I always say, if Floor Jansen is your backup singer, you are a certified badass. Troy is playing what he calls a “low whistle”. He also plays a “tin whistle” in other songs, and of course, what he is best known for, the Uillean pipes. Keep exploring Nightwish!

Troy on the low whistle is an insane musician with so much talent at...well...everything :) His speciality is the uilleann pipes and the ebow but if it makes a noise when blown, strummed or squeezed he can play it. He brings a lot of the unique Nightwish folky sound to the band, oh and he can also sing.

Marko's double neck, The Beast, is a custom Warwick bass with Framus guitar. Both brand names are owned by the same company. The song is about a lonely lighthouse keeper. In the back is multi-instrumentalist Troy Donockley, he is from the UK. He started playing with them in 2007, made permanent in 2013 along with Floor. In addition to everything he plays, he also does vocals, mostly backing harmonies. But, he sang lead on Harvest from the newest album, and his vocal role has expanded since Marko left in 2021 for personal reasons.

Marko was noodling around with the song when he was still playing with Tarot alongside Nightwish, but he didn't think it was suitable for them. Tuomas offered to write lyrics for it, and it became a Nightwish song. Marko studied classical guitar, vocals and musical theory in high school.

“That guy in the back” is Troy…the sixth member of the band, whom I don’t think you’ve seen/heard before this song. He plays…well, if it’s an instrument, he plays it. As you go through more of their songs you’ll see/hear a lot more from him and the multitude of instruments he plays.

Wish granted. I CONCUR! The video is GORGEOUS. As many have said of that - "Nightwish don't sit around campfires, campfires sit around Nightwish." @Bob Cieslinksi Kind of a touching side story... This is indeed Marko's song primarily. When the world was in lockdown, Nightwish did a live stream concert (2 nights) called "An Evening With Nightwish in a Virtual World - Live from the Islander Arms" or something much like that. The name of the concert and the backdrop visuals are all throwbacks to the original video, and a tribute to their dear Marko Hietala, who had just exited the band.

It's the Irish Low whistle, which Troy plays in many songs. One of a dozen instruments he can play. A flute is a transverse instrument which the player blows across rather than into. You'll see Troy playing bouzouki, Uilleann pipes, acoustic guitar, tin whistle and low whistle on Nightwish songs but he plays many more

And is also a punster - In an interview he was asked "Is there anything else you wish to learn to play (if anything)?" Troy:"Ice Hockey!!" 𝓜𝓾𝓼𝓽𝓪 𝓛𝓪𝓪𝓽𝓽𝓪 🐿🤘🇫🇮

Your analysis is so spot on. I’ve been listening to this number for a long time but your pointing out some of the specific parts made me listen to the music in a way that I never heard it before. I love Marko’s voice as well as Floor’s but Nightwish as a whole are just so brilliant. My parents both passed away together a few months ago and I used a song Floor sang called Mama( in Dutch) and a solo number by Marko, “the voice of my father” at the funeral. Both songs gave me peace and I felt that they were perfect for the moment.

I've been enjoying your Nightwish reactions, and appreciate the detailed comments. As I was watching a few this morning, I picked up two 'asks' on your part; one posed in this reaction for what to listen to next, and the other during your Ever Dream reaction, for something on the softer side. My first suggestion is Weak Fantasy, from Tampere in 2015, which is the same show as 'The Islander'. It's a heavy song that shows off everyone, including new drummer Kai Hahto and also how Floor and Marko can blend in heavy harmony and in unison. The second song is Sleeping Sun, live at Masters of Rock in 2015. The way that she and Nightwish can calm a huge metal crowd with a soft song always amazes me. Thanks and have fun with the journey!

On this one, you missed Floor's wonderful smile as Marko walked back to the stage. It just shows how much the band loves one another and appreciates what they do. Troy is playing an alto whistle. There's an actual distinction between whistles and flutes. You blow into a whistle, you blow across a flute. Thus a recorder is technically a soprano whistle, except it's in C instead of Bb. Orchestral whistles typically come in Bb and Eb just like saxophones, clarinets, and most other woodwinds where C melody is the "oddity". That's why Picard's "flute" from TNG is actually a whistle, not a flute. And yes, that's only the alto. You should hear a tenor or bari.

I've been binging your Nightwish and Lovebites reactions and it's refreshing to see a reactor that knows music and can appreciate different types of music. Idk if you've been "warned" about The Warning but they are a young up and coming hard rock power trio from Mexico and to say that they are phenomenal would be an understatement. They are all sisters: Dany(22 years old), Pau (20), and Ale (just turned 18 last month). They don't have a single song that I would consider to be mediocre in their whole catalog which is 3 albums, an EP, and 2 singles that aren't on a project. I highly recommend checking them out and I would start with something from their most recent album, ERROR, which was produced by David Bendeth, either CHOKE, DISCIPLE, or the title track but like I said you can't go wrong with any of their songs. The fanbase for The Warning, like Nightwish, is known as The Warning Army and it's the greatest and most welcoming fanbase in the world, we are all united in our love for the Villarreal sisters! Once again great reaction as always!

It's my understanding that the difference between a flute and a whistle is the direction of the breath, a flute blows across the mouthpiece vs whistle blows directly into.

Marko wrote the tune, but it did not fit his solo group, so he presented it to Tuomas, and Tuomas was inspired to write these lyrics. 2 masters = pure greatness for us to enjoy.

If you like Marko's vocals, perhaps I can interest you in one of his originals performed sans Nightwish? In English, the song is The Voice of My Father, in Finnish it's Isäni ääni. I'll link you to both, because some folks like to review both versions, since it's a relatively short one at just over four and a half minutes. FYI, the videos are the same with the exception the English version is blurred so you can't see he's not singing in English. This was nice. I dont often hear anyone doing a reaction video of the Islander. I like this. But in all honesty, I prefer the other video they made. The one with the older band members sitting in a circle of fire.... Seems to be more in-depth as far as his singing abilities.. Just an opinion. kzread.info/dash/bejne/X2GoqKizZJfgpsY.html
