Banana Fiber to Fabric, Fiber Extraction, Yarn Spinning & Weaving Process
Banana Fiber to Fabric, Fiber Extraction, Yarn Spinning & Weaving Process (Innovative Textile)
What is Banana Fiber?
Banana plant or plantain plant not only gives the delicious fruit but it also provides textile fiber, the banana fiber. Banana fiber is natural fiber.
AKijōka-bashōfu (喜如嘉の芭蕉布) is the Japanese craft of making cloth from the bashō or Japanese fibre banana as practiced in Kijōka in Ogimi, Okinawa. Like linen, hemp, ramie and other long vegetable fibres, it does not stick to the skin in hot weather; as such it is suitable for the climate of Okinawa. Kijōka-bashōfu is recognized as one of the Important Intangible Cultural Properties of Japan.
Bashōfu formed part of the tribute to Ming dynasty China, while 3,000 rolls were listed as due after the Satsuma invasion of Okinawa in 1609. As well as the payment of bolts of plain, striped and kasuri bashōfu as tribute to the Ryukyu Kingdom kings, the cloth was used in daily wear by commoners. Production increased in the Meiji period with the introduction of the takahata (高機) loom. After the Battle of Okinawa, production declined dramatically.Formerly made across the Ryūkyū islands, bashōfu production is now localized to Kijōka.
Characteristics of Banana Fibers:
Banana fiber has its own physical and chemical characteristics and many other properties that make it a fine quality fiber.
Appearance of banana fiber is similar to that of bamboo fiber and ramie fiber, but its fineness and spinnability is better than the two.
The chemical composition of banana fiber is cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin.
It is highly strong fiber.
It has smaller elongation.
It has somewhat shiny appearance depending upon the extraction & spinning process.
It is light weight.
It has strong moisture absorption quality. It absorbs as well as releases moisture very fast.
It is bio- degradable and has no negative effect on environment and thus can be categorized as eco-friendly fiber.
Its average fineness is 2400Nm.
It can be spun through almost all the methods of spinning including ring spinning, open-end spinning, bast fiber spinning, and semi-worsted spinning among others.
Properties of Banana Fibers:
Tenacity: 29.98 g/denier
Fineness: 17.15
Moisture Regain: 13.00%
Elongation: 6.54
Alco-ben Extractives: 1.70%
Total Cellulose: 81.80%
Alpha Cellulose: 61.50%
Residual Gum: 41.90%
Lignin:15.00%

In Assam, people cut the stem of banana tree, keep in sunlight to get it dry then set fire on it.the ash is kept in a bowl with water. and radish water drops through the bowls bottom tiny holes into another bowl and this filtered brown water is used as house made soda to add in different types of curries including fish curry.this extract is called "khaar".khaar is alternative of oilly food.it helps to cook food easily.it can't be used to cook some vegetables.plz leave comment if the same product is used in other place also.
