Bales of Cardboard vs. Garbage Truck
Ойын-сауық
Tamalpais Community Services District (TCSD) runs a small fleet of trucks, mostly mini MSL's and a few rear loaders. This is one of two 2003 Mack LE Heil 5000 Rear Loaders that they have, doing a commercial cardboard route. The route itself is very small, consisting of only four stops. This video features the largest of those four: the local grocery store. They have taken quite an unusual approach to cardboard collection, bailing it, and then having one of their forklifts lift the bails one by one into the truck. This was pretty interesting to see, as it's definitely a fairly uncommon way to see cardboard collected. Big thank you to the forklift driver, as well as the driver of the truck, for being super cool with us filming. Enjoy!
Filmed September 2023, alongside Nic. Big thanks to him for putting in the work to help us find this truck.

Brings a whole new meaning to the expression 'flat packed' 😂
I've seen entire truckloads of baled cardboard on a flatbed truck going to somewhere, where I live in Australia. I've seen that they also will take loose cardboard and pack it directly into a blade compactor or an industrial waste bin for pickup as cardboard only by a front loading garbage truck with a packing blade that's about the width and height of the interior of the interior of the garbage truck. Some larger commercial retail stores will have a dedicated hooklift cardboard packer set up where they only have it picked up when it's full. It all seems to depend on the volume of cardboard recycling material they're handling for the customer.
I have never seen this before😮
Fantastic! Very familiar spot lol, drove through there every weekday for two-three years. Good Earth sure is unique, with the line of recycling carts and the bailed cardboard. Never knew TCSD picked the bails up though, thought it was a third party hauler. Glad to see another video of this classic truck, and Orlando!
Twice bailed cardboard my favorite
very unique. I had no idea they did this out there. Mack LE's sound great too!

Thanks! Yeah, love LEs!
The back of our cardboard compactor at Home Goods in Cedar Rapids Iowa goes to International Paper off C Street Southwest in Cedar Rapids Iowa.
Very nice find.`

Thank you!
In europe, we have whats called a "baleclaw" that we use the binlift too lift the hole bale with the claws... pretty much normal tool too have on our garbagetrucks :)
Hey Mate I’m a Garbo from Sydney Australia and this brought back a few memories from the old company I used to work at which specialised in Paper / Cardboard and Bale Collections. We did the exact same sorta work that’s featured in this video aswell as a collect a few bins / carts along the way. One thing we would do is that when we where loading bales into the truck we wouldn’t come front on to the back of the truck with the fork lift we would come side on so that when we pushed the bales off the forklift tynes into the hopper the strings on the bales would go from the left to the right of the truck instead of up and down ( Hopefully you understand what I mean ) then we would cut the strings with a box cutting knife and pack it. By having the strings going from the left to right side of the truck we where able to pack in a lot more cardboard and bales as a pose to when we would pack bales with the strings facing up and down. My old boss took particular interest in American Waste Equipment as he likes how the sweep blades open up wider on the Heil’s and McNeilus rear loaders aswell as the stronger hydraulics allowing for great loads of cardboard to be packed on and the durability of the trucks is also another key factor in favouring these for bale collection over Australian equipment. The company runs a few trucks including a Hook Lift, Front Lift, A few flatbeds and a hand full of rear loaders including a few Aussie trucks aswell as a Heil F5000 and a McNeilus. The F5000 was originally on a Hino but after working it hard for so many years the body got refurbished and placed onto a new 6x4 Isuzu. The McNeilus was originally mounted on a Hino 8x4 Road Ranger. I believe two McNeilus where originally used somewhere in Europe ( Maybe London or UK I can’t remember 100% ) but two McNeilus where imported from Europe to Melbourne Australia and used by an unknown company. Eventually both of the trucks were listed for sale online. The last I heard One truck still remains in Melbourne in its Original Blue / White Paint scheme ontop of the 8x4 Hino. My Ex Boss managed to scoop up the other one and use it for a few years as was until about 2 years ago when he refurbished the body put a new bin lifter on that’s compatible with Australian bins and upgraded the 8x4 Hino Cab / Chassis to a brand new Isuzu 8x4. From memory off the top of my head we were packing i would say around 7-10T of cardboard bales on with a few bins thrown into the loads along the way too. I have a few photos of the McNeilus I can send your way on Facebook or Email if you like. I’ll try to post up a video of some Aussie Bale collections within the next few coming days.

