Band of HM Royal Marines and Scots Guards Pipes & Drums, Austin Texas Feb 9, 2016 Concert.

Музыка

British and American Military marching music - performed live 02/09/2016 at the University of Texas Frank Erwin Center. Wonderful brass from the Band of HM Royal Marines, and beautiful selections from the Scots Guards pipes. My dad was a WW2 D-Day Veteran and belonged to the Royal Canadian Legion Massed Pipes and Drums. I grew up with bagpipe music and it's in my Scottish soul. Great concert!

Sadly this was likely the last tour of its kind put on by Columbia Artists. These British military band tours had began to great acclaim back in 1955. It seems appropriate that the Scots Guards Pipes & Drums should be the last as they were the first such tour back then with their regimental band. Can we ever hope to see such tours again? We are so closely connected with our American cousins, and long may it continue. Many of you will know that it was a Scotsman, called Paul Davey Jones, who formed the U.S. Navy in the year 1775 (then called the Continental Navy). In the last century, we went through two World Wars together, fighting side by side, and I can't think of having a better allie than the U.S.A. Of course, not forgetting our Canadian, Australian and New Zealand cousins, all of whom made tremendous sacrifices in winning those wars. We owe a great debt of gratitude to all of those aforementioned nations. I should add that I am a Canadian, but born in Scotland. My father, born in Scotland in 1922, landed during the D Day Normandy landings, on Gold Beach, with the British Commandos, along with the Canadian Army, where they encountered heavy fighting and a great loss of life. That was perhaps the greatest allied invasion ever undertaken, all six beaches, involving all the allied nations. Heroes, every single one of them. For those interested, my father in joining the Commandos in Scotland had to pass a final selection test, of running along the pier in Greenock in full battle kit, and jumping into the deep ice cold water in a fast moving current. Those who could swim back to the shore, were selected, and those who didn't were picked up by row boats.

I watched this combined bands' performance at Long Island University in January 2016. While I was using my iPhone to film the scene, the staff stopped me and informed me no recording allowed during the show. CAMI, Columbia Artists Management Inc., the tour managing company owns the copyrights of this show. Have not heard any British Military Bands scheduled any North American tour in the near future. Now with a new King in the Palace but I think CAMI not in business anymore.

Kenneth Sewell, I am fully aware of the responsibilities of the bands and guards. I was in England several years ago and had the opportunity, through the connections my host had with the military (he was a former RAF pilot and was, at the time, a senior member of the Metropolitan Police, commonly know as Scotland Yard.) to enjoy lunch with a member of one of the Royal Marines Band and a Grenadier Guard, who, at the time, was assigned as a guard at the Tower of London.

To not stand for your national anthem is a slap-in-the face to the thousands of soldiers, sailors, air force members , marines and yes merchant marine as well who gave their lives for your freedom. Those kneeling for the national anthem rather than standing might as be pissing on the graves of all veterans, because they show no respect whatsoever.

Does it occur to you that those kneeling for the anthem are fighting for the same freedoms? Many americans openly carry guns as their right to protect themselves against an opressive government, but you think kneeling is worse? I am a patriot but abhor those who wave flags and condem all those who disagree with them as traitors. Freedom means the freedom to protest.

There’s something deep, almost tribal that I suspect we share (insert nation : US, Canada, Oz, NZ, Dutch, and several others) that could only be topped had the Highland Dancers performed by placing their Claymores over AK47s, taken from the rabble we seem to regularly defeat in the field. No bayonets on the defeated enemy’s weapons, of course; our enemies close to combat behind a screen of women & children. Caber Feidh !

+The Kira699. Collectively the Royal Marine Bands are referred to as the Royal Marines Band Service. Individual bands are referred to by where they are based. As RM Band Scotland or Plymouth or Portsmouth etc. The Portsmouth band is also referred to as the Royal Band as can be distinguished by the Royal Band flash that they wear on their right shoulder. Regarding the Scotland Band it does not necessarily consist of Scots. It is quite possible, though unlikely that the band is comprised of no Scots at all but English Welsh and Northern Irish. They all train at the Royal Marines School of Music and on completion of their training they are deployed to where more band personnel are needed.
