Cheers Tone, I'm just about to plant out 38 Oldhamii hedge @ 2-meter centres. What I'm going to try is planting 1 or 2 Vetiver Grass clumps in between to bring up nutrients and moisture to feed the bamboo. If you don't know what Vetiver Grass is, it is a type of clumping grass that digs straight down with its roots to 4 or 5 meters. The theory is that the Vetiver Grass will help break through my black clay soil, provide some quick hedging [it grow to about 2 meters tall] for the first few years while the bamboo is growing. Once the bamboo grows and shades out the Vetiver Grass, the Vetiver Grass should die off, as it can't stand being in the shade.

@@alexk6745 They have been in for 11 months now, and they are a little thicker and around the same height as Tones's Oldhamii at 12 months. I'm on black cracking clay soil with frosts down to -3C, east of Warwick Qld Aust. So far I have been very impressed with the growth rate

Just over 2 years in the ground for me, canes are around 3 meters now [first year around 1.5 meters].

Fuggin' awesome!! .... As those leaves build up they will provide great mulch for elsewhere as well as stock food. Also, those shoots are worth about $10kg when they get a bit bigger and are in high demand with asian grocers..... great vid tyvm

3 years yeah that’s the way army

Nice video. I got 4 meters out of some of my oldhamii in just one year in S.A. The plantings were very small, and a similar size to yours. I had them sent over from QLD. I wish i had the room you got though. My sleeper beds are only 700mm wide, and i fear it wont be long before the bamboo busts them open. Anyway, i should be thankfull they are growing.

May I ask where in QLD you got them from? I am SA as well. Have Slender Weavers, they have been a bit slow, Alphonse Karr are doing ok and China Gold, not performing really well at all and I have removed a few and put Alphonse Karr in their place. The others I have are Nepalese Blue, very slow growth and also Himalayan Weeping which is doing ok. I was expecting much more rapid growth from bamboo though, they are all well watered, fertilised and mulched but some are disappointing.

@@rayf9194 I got them from bamboo land. The oldhamii were 18.50 each and still are that price. Same with Alphonse Karr. My Alphonse Karr were on special for only 10 dollars, but they came with sooty mould around the nodes where the branches emerge. ( Alphose Karr is known to be susceptible to sooty mould in the tropics) But luckily the new culms showed no sign's of the mould and now it does not exist. Off the top of my head, delivery was 80 dollars whether i bought 100 dollars worth or 500 dollars worth. You have to tell them what you want, and they will get back to you via email with a quote. I manged to get 20 plants sent for 80 dollars because they were only 3 litre bags.

Hi Carrolle We generally get a reasonable amount of rain in the hotter months due to afternoon storms. Not much in the colder months. I have installed a soaking system that runs along the whole run of the bamboo. When it gets pretty dry I connect up the hose to the soaking system and run it for an hour. Glad you enjoyed the video. 👍

How is the bamboo growing now?

Hi is this a Clamp or running bamboo variety? Is it cold hardy?

They were all planted about 60 to 70cm deep into the ground. I also put some compost fertiliser in each hole before planting. Cheers.

We do have a few snakes here from time to time. Thankfully we don't see too many of them. Doesn't seem to be more snakes since the bamboo were planted. We definitely have seen less snakes since we got rid of our chickens though, which was about a year ago.

great video! I've got nine currently growing (in the ground for two years, similarly minimal growth), also in Australia (rural Victoria). Do they usually take a few years to show growth? I got worried when I read some people in America getting 10+ meters in the same time frame.

Hi Jordan, Yeah, these took a while to get going, but once established they just need water and Summer humidity. I'm hoping for some really good growth this Summer. Good luck with your bamboo!

I've got about 40 I put in last February (so about 10-11 months in the ground) and they're as big as his 3 year growth with much much more foliage. I built the bed up with mushroom compost and planted into it and buried some soaker hoses into the soil. Through the dry period (basically the last 12 months have been solid drought) I've put them on every other day for an hour. Also fertilized every 2-3 weeks with a high nitrogen granular lawn fertilizer. I'm south east Queensland roughly 2.5 hours west of Brisbane.

No underground barrier. About a foot or so below the top sandy soil we have is clay. They are supposed the be clumping bamboo that don't spread everywhere in your yard. So far, so good with this.

How do you make the bamboo grow shorter?

Cut it at the height you want it and it won’t grow any taller only bushes.

Also, the less water they get, the shorter they stay. Enough water to keep them alive, but not enough to make them grow tall.