Glad to hear you enjoyed! I know exactly what you’re talking about. I’ve seen the videos of cardboard collection in Australia, and honestly I really like it! Nice to see clean, pure loads of cardboard going to the recycle center.. that’s not too common here unfortunately, due to mixed/single stream recycling systems. That’s super cool! I’ve never seen McNeilus trucks in Europe, but it’s funny how they where there, and then ended up all the way in Australia, which is something I never would have thought. Really cool to hear that they’re being refurbished, as well as rebodied onto new cabs/chassis, to keep them running, as they a really are great trucks from what I’ve heard and seen. Sounds odd seeing one on a Hino or Isuzu, as I’m so used to seeing them on Mack’s, Autocar’s, and Peterbilt’s. I’d love to see those photos you have of them! Do you have an Instagram?
Interesting!
This is one interesting approach. I can't help but wonder who pays who, and how much it's all worth to who. I've seen many ideas, but this is..... unique. And a truck I would happily work on. No stench of rotten trash but still paid decent? all day!
Next time show the the ejection plate is against the load inside the body it will pack the load a lot better as I drove a rear loader for BFI waste system Los Angeles ca. for 10 years
Nice video !
This makes no sense unless that’s how the recycling center picks it up.

I know, it's weird. It's just easier for the store to bail it like this. I guess it takes up less space. The truck does a cardboard only route, so it ends up at the recycle center.
I've never seen anything like this before. I thought bails of cardboard were hauled away by tractor trailer beds.
How many bales can it take and how do you kmow when its full ?
IT WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE TO KNOW WHERE THE CARDBOARD GOES & WHAT COMPANY PAYS FOR IT & HOW MUCH THEY GET PAID FOR IT. I LIVE IN MARTINEZ & MY BUILDING RECYCLES BUT SOME IDIOTS WHO LIVE HERE KEEP THROWING IN HOUSEHOLD GARBAGE INTO THE RECYCLING BINS. I RECYCLE EVERYTHING I CAN AND HAVE FOR 17 YEARS.

Yes. It is indeterminate here as to where that is going. Is it in the process of being dumped or is it their way of getting it from the given business to the recycling yard. Cardboard recycling yards will often re-bale incoming stock to have it how they want it, because of advance knowledge that the original baling is usually fraught with contamination. But you never can exactly tell with humanity.

It depends on the hauler, and the state of the material (whether or not its contaminated). Sorry to hear about the people contaminating the bins, stuff like that happens unfortunately. Keep on recycling!
I know that was a heavy load most bails like that you looking 1000lbs

Yeah not light for sure!
Surely all that sorted recyclable material is not just being binned!!??

Of course not! This is just how they take the cardboard to the recycle center.
You can actually look at the driver and tell he's clueless just keep the blade out and it'll fall under
I hope the store is making money from them bail I know for a fact you can make 300-400 a bail where I'm from
Seems like an expensive truck doing an odd job. Better running a flat bed for that sort of work, far lower running cost on a flat bed than a compactor.
The truck driver lost y'all a real special type of guy
Why dont they just load it onto a flatbed ?
The whole point of making cardboard bales is to recycle them.
Why would you take clean baled cardboard, already in a perfectly saleable condition and then run it through the back of a packer? Very wasteful.

Could be there are no buyers in the area that picks up bales? It does condense all that corrugated so it's easy to store and load.

There are no buyers in the area who would take them like that. Instead, the garbage company picks them up like this. The truck in the video only picks up cardboard on this route, so at the end of the route the truck is filled with clean cardboard, which is then taken to the recycle center.

pas tres bon chauffeur de lift
why waste time bailing
Lol the forklift operator and truck operator are both inexperienced it's clearly he doesn't know what he is doing as far as operating the truck trust me been in trash business for over 25years and the forklift operator just needs to place it over the edge let forks down they working themselves lol 😅 rookies
They ought to be given a hefty fine & at least 10 years in prison for such wasteful tactics!
Recycling in a whole is such a waste.. most of the time its for show ..
What a waste
