Ball Python Enclosure Upgrade: It's controversial!

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

I'm upgrading an enclosure for one of my ball pythons! We'll discuss why It's CONTROVERSIAL (!!!) and how-why-when to upgrade your snake's digs.
Does your snake keep eating everything you offer and now it's just too big for the lovely enclosure you have it in? No big deal! Here's all the info on upgrading. PLUS see the cutest snake-yawn! Also, watch my brother/cameraman Kent complain about stuff!

    I liked your comment about not having smoke around snakes. It damages their eyes! Also really important note that not a lot of people think about is this includes vape smoke! If you have a mod and vape indoors make sure you are not doing it around your snakes enclosure or anywhere near them. They can actually go blind from it.

    Snakes have a protective scale over their eyes (called a spectacle) so a snakes eyes are never exposed to the air, but snakes do have a very simple respiratory system and smoke of any kind is very damaging for them to breathe.

    @@GreenRoomPythons How exciting! I am hoping that I will be able to invite a new snake friend into my life very soon. It depends solely on which way this C-19 thing zigs or zags and who I'll be working for. I'll be working from home for certain, but I don't know when or for how much just yet. I'm pricing out the cost of everything so I'll know what I'm looking at. I am inclined to build a snake palace and want something that looks similar to one of your set-up's, but I know I will also need a tub, or smaller alternative palace for the new individual for when I'm cleaning the substrate and all. As with dogs, children, people, et al, I won't bring someone into my home unless the living sitch is optimal. I'm still on unemployment, so unless I sell a bunch of new artwork, there's nothing coming in right now. I may have to wait until later on in the year for Mr or Ms Snake to come home. Keep your fingers crossed for me! Feather in your cap, BTW! I knew zero details about "substrate" and whatnot until I began watching YOUR videos! Well done, my friend! :)

    So I’m planning on bringing home 2 ball pythons. Getting male and female just in case I’d like to try breeding some day down the line. I have 2, 4x2x2 PVC’s from animal plastics. But I also have a bunch of RUB’s. Should I start them on rubs and move up as they get bigger until they’re adults and then move them into the pvc’s? Or should I start them in the pvc’s and just put a ton of clutter inside them. Which would you do? Thanks man!

  • @GreenRoomPythons

    @GreenRoomPythons

    3 жыл бұрын

    Nice! Congrats on the new snakes. Thats going to be really fun. If these are babies, I would start them out in the RUBs because they'll feel much more secure in the smaller space. Once they're a little bigger and you get a sense of their personalities, you can decide if they'll do okay in the AP enclosures. Sounds like you have awesome housing for them either way though!

    I drilled once 180 holes into a tub. Had to drill twice, first with a 2-3 mm drill followed by 5 mm. So I drilled 360 times into the tub. But that was not all! I did this with 8 tubs which was drilling 2,880 times. I am almost sure my neighbours were so happy 🙂 It is hard to buy really useful boxes in Europe. Most of the big tubs being sold from different vendors are too high to be used in a DIY snake rack. But the Swedish furniture company IKEA sells 55 l boxes (14.53 gallon) with lids that can be used well for adult ball pythons (SAMLA model). The underside is not smooth but very stable. The dimensions are: 79 cm x 57 cm x 18 cm (31" x 22.5" x 7") I was able to fit 8 of these boxes in a wardrobe without doors (also from IKEA). So I saved myself the sawing, measuring and screwing when building a rack. A bought a professional aluminium, modular snake rack with V70 tub about 2 years later. But the DIY rack was a very good start, I could buy more boxes, shelves and heating mats as I needed them. But it is really huge compared to my new rack which has room for 10 adult ball pythons.

    Could you possibly do a video on different heat sources. I currently am running an UTH pad and a heat lamp. I have kept the temp perfect at 88-90 on hot side and 77-79 on cool side. I have a bit of difficulty with humidity as I currently have a glass enclosure and I have covered the screen top about 75%. I have to mist frequently and upgraded to coco chips to attempt to hold moisture. I have been researching different heat sources to possibly get rid of the lamp as my heated side frequently drops to 40% or below humidity even with frequent misting. My cool side usually stays 50-80%. I plan to upgrade to pvc enclosure as well in the future.

  • @GreenRoomPythons

    @GreenRoomPythons

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thats a great idea for a full video, but for your specific scenario: I'd cover the other 25% of the top and replace your lamp with a CHE or deep heat projector. With that setup, you should be able to control your humidity just by mixing water into the coco chips, with no need to mist. Good luck with it!

    For everyone who needs it- The easiest way to cover a screen top is to buy a few plastic placemats from the dollar tree. They are easy to cut to size. It is even easy to cut a big round hole to put around the headlamp, which is what I have done. And it has never burnt the plastic at all, because I cut it around the dome.

    Hi Bob, I'm so glad you posted this video. My 4 month old ball python was doing the same thing as Lydia, where he was always exploring during his waking hours (and in his hides when sleeping or resting), and whenever I opened the tub, he'd crawl onto my arm. I upgraded his tub to a larger enclosure, and now he spends all his time in his hides and rarely comes out. I'm not sure if that means he's more content (they say a hiding ball python is a happy ball python) or if he's intimidated by the space, or if it's just because he happens to be shedding now just after I moved him. He did take a meal in the new enclosure just fine. I realize this is an older video, but if you happen to see this and have any thoughts, I'd appreciate it. :)

