AnnenMayKantereit (occasionally shortened AMK) is a German rock band founded in Cologne in 2011. Their songs are predominantly performed in German, but the band also occasionally publish cover songs in English. A notable feature of the band's music is the distinctly rough voice[1] of the singer Henning May.
The three founding members, whose joint surnames make up the band name, formed a band while at school at the Schiller-Gymnasium in Sülz in 2011.[2] Initially, these three, Annen, May and Kantereit, performed as street musicians in Cologne. At a jam session, they were joined by double bass player Lars Lötgering.[3] In 2013, they released their first, self-recorded album, which had a release party in Gebäude 9 in Cologne.[4] The album, which was partly recorded on the street, is no longer available.[5] They have their own KZread channel on which they have published their songs.[6] Malte Huck has been the bassist of the band since August 2014 but has since left the group in 2020.[7]
After the release of the music video of their song Wohin du gehst, the band toured Germany. In summer 2014, they played at several big festivals, such as the Appletree Garden Festival, the Open Flair, and the Reeperbahn Festival. In autumn, they played at several concerts as the supporting act for the Beatsteaks[8] and accompanied Clueso on the Stadtrandlichter Tour as a support act.[9] They were finalists in the New Music Award of the ARD-Jugendprogramme.[10]

We always used handkerchiefs for muffling sounds when playing outside, it gives the drum a softer sound. AMK is known for their street playing, they are such an amazing band. Absolutely love them. Henning’s voice is legend.

Please react to some of AnnenMayKantereits original songs! They have a handful of songs sung in English (my favourite being ‘James’ specifically the live version) but the German ones are sooo good too. If you listen to those please look up the lyric translation though because AMK often have very meaningful lyrics

5he handkerchief is there to slightly dull the sound and to prevent the snare from reverberating as much. my dad was a drummer in a band that played in Dallas a lot back from 2011-2016, and he used these things he called "jellies" that did the same thing when he'd play certain songs for his shows. I was his roadie 🤷‍♀️

Henning May is right. I love their cover of the German iconic song Farbfilm. By Nina Hagen who performed very different versions of it over the decades since 1970 something. Annenmaykantereit does it with yet another German band.

I've been thinking for awhile that I'd love to hear your reaction to Teresa Carpio's cover of Vincent. She's been singing it beautifully since 1977, and there's multiple recordings available, but I particularly like the performance on Singer in 2017, when she competed in the same show that reveal Dimash to the world. Keep doing what you do, thank you!

You may want to check out "Hurra die Welt geht unter" from K.I.Z ft. Henning May. The official version is on the K.I.Z channel and an acoustic version is on the AMK channel. The song is in german and also rap.

I Love this and I dig Milky Chance's Clemens Rehbein's music but he really ripped a pigs ear off at 5;43 and his expression a second later just before AMK flows back in was priceless 😆

The handkerchief muffles the tinny sound of the snare. Rounds it out. My brother, a studio musician uses the technique quite a bit.

Handkerchief- I think its to mute the sound so it doesn't echo across the room too. That snare could rattle and overpower the singers

I agree with the handkerchief opinion, if you see some of their other videos, it becomes a kitchen towel, muffling more

You're the band teacher, so there's only one reason for the handkerchief: To make the percussion more earthy and it fits with their interpretation of this song.

8:00 looking at the fact, that the right "guitar" only has 4 strings (you can see it at the head of the guitar) I would say its actually an acoustic bass
