I'm meeting up with my daughter in Bali for 7-10 days in Bali, as a side-trip from a longer stay in southern Thailand as a (returning) solo-traveler. My question: I hear a lot about Nusa Penida... ...what about Nusa Lembongnan -- the smaller island on its NW side? I've looked at accomodations there -- they look good and reasonably affordable. But will I be missing out by not going to Nusa Penida? Or, conversely, are there affordable options to day-trip there from Nusa Lembongnan? [...liked and subscribed.]

Bali is overrated, change my mind. I felt there like it was't in Asia. The only thing that saves this island is its northern part, roosters and Balinese people when you get to know them better. Everything other than that is like a disneyland for Europeans and Americans in their spiritual awakening. Their profanation of Balinese temples and culture made me sick. Despite that, I enjoyed my stay there, but wouldn't recommend it for someone, who wants to see the true face of South-Eastern Asia. It is possible to achieve, but you have to keep yourself off the beaten track. Bali is an illusion.

but that’s 10% of Bali, the South. I talk about it in the video but Bali is waaay more than the Coast going from Uluwatu to Canggu + Ubud. Bali can absolutely be real and authentic if you venture north and west specially 🙏 I’m not saying all of the tourist or expat areas are bad areas (sure they’re full of traffic and not authentic enough) but I live near Canggu when I’m in Bali (it’s confortable with great cafes and a community of digital nomads, mostly expats) However, I will never advise people to visit such crowded and inauthentic places. So many people JUST visit those places when they come to the island, they’re missing the real Bali! When I TRAVEL in Bali I go out of that 10%! Hope this comment and the video helps you see my views on Bali 😀 Still, If you’re looking for an immersive cultural South East Asia experience there might be more destinations that are completely remote, yes, but Bali has such a fascinating culture, amazing nature and traditions. You just need to venture out of the tourist areas.

I think that's not fair for Balinese, sure it's really heavily touristy but I think there's not many places in southeast Asia where the youngs still practicing their traditional dances, traditional music instruments like what they do in Bali, you could prove that by asking how many young Balinese still able to play their gamelan. Try that in some other places in southeast Asia, some even don't know how the culture of their ancestors before colonisation yet they're not that touristy compared to Bali, it just the original culture is long forgotten or wiped out long before tourism, worse some of them even don't have any relics to explain the forgotten past replaced with colonizer's culture. How much better Bali if you take that perspective. But yeah, take the positive side, Land in Bali to explore many more authentic destinations in Indonesia is a plus for Bali, better than landing in some big cities, I reckon. I would recommend Sumba island, and Mentawais to learn more about authentic tribal cultures in Indonesia. Sumba is one of the last tribe exist today that still practicing megalith culture plus their beaches and surf waves is pretty good. No need to introduce Mentawais if you do surf, you'll know what Mentawais is.

@@simplyyank1119 I completely agree with you. Bali really retains its unique traditions and ways of living, even with the big amount of tourists. There are incredible cultural experiences around Indonesia and I really can't wait to go to Sumba and specially Mentawais (I have plan to visit these islands on my next Indonesia trips), but Bali can be real and authentic once you leave the crowded south and visit the many cultural and nature wonders this beautiful island has!