  • @GreenRoomPythons

    Hey Bob, As always, great Video. I love your ability to make learning fun. I don’t know if you will see this comment since this is an older video and you might not check the comments in your less recent videos as much but I have a question. You mentioned that it is not a good idea to burn incense or light candles in rooms in which your snakes are. I rent a room in a house that was build in the 1890s (I am a university student living in the Netherlands), in which there is a lot of airflow since the walls of the house are not thick and the windows let a lot of air and wind through. I have my candles lit for maybe 3-4 hours a week. I never worried before about my candles being harmful to my snake. I don’t want to do anything that is bad for my little guy. Also, it would be great if you could include also giving measurements in centimetres, some of your audience, including me, might not know exactly what size something is in feet. Thank you:)

  • @GreenRoomPythons

    @GreenRoomPythons

    Жыл бұрын

    Yeah I always have to Google the conversion whenever I hear somebody talking in centimeters. I just don't know those conversions off the top of my head... Some people burn candles around their snakes and I think that long-term it could cause some health problems. I don't burn anything in the same room as my snakes. My guess is that if you're just burning a candle once in a while it's probably not going to affect them too much though. They just have very sensitive respiratory systems and any kind of smoke is bad for them to breathe

    If she's small for a 10 gallon she's probably a hatchling but it's impossible to tell how old a snake is with any accuracy because they grow a different rates - it depends on genetics and how much or how little they've eaten in their past.

    I am preparing to get a ball python I have a 4'2'2 pvc enclosure with a front opening glass sliding door, and am setting it up with quite a bit of space taken up with pothos, snake plant, and a few other small plants, wood and other clutter. I have multiple good hides and I have an arcadia uvb setup with a timer, heated with a heating pad on the bottom and a ceramic bulb above to regular the ambient temp both with individual thermostats and probes set up. I am just wondering before I finish the enclosure and contact a breeder what age ball python would be ok in this size enclosure, I was originally planning on getting a 6+ month old male but I just need an opinion from someone with experience first, I know that you can keep them in smaller tubs/terrariums just fine but would a juvenile python have problems in a larger environment despite good conditions, sufficient clutter/hides, and having a lot up the space utilized and taken up by sticks and plants. If you or anyone in the comments has any advice to give that would be great, it has been hard to find information on whether it's ok to house them in a larger enclosure or not because normally people keep them in tubs as juveniles and upgrade later as they have grown more. what age do you think would be best?

  • @GreenRoomPythons

    @GreenRoomPythons

    It's definitely okay to house them in a larger enclosure but every snake is an individual. My recommendation is to get a baby and see how they do. If they don't do well in that large enclosure you may have to move them to a small tub for a period of time, but they'll eventually be able to go into the larger enclosure. The problem with getting a 6-month-old from a breeder is you may end up with a snake who's lived the first 6 months of their life in a small tub and it might make it more difficult for them to adjust to the larger bioactive enclosure. Either way, it's going to depend on the individual snake so it's a bit of a roll of the dice.

Is there an age that you think could be a happy medium between old enough to bring home from a breeder but young enough to not be too accustomed to it's smaller enclosure, I understand regardless I may have to downsize and use a tub setup for a while until he grows but what age do you feel would be least shocked by the transition?

  • @GreenRoomPythons

    @GreenRoomPythons

    3 ай бұрын

    Respiratory infections are either bacterial or viral. Those are the two causes. When conditions aren't ideal, that could cause the snake to be more susceptible to a virus or bacteria infection. If the humidity in your enclosure is too high combined with a dirty enclosure - that combo breeds bacteria, which causes respiratory infections.

    So I found it interesting that you made sure to say we shouldn’t burn candles or use incense with a reptile, but are you not concerned about the plastic off-gassing when you heat it up? Seems like it would. Isn’t that bad for the snake too?

    It doesn’t have to melt. Even leaving plastic in a hot car can increase the chemicals leaching out of them which is why they say you shouldn’t store bottled water in your car. It may not be an issue with this particular kind of plastic, I’m not sure how to even find that out, but it just made me think when you mentioned the incense and candles.

    So I'm curious, just got my python Sunday, I bought a 20 gallon long for him, he's about a year old and about 2 feet long, I have it set up bioactive with a lot of stuff in there kinda, 3 real plants, 3 fake plants, 2 hide mounds and a water bowl big enough for him to soak in, is that gonna be too big? He seems to spend most of his time in his hides, I've seen him in both his cool hide and his hot hide, so hopefully he's happy and adjusting well, I'm going to be feeding him for the first time with me this weekend, so we'll see how that goes, the breeder said he's a good eater and never turned down a meal, so I'm hopeful, I also posted pictures of my enclosure on Instagram and tagged you if you'd like to see

I don't like the idea of a bare minimum size enclosure for either of my reptiles, I mean, my dogs have free roam of the house and a backyard, so they have plenty of room, it's only fair to give my other animals plenty of room as well, tho I'll be taking them out to explore and not leave them I their enclosure all the time, that's why I got handleable reptiles, so I can interact with them 😁

    Was given a chocolate pewter ball python. Aprox age I was told was over a year and half. It's around 17 inches and about as round as 50 cent piece. It was in a 10 gallon seemed ok little flighty and hiss would go into as we call it cobra mode. As in rear up and head Cocked back in the S mode. in the 10 gallon. Moved it over to a 40 gallon it ate fine "frozen thawed" I allowed it to settle in for over a week and a half no handling.etc after feeding. It mostly stayed in its hide after eating. Has plenty of hides.etc went to handle it and seems to want to strike more. It's in a low traffic area in my bedroom. So far it's only struck once as I walked by the tank. So not sure what's going on. Went from flighty hissy.etc to now strikes any time you try to handle it. I've tried going from behind but it turns quick and strikes. So not sure what's going on.

    Hey Tony, sounds like you've got it set up nicely. Well done! It's just being a snake - that's what they do. Some will strike more than others but no matter how well you have it set up, they'll still have a natural fear of predators (humans), which will need to take time and work to overcome. I have a few videos on behavior and handeling that should help, but it's a process :-)
