As a Germany fan I was furious when this happened because going into that tournament, Ballack was arguably one of, if not THE most influential player of that team. However it turned out to be a blessing in disguise as it opened the opportunity for Khedira and Ozil to make a name for themselves. They both capitalized on that opportunity and became indispensable for the team. They were undisputed starters for years after that. They helped Germany become a consistent top 2 or 3 national team in the world which culminated in them winning the world cup 4 years later.

Ballack should have been sent off for that slap. I know it seems soft, but I have seen players sent off for a lot less than that, and in any situation, not just in a football match, a slap is offensive and an intrusion of a person's space.

Not only international career, it literally ended his football career. After this tackle, he missed the world cup 2010, Chelsea didn't renew his contract and ended his career with 2 mediocre seasons with Leverkusen. Good bye Ballack.

Serves Ballack right for the CommunityShield that season. Refereed by the same man Chris Foy who stopped a promising ManUtd attack for no reason when Ballack faked injury when United were already in front looking to add to that. Only for Chelski to make it 1-1 and then in front of Chris Foy he elbows Evra in an off the ball incident which shouldve seen a red card in any game let alone a "fair play" charity game. But no red card or ANYTHING was given and Chelsea were allowed to unsportingly play on and score about 20 seconds later on a part of the pitch where Evra would've been there to defend it had he not got elbowed. To make matters even pisstakingly worse, because Chelski still couldnt win in 90minutes with a completely biased ref in their favour and it wemt to a shootout, Ballack took and scored 1 of Chelsea's penalties and they "won". This still remains Chelski's only Shield "win" since 2005.

Habe ich irgendwo gesagt, dass Ballack generell schlecht war für die NM? Nein. In diesen Jahren hat sich die deutsche Nationalmannschaft aber extrem verändert und Ballack wurde auch nicht jünger. 2010 spielte die deutsche Mannschaft sehr attraktiven, schnellen und modernen Offensivfußball, was mit Ballack nicht möglich gewesen wäre, da er einen komplett anderen Fußball verkörpert. Ballack hat sich mehr als verdient gemacht, aber irgendwann müssen auch die Größten gehen, was hier passend geschah.

I agree with ***** , a lot of us wouldn't let someone slap us without taking revenge... Maybe the revenge is too big but Boateng isn't totally wrong... And the karma hurted him later in that match, he missed a penalty. So case closed there's no injustice.

Dude he missed a P.K, Ballack missed the entire world cup, how is that no injustice. Lol there was some positive though, it allowed Germany to transition from the old days of long shots and headers to a younger more free-flowing side, and I doubt Ballack would have adapted as well as Schweini did, it's not just his game style. But it is extremely idiotic, that the tackle more or less ended an amazing career

Amazing how that little slap by Ballack, which wasn't much, led to the foul by Boateng, which also wasn't that big a deal, as he only got a yellow, had such huge consequences. Ballack missing the 2010 WC totally changed the course of German football, as it ushered in the era of the Young Turks with Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira as the creative forces in the midfield. Before that, the German team had Ballack's character, mechanical, robotic, built like a machine. Even though Ballack himself is of Sorbian origin, he fit the German image of itself, so there were huge swaths of German fans who, to this day, despite their phenomenal success, hate the "bastard" Turks the way some Italians hate Balitelli. Ballack himself saw into the future and went to South Africa parading himself as the German "captain", even though Joachim Low had already made Phillip Lahm the captain. Lahm was forced to publicly say he was not just the WC Captain, but the team captain. Ballack then called Low a hypocrite for not coming out and saying he no longer wanted Ballack on the national team. Low tried to soften the landing by offering Ballack two friendlies to get to 100 caps, but Ballack told him to go screw himself. None of this would have happened had Ballack not slapped Boateng and he not been injured. Ballack was that big a personality on the German team.
