Baling Hay with an Antique Tractor - Allis-Chalmers WD and Farmall Super C

In this episode, we are raking our hay with a Farmall Super C and an Oliver hay rake. We are baling with an Allis-Chalmers WD and a New Holland 268 square bailer. The hay gets hauled off with our 1971 International Loadstar. I hope you enjoy the antique equipment in operation!

I made my bales about a foot longer than what your look like. We had a chute on the baler and pulled a wagon behind and stacked them ad we baled. Good to see someone still using the older equipment. Used to make 4 to 5000 bales a year with a WD45 and a John Deere 24T baler. We had 4 wagons we could load about 140 bales ( about 280 your size). After my Son went to College, l would drop them on the ground like you, then my wife would pull a wagon with my pickup 🛻 and I would load and stack. We were only making about 6 to 800 by then. I would call folks we knew that needed hay and would sell them hay off the field, cheaper if they would pick them up and load in the field. Just a suggestion, store the baler in a shed or at least covered with a tarp. Also use some spray lube (WD-40 or something similar) on the knotter and bale chamber plunger. It Really Helps.

We do it very similar. WD on a 269 baler. On the ground. But, much easier to gather it with a 4-wheeler pulling an expanded-metal cart. 40 bales per load and do it all from the ground. Put up 1200 bales a year and we're in our mid-60s. Find a tedder as it will dry the hay much better than rolling the windrow with a rake twice.

You've got some good stuff to start with. New Holland makes great baling equipment. You either need a kicker and a couple of kicker bale wagons or a bale shoot and a couple of flat bed wagons. That baler should be a good one, but you should try to find a tractor with a little hp to run it. Also, you really should find a shield for the pto shaft. I'd hate for one of you to get wrapped up in it. You can try and pick up equipment at local auctions or in classified ads. Best of luck to you. Big Iron auctions among other auction services.

14:50 YOU need to make a ' stoneboat ' for the bales. Use 4 x 6 skids, 4 of them 8 feet long, 2 feet apart, or so. Bevel the front, so as to ride the ground like a boat. Screw a couple 1 inch thick, 4 x 8 plywood sheets to them. Add a one point hitch, and hook up to the tow pipe, at the right rear of baler. Saw a slot, about in the middle of the centre, 6 feet long. Stack bales, onto this, 3 or 4 on bottom row, 2 or 3 next, 1 or 2 next, to top it off. Then, just poke a long crowbar into slot, and push off onto field. THIS WILL SAVE YOU many less pickup points, with flatdeck, trucks, etc. (Add a 2 inch pipe, 2 feet long, in one front corner of this sled- place crowbar into this ) ;(from old farm boy)
