I really hope theyre encouraging her to eat well. When I was a little girl, I was scrawny, scrawny, scrawny. With the intensity of ballet expectations, I hope theyre not starting the eating disorders so early 😭 you can see her ribs already and I really hope theyre not convincing her that she needs to stay that thin. (I know that kids often look very skinny as they grow, just saying that ballet is a dangerous sport for body dismorphia)

I looked like her when I was her age, and it was the comments from people telling me I ate like a bird and constantly picking on me that led to me forcing myself to eat more, destroying my ability to tell when I was hungry, and developing a binge eating disorder. Just don't comment on people's size, please, especially children

I understand as someone that trained in various dances myself. I can only speak for my own situation few family members of mine are pro anorexic and would often get defensive if anyone was concerned about my weight "sure im naturally skinny as well there's nothing wrong with her". if I gained any healthy weight, I'd get awful doing by few people.

Ugh this topic is soooo challenging, because YES we need to fuel our bodies, when I was a ballet dancer I got a lot of messaging that was “ballet isn’t a sport” combined with “suck in your tummy” language that led me down a path of severe problems with ED. BUT I know so many girls I used to dance with who were told they were too skinny and THAT gave them an ED…. It really feels like you can’t win sometimes

It’s mind boggling how these dancers are able to contort their bodies, even so young. I almost wonder if it’s probably not so great for a young developing body to be subject to the physical rigors of professional dance. The problem is, like any skill, if you have any hope of getting to the highest levels you have to start training very young and consistently. It’s the same with pianists, except it’s not nearly so demanding on our bodies. Mind you, that does NOT mean you can’t really screw up a young talented kid with endless hours of forced practice, pressure to perform and compete, etc. I’ve seen it more than once. Hope she’s in it with all her heart, and doesn’t have some overbearing parent who’s trying to live vicariously through her. Unless you’ve been exposed to the world of child performance and competition you really cannot imagine how psychologically debilitating it can be.

It’s mind boggling how these dancers are able to contort their bodies, even so young. I almost wonder if it’s probably not so great for a young developing body to be subject to the physical rigors of professional dance. The problem is, like any skill, if you have any hope of getting to the highest levels you have to start training very young and consistently. It’s the same with pianists, except it’s not nearly so demanding on our bodies. Mind you, that does NOT mean you can’t really screw up a young talented kid with endless hours of forced practice, pressure to perform and compete, etc. I’ve seen it more than once. Hope she’s in it with all her heart, and doesn’t have some overbearing parent who’s trying to live vicariously through her. Unless you’ve been exposed to the world of child performance and competition you really cannot imagine how psychologically debilitating it can be.
