Bandai Star Wars R2-D2 and R5-D4

Ойын-сауық

A not-so-quick video of the highlights of my R2-D2 and R5-D4 build and then my review of the two finished astromechs. I'm already in love with this line, this set is like a second honeymoon.

    This set was a chore to build. But, they look great in my Black Series display. I kept R5-D4 clean, and have her next to Hoth Leia... because white? I gave R2-D2 a quick dirty black wash to look like the scene on Dagobah. I got this set on sale from Amazon in 2020. Your video was a big help... took me like 16 hours to build both.

    25 dollars for two droids in really good scale, or 75 dollars for an artoo thats way too small? Hmmmmmm... Thanks robo, your review on Grievous sold me on that and on this one too.

    Great video and as a regular model builder I can highly recommend the side cutters from Tamiya, that unlike the ones you use in the vid are actually flat on one side, so the cut will be much nicer than from curved ones. The Tamiya side cutters are also lightsaber sharp, and especially for the clear lens that is a huge advantage as the white distortion you experienced are pressure damage to the clear plastic from being crushed instead of cut, this is a common problem with styrene model kits as clear plastics are more crystaline in structure than coloured styrene. The cables on the feet are likely vinyl of some sort, BanDai are known to use the material a lot on their gundam kits.

    ThePrettytube Excellent info, I dig learning more about this modeling thing, I really appreciate it. I did in fact get a set of Tamiya side cutters and used them on my C-3PO build. They worked great, way better than my Wal-Mart specials.

    Finished these guys yesterday. My 4th Bandai Star Wars kit, and easily the biggest pain in the ass, and longest, build. Worth it, though. I kept R2 clean, and finished with a gloss coat. R5 got dirty, and looks great with the final flat coat.

    Nice video, came in useful for my build. So thanks. R5's eyes really are a pain to get in. I gave up on the last one and cut it and super glued it on. Also had to glue his aerial on after it snapped off after a fall on the floor. Worked out fine in the end. These are great. Eventually.

    Have you seen the new set that has R2 and 3PO together in one kit? The R2 is amazing in that one. The coloration is completely different. The blue is a deeper navy and all the silver bits are actually painted a metallic silver instead of just being cast in grey plastic. The only drawback is that the 3PO has two gold legs instead of one silver. I just finished building them.

    I know we all get excited with new kits, but seriously I find it pays to read the instructions front to back before starting the kit, and look at the parts in accordance, that way you familiarise yourself with things before you make mistakes and go backwards, even if you scan over them lightly, you'll be surprised what you take in and reduce chances of mistakes. great models though, I have these.

    Love this kit how its laid out, gotta love modern injection moulding - the multi color sprue is fantastic...about time someone did this. Here's a hint - if you're not serious modeler and don't paint this, use liquid cement not super glue on smaller parts especially clear - super glue will fog/craze the plastic. Tip for decals on curved surfaces...a drop of dish soap in your decal water bowl breaks water tension and allows easier sliding of decal on plastic. I GOTTA HAVE THIS KIT!

    The arm with the white and gold tip is R2's laser welding arm, the "shocking arm" is basically a tazer and the one he used for the portsbon the death star is called a Computer Interface Arm. And then the tool for the dome other than the periscope is his life form scanner! And I have to get this model kit soon, awesome video!

    Really enjoyed watching this. I haven't worked on a model since I was a kid. I might try this though. I keep debating whether I want to focus on Sideshow Collectibles, which is larger and more expensive, or something like ArtFx and these Bandai models which are still high quality and take up less room and cost less.

  • @TheFwoosh

    @TheFwoosh

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Dizzy_Arsenal As much as I would love some Sideshow and Hot Toys, that toy budget far exceeds my income. I am perfectly happy with the model kits. Smaller, cheaper, and while they aren't the quality of the more expensive 1:6 scale figures, they do just fine. That's just me though. If you can afford the Sideshow and Hot Toys, I say go for it. I will live vicariously through you, haha! And don't worry about building these, I had never done a model kit before and have gotten through them without a hitch. Mostly. But nothing that couldn't be taken back off and fixed.

    If you're going with the decals, they are pretty forgiving. They don't stick down all the way until you press them on, so getting them lined up is pretty easy. The waterslides take a lot of learning to do. If I remember right though I just used the decals on these.

    Great videos so far, looking forward to picking these up. Do yourself a favour though and pick up a couple of Gundam Markers. Black and grey pens you can use to line all the panels. R2 and R5 would greatly benefit from panel lining, probably the Stormtrooper too.

    +kurttkrueger I've never been a fan of panel lining. To me it makes models look a little too animated style. Which is cool for Gundams and other properties based on animation but a little too heavy for movie based figures like these. Nothing wrong with it, just not my thing.

    just got mine in the mail today. half way thru the build on R5 but got R2 built. thinking adding some scuff marks to him to make him look little worn which is something I really wanted the black series to have but alas it didn't. but I agree 100 percent on this guy. he s so close to the movie is incredible. the individual pieces really just make the black series version look like crap. and I think it scales perfect. don't have 3Po yet. been following your reviews for a long time. so wanted to ask which would you think is a better stand in, the model kit 3P0 or the revoltech? both are roughly same price on amazon so was wondering what would be better

  • @TheFwoosh

    +Chris Jouglard I totally prefer the model kit C-3PO. I like the Revo version for what it is, but it doesn't look like the movie, it looks like the old Droids cartoon, plus it's tall. Some would say the model is barely short. But, if you want to wait, there is a S.H. Figuarts version coming that looks just about perfect, if they keep the scale close to their Luke. He's dirty compared the model kit clean and shiny. Plus he comes with an R2 that's already scuffy. I already have the pair in the models but plan on getting the Figuarts, that way I can have one pair clean and one pair dirty. Less work, haha.

    It's kind of funny. The model kits are 1/12th scale, and black series is 6 inch (1/12th) plus 4% of the scale. That means the black series R2 should be 4% taller than the model kit! I wonder how they managed to mess up the scale that badly? I still love the figure, but the size difference is pretty noticable on the display.

    +MW12 For Bandai japanese model kits, these are to some level prepainted (2 get the best finished look, painting/touching it up yourself is usually necessary), and parts are generally made to snap together (they tend to keep their model kits consistent, so both are never truly required, its either one or the other. Glue is generally used for older kits, or to tighten/secure loose parts). Some parts come naturally loose to facilitate gimmicks (such as removable hatches etc.), so theres that little trade off

  • @TheFwoosh

    These scale right up with the SHF human characters. The SHF troopers skew smaller so these are a little big for those. • @TheFwoosh

    @TheFwoosh

    9 жыл бұрын

    Akaash K I want to say the easiest was the Biker Scout himself. Only because I already had a test run with the Stormtrooper and Darth Vader, and the Scout is essentially the same concept. My favorite is a toss-up between C-3PO and R2. C-3PO because he's the first version of him in 6 inch, so it's special. R2 because he is so much better than the Hasbro version. But then there is Vader and the Stormtrooper. Argh. I can't decide, haha.
