's a shame the WonderSwan wasn't released outside of Japan. This would've been something I would've wanted as a kid and probably would've had fun with if I owned one. Why is it that so much cool gaming related stuff made in Japan doesn't get released outside of the country? 🙁

I wonder what else would've Mr. Yokoi brought to the handheld gaming scene, maybe a Switch before the Switch? I mean the wonderswan is as versatile as an smartphone, with the idea of either playing in vertical or landscape mode with buttons that let you play in either orientation, so many different kind of games or even gameplay modes in a same game can take advantage of it, and before smartphone no other portable console was made with the idea of let you play in any screen orientation with buttons (physical or on touchscreen) that can lead to whichever mode is used.
