possibly the first example of adaptive music? wikipedia says frogger, which came out a year later, heh. suzanne cianni is the sound designer. she was a synthesizer pioneer, specializing in buchla designed synthesizers, which were built for experimentation and sound design rather than noodling over prog-rock. such a cool game. thanks for getting so in-depth!

That is one of the coolest playfields I've seen. So much colour and light. The sound/ voice is good for 1980, but definitely would have been on the more risque side of the line.

@@EsotericArctos Agree, i was just thinking that after hearing it then saw this post. The background music is interrupted it seems like EVERY time ANYTHING is hit or rolled over, even the bumpers and side kickers! Then it takes a full second or more for the background music to come back on.

I suspect the machine you played on had setting where you didn't lose your Xs' when you dropped either. So many machines had a default setting that made it more user friendly. In all honesty, the game is more fun and rewarding when the settings are set to be more challenging. ^_^

The very first time I saw this game was at a bowling alley called Stardust Bowl. I was with my brother and his dad. I think I've played that game. I've played some pinball as a kid in the early 80's. Here's a funny story that happened at the bowling alley one time. My brother once pulled the plug on a Dragon's Lair game. It wasn't a pinball machine but a video game. It was a different type a video game though. My brother's younger than me. I had no clue why he unplugged that game.

I can't help but wonder about Xenon's "story", if it even has one, considering all the characters on the board. My guess is that Xenon isn't a person, but maybe some kind of process that turns the two people into those cyborg aliens. The image on the upper left of the board appears to be them mid-transformation. The dude looks like he's screaming in pain further up on the left.

Hmmmm...is that playfield original or is this a repro? The numbers on the tube shot ring look like a different font. If it is original it looks pretty good and the colors are still very nice. I was very fortunate that someone put the mylar down early on my table.

It's an overlay. We bought this game off a gentleman who had already installed the overlay, and in my opinion he didn't do a great job with it, a lot of the inserts don't line up right. I'm not a perfectionist or anything but it was wayyyy off if you look close. We did one a few years ago with an overlay and while the things never line up perfect you can get it pretty close. They play great like that, and to be honest you probably don't even need to wax it! Yes, the fonts are all kind of off a bit but it's better than how worn these things usually get. Nothing like a Mylar original like yours though, that's cool they saved it!

Lol. I guess I wouldn't have even noticed if I didn't play mine too much. ^_^ Still cool that it looks as vibrant as it does though. The first Xenon I played was at Funspot in NH. Theirs is really worn out where you can't even see her face on the playfield. ~_~ I remember when I went to pick mine up I was like...oh...that's what was supposed to be there.

I had this machine. It burned inside due to a burned up solenoid. I put the cabinet on the curb for trash day. I went back to get the back box to put on the curb and the cabinet - burned as it was - was already gone. I still have the back box glass. Boo.
