    The real Lieutenant Dike wasn't a coward, and was actually a competent officer, but went into shock after he was hit (by a bullet? or shrapnel? can't remember). BoB just changed up the story a bit for entertainment I guess.

    No, a lot that's been said about lieutenant Dike isn't accurate. Yes, Captain Winters did think Lieutenant Dike was inexperienced and that's why he made him get some front line experience at battles like this. However Lieutenant Dike was wounded in his shoulder which put him into shock, making him unable to lead the men effectively. Lieutenant Dike was awarded a second bronze star for rescuing three Easy company men while under fire in a very exposed position at Bastogne. Band of Brothers tries its best to be accurate as possible and does a good job for the most part, but sometimes it slips up sometimes. For example "Blithe" the soldier who was shot investigating the farm house didn't die like Band of Brother states, in fact he lived till 1967 and served in the Korean war. Lets not immortalise lieutenant Dike as a "Coward" because of a TV show, he was a real person back in WW2, and anyone who served in WW2 demands our respect.

    +John Hancock The sort of the problem with medals. Its hard to give proper recognition where it's due. There are many men who performed actions of even greater courage then what is depicted here but were never properly rewarded. For many, their only reward was death. When uncommon valor is a common virtue, actions that would win high honors on any other battle field tend to not be awarded as such.

    What of the First Sgt drawing sniper fire? These guys were not known for missing.... Being in an infantry unit in their situation meant you would most likely a walking dead man and they knew it. So they did what was needed to get the job done. Do some research on the casualties in an Infantry company in Europe that saw significant combat. The 3rd ID for example suffered almost 26000 casualties through the war and the last of the top 10 suffered over 17000. Remember that the vast majority were from the infantry Regiments actual infantrymen made up only about 2900 of the 20000-22000 man division. While the armor units and the arty were also combat units and suffered casualties they were not like the infantry. In general the support troops had far lower casualties. Now there were survivors, like Audie Murphy and a great many of the dead and wounded were replacements who died before they could learn to survive.

  • @danphariss133

    @danphariss133

    I disagree with the "only one in each division" statement. For example the 3rd Infantry Div was awarded 39 Medals of Honor in WW-II this averages to one every 2 weeks for their time in combat. The 101st members only earned 2 that I know of in WW-II. I have little doubt they deserved more. This was a marvelous display of gallantry but being at risk of being killed was part of the job for an infantryman, if we read the citations for the Medal of Honor you will get a better idea. This is the citation for a man, from the 101st, in VN (where many more than 2 were awarded to the 101st) that took place March 23, 1971 during operation Lam Son 719 (Dewey Canyon II) Michael John Fitzmaurice "For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Sp4c. Fitzmaurice, 3d Platoon, Troop D, distinguished himself at Khe Sanh. Sp4c. Fitzmaurice and 3 fellow soldiers were occupying a bunker when a company of North Vietnamese sappers infiltrated the area. At the onset of the attack Sp4c. Fitzmaurice observed 3 explosive charges which had been thrown into the bunker by the enemy. Realizing the imminent danger to his comrades, and with complete disregard for his personal safety, he hurled 2 of the charges out of the bunker. He then threw his flak vest and himself over the remaining charge. By this courageous act he absorbed the blast and shielded his fellow-soldiers. Although suffering from serious multiple wounds and partial loss of sight, he charged out of the bunker, and engaged the enemy until his rifle was damaged by the blast of an enemy hand grenade. While in search of another weapon, Sp4c. Fitzmaurice encountered and overcame an enemy sapper in hand-to-hand combat. Having obtained another weapon, he returned to his original fighting position and inflicted additional casualties on the attacking enemy. Although seriously wounded, Sp4c. Fitzmaurice refused to be medically evacuated, preferring to remain at his post. Sp4c. Fitzmaurice's extraordinary heroism in action at the risk of his life contributed significantly to the successful defense of the position and resulted in saving the lives of a number of his fellow soldiers. These acts of heroism go above and beyond the call of duty, are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflect great credit on Sp4c. Fitzmaurice and the U.S. Army."

In some cases, like Hacksaw Ridge, the stories are _undersold_ because viewers would think them too incredible to be true. I think it's just Winters' character in general. Guarnere said in his autobiography that Winters didn't swear. I don't think he actually swears once throughout the series. I think the strongest word that he uses is "goddamn."

    Well, as an Army vet, in my humble opinion, that"s a soldiers Officer. One who leads from the front, and only asks of his men what he'd ask of himself. That's a true leader. Not sure how accurate the account of this incident is, but if that LT really did do that, he definitely would've earned an Distinguished Service Medal, or even a medal of honor for taking charge, Hammering the german positions that were embedded in that village then personally risking his life to spread a message to another platoon, AND return to his own men to continue leading them under heavy fire behind enemy lines. Fucking awesome. Many college bred rotc cadets who become LTs know how to sit in air conditioned offices and push paper... not all of em, but alot of em are pansy asses that demand battle hardened CSMs salute em and shit...then they learn the hard way. Nice to see an LT take charge for and with his men. anyway, my rants done lol. Any service member knows exactly what im talking about lol. Hooah.

    My late father, a retired SSM and WW2 veteran told me there is one simple rule for leading men:- Never ask a man to do something you haven't done yourself in the past or are not prepared to do right then. I served for a few years but it was in civilian life that those words came in handy. I project managed £1M+ building services works on construction sites and regularly had 30+ men working for me. I often took off my shirt and mucked in with the lads for heavy work and I think they respected me for it.

    @@forlorndream1400 of course they respected you for it. The military as a whole ( private sector companies included) are extremely classist. Where the common grunt is treated like shit (obviously not the case in every scenario, but in my unit, officers were treated like Godsent angels and were heavily pampered. So we depended heavily on our NCO'S) But there's a rare breed where an officer will come off his high horse and work with his men. And that always instills a sense of comraderie.

    i think they shied away from giving him the medal of honor after the whole incident he had where he had to shoot a drunk sergeant underneath his command. The sergeant jeopardized their entire mission and their men from what i understand, when he didnt obey orders, he was shot by Speirs. Winters talks about this and they say that the US military was well aware of natural killers like Speirs and they took a blind eye to the whole ordeal. They needed killers and leaders. Speirs is amazing

    +necromorphassasin Wikipedia has a section on it, just what I took away from it: The left behind snipers strategy was used by Germany when things began to become desperate and they had to recruit more with less training, so their least trained, youngest, most reckless, and worst snipers were left behind when the Germans retreated from an area. I think that was illustrated from the sniper missing his shot against the solider who ran to draw the fire. The left behind snipers were named "suicide boys" as these snipers stayed behind to fight to the death, at least, this practice usually resulted in death, having no supplies or ammo to replenish, or no where to run. More experienced and valuable snipers were kept alive and did not do this, more could not be created at any reasonable pace. The strategy was effective in disrupting the allies to a degree and stalling their advance towards Germany. A pretty extreme strategy trying to make the most out of individuals with little training. It is really cool that they captured this in the film I have to say!

    When Winters was writing the book, he had to ask Speirs if the rumours where true about him. Him killing the German prisoners, he told winters straight, they was true. Speirs survived because he believed he was already dead, taking away his fears. The fact he did this to, took command. Ran through enemy territory to Rendezvous with the other company then come back. Just insanity.
