Bananas, Synths & Studio FX - An interview with Tom Bugs of BugBrand

Музыка

What a pleasure to meet and chat to Tom Bugs of BugBrand and even more of a pleasure is having the opportunity to film such encounters and share this video with everyone. This felt like a rare opportunity to meet Tom and chat all things BugBrand as there's not much in the way of content out there and getting hold of BugBrand gear traditionally has been difficult with small runs selling out fast. I'm avid lover of my PTDelay (see video below) and I'm very intrigued by the other red box studio tools and the blue panelled synth systems and modules.

Tom's one of the most upstanding designers/manufacturers I've ever dealt with. His modules sound genuinely excellent and he really seems like a 100% quality dude. For small things, he's actually refused payment and asked me to donate money to Doctors Without Frontiers. He's the real deal, and I'll bet his kid will grow up rad, too. Thanks for this, @divkidvideo!

Tom is amazing! I tend to approach modular synthesis from a different perspective when I play my bugbrand system! can't wait for him to continue building new and inspiring instruments! Thanks for the Interview DivKid! :)

Glad I stumbled on this interview. It's been over 10 years since I acquired a BugBrand rack. In all my emails with Tom he's been super nice. I am really impressed with the way his packaging engineering has developed. Choosing his own standards has let his designs become refined. If Tom's lull period with making the blue modules hadn't coincided with my growing interest in Eurorack, I'd no doubt have investing thousands into more BugBrand. I will check it out again.

HI Richard, I'd love a BugBrand system. For now I just have the PTDelay red box which is one of my favourite delays. The filters in that are gorgeous as is his dialling in of the circuit around the PT chip which doesn't always sound like this in other PT delay designs (pedals/modules etc). I hope we have Tom back designing and releasing things soon.

I must have been one of those CHOSEN ONES that happily, by pure CHANCE just happened upon Bug Brand in the VERY early years... I honestly STILL believe that Tom will re-find his TRUE artistic-electronic self: I was COMPLETELY bowled over by his quirky "salad-bowl" electronica back then : MAN! what KNOBS !!! #respect . . . I have often wondered if the "market" didn't (unfairly) overtake tom with his tactile gear. more so to my own sorrow! (imho) I see Tom as being PRE-KorgKaosPad !! I confess to having WISHED he might have taken us further in that direction... MAYBE he might feel inspired ;) STILL Tom remains a HUGE personal inspiration to me as stand-alone designer aka architect ;) BRAVO tom

I wish I'd have found Tom and his work early on I was only very vaguely aware of it when I got into Eurorack but it's been a pleasure to look into further and get to meet Tom since then.

I wish over in this here ‘New World’, the people could and would take a lesson from countries all abroad, Sweden and places where they seem to know how to take care and mind their neighbor’s well being. We should follow their leads, and instill into our society a sense not only of training / development of skills and proficiencies, but of just ‘neighborly love’ - just caring for ourselves as a society at large. Instead of sending would be inventors and innovators to law school, to go waste money and swindle our own families, shouldn’t we maybe try something a little more like team work, and new ways to think and experiment with the new?! It’s serving other countries some good, so why don’t we take a lesson? Thanks for uploading this whole interview, it’s great bits of discussion, very inspiring!

Thanks for this rare glimpse into the Bugbrand brand and the man behind it. I tried for years to get a Weevil and then the modular stuff but it always sold out, quickly. Never even seen a Bugbrand module or Red box in person. Your products Tom are rare as hens teeth over here across the pond.
