It was very nice to see dad helping son understand why the little square baler wasn't tying a knot on the baled hay.

You must have gotten the one we used when I was a kid! Had same issue with knotting. Worked great when it got dialed in. Grandpa blamed difference in today’s twine as opposed to yesteryears. But he was able to dial it in and run a full service custom hay business with this as the main square bailer. Thousands of bales baled and hauled over the five summers I worked. Just like that young man on the three wheeler. 6 years old raking hay with a Massey 35. By the time I was eleven, I had worked more hours than a high school kid with a part time burger career. Awesome to see this old beast pound some grass!

I have a square baler identical to that one purchased it to my uncle's family. My uncle bought it brand new it still works like new. Enjoy watching it work. Just a blast from the past. When I was a kid I helped load many bales of hay.

Girl that hay baler is older than that boy. I'm 70 years old and back when I was a kid my grandpa bought one of those brand-new it didn't tie strings worth a damn back then. In fact that baler was the reason that as soon as they come out with a wire tie my grandpa changed over.

We dragged a stuker behind the baler and made a 10 bale stuke. Tractor with the right set of forks could lift the whole stuke on to the wagon. Saved a little handling.

This is horse and hobby farm country, so square bailing is still what we do with the best hay and straw....except we use balers with kickers that throw them up into a caged hay wagon. As you know that is still a lot more work than rolling and moving round bales, but you get at least twice as much $$$ and the buyers come to us.

I did find that that key that goes through the knotter gear that holds the the knot it has a clip that opens where that piece comes back into the motor it has a gear on top the pain that goes through that gear which shear and it would miss about every 5th Bale and believe it or not even with that pen sheared it would bail

I think that old Massey baler did a good job, just needs a little work on the knotter or twine disc, does your son still have it? Sanders has really grown since then, he's catching up with his older brothers in size. Nice one, I wanted to watch the square baler do it's thing, a blast from the past. I hope your family stays warm and safe out there, with the weather that's coming. Have a Merry Christmas!

Just curious. Why don't you use a wagon. We baled a ton of extra every year and usually traveled up to 20 miles to get enough. We stacked on 8x 20 flatbeds. You wouldn't need that big for just on the farm but would be less carrying and bobcat usage.

Your problem might be took big of windrow they were designed for 7 ft equipment. Next time you cut make a smaller windrow. Whatever you do please shut the baler off before working on the knotters my cousin didn't 5 hours of surgery and he's lucky to have a hand . The arm that pulls the needles up got him. It was hard to watch that bit it's something you don't forget especially as i was the one holding things together on the 20 mile drive to the hospital . Please shut it off and turn it by hand he is blessed with a beautiful family and he doesn't need to go through that.

I bought my small square baler for $75 at an auction. It was stored inside all its life and had very little use. You won't find many people to pay much for an old baler no matter how much it was new.
