The contrast of Durge & Tav runs is really interesting to me as a someone who likes the “good” path. Durge’s redemption path has a ton of great content and constantly makes me think of the years of fun I got out of BG1&2. But you are left knowing what a grotesquely evil character Durge was before the “incident” that took his memory, and you’re left wondering if he deserves any kind of happy ending. Tav can be purely good, and you don’t have to angst over your actions nearly as much. But Tav never feels as much part of the story as Durge. That’s good writing.

Good guy Durge feels the closest to BG1 and 2. It also feels softly canonical much like how they did with BG1 and 2's canon. The Durge redemption arc is dramatically satisfying. It also pairs well with the rest of the party who, if you're playing a good guy, in many cases have redemption arcs themselves.

My Durge run was going to be a reception arc one. I had him resist all the urges and coming into act 3 was being your standard hero type. However my romance partner out of left field said we missed our chance to connect and basically dumped me after all I've done for them and siding with them the whole game. So i decided to roll with it and turned into a betrayed evil character and chose to become the slayer.

@@battlerushiromiya205I mean you are right, but most games with multiple endings or choices that drive the narrative still have a cannon through-line that the MC followed, usually helps to set up for the next games down the pipe to just have one storyline to account for. Let's us have our cake and they get to eat it too.

@@raftermanDK Without any spoilers all I can say is that Durge was VERY VERY evil person before he lost his memories so you dont have to go extra mile to make him even more evil for better redemption becasue the game will do it for you and If you destroy the grove then Karlach and Wyll will leave your party and they have extra dialogue options if you play as Durge and if you save the Grove there is still a way to recruit Minthara at Act 2 if you knock her out then she is temporarily hostile. If you are planning to go for redemption then just play as the good guy that is brutal to those who are also evil because trust me his background is very well written.

My first play through was 177 hours, and I played the entire thing split screen co-op with my girlfriend. I absolutely love playing co-op games, so I have built up many habits to facilitate this over the years, like constantly narrating what I’m doing, keeping in constant communication, making sure we talk through every decision before proceeding, and making sure we share powerful items and such. She had zero co-op etiquette. We struggled for the first 20 hours of the game just trying to establish expectations and communication. Once we got that down, that playthrough became my favorite gaming experience of all time. Sharing laughs and tears, and hurling angry screams at the game for untimely failed rolls… I’ll never forget it. I absolutely recommend finding someone to play through the entirety of this game with, but you have to make sure it’s someone who’s play style will match yours.

It certainly is much closer to the feel you get out of playing real RPG with other people, as you get the banter, planning, discussing decisions etc that you don't have in a single player video game.

I am genuinely astonished about how fast you go through a playthrough and how many of them you can do in such a short time. As a big fan of cRPGs I'm planning on going back to BG3 after doing 3 runs of WH40k: Rogue Trader, one for alignment. I'm actually on my second one, and some days I'm just thinking: "I've got enough of this". These kind of games are very long and detailed even if you don't need to read everything again because you remember it, so I'm really admiring you and very curious about your method 😂

It was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed my 4th playthrough, which was a dark urge I initially intended to play to see all the evil content, but ended up as more morally grey - lots of succumbing to the urge, but mustering the courage to save everyone at the end. This was post new endings and felt really good / tragic. The tragic / evil endings aren't as fleshed out which was a shame, but still my favourite playthrough by far. Teared me up!

Kind of a hard agree on Honor mode it's the difficulty i now always chose for the game even tho i sadly fell victim to a bug in it that cost me my furthest "proper run", where i didn't die and use the continue as custom mode. But it forcing you to live with your descisions is just so great, especially if you have beaten it atleast once already.

The game did run out of steam for me on that second playthrough once I had the answer as to how certain events would play out. I loved the game overall, but I did find that playing it a second time so soon after the first did feel repetitive at times, especially for quests/encounters that are always going to play out the same way.

I've completed the game 9 times and have 4 or 5 other runs that have reached at least Act 2. My favorite is also my first run for many of the same reasons as you list. It was the first time I saw the Shart/Nightsong scene, First time experiencing the Emperor reveal, First time getting the touching Lae'zel sunrise scene, etc. Played a Wild Elf Barbarian Ranger Tav on that first run. Totally non-optimized and challenging. Good times. 2nd favorite run was my first Durge run. I played as a Drow Stealth Archer, romanced Minthara, and went the redemption route. 3rd favorite is my first Honour Mode run. I played a Githyanki Monk Tav after failing my first two attempts. Had a couple close calls, but got to ride off on the dragon with Lae'zel at the end. She denied me that ride on the first run because I was ghaik, which was the one bummer from my first run. I am currently doing a multiplayer run with my kids. This will probably end up being my favorite run. I'm letting my youngest daughter take lead because it is her first run, and it is fun seeing her make uninformed decisions to put the rest of us in a pickle and then trying to get out of it.

One of my favorite moments was a very recent one. Ive been trying to beat honor mode in 4 player co-op with three of my friends. We’re on attempt 4, and my favorite moment to come of this was failing to save Isobel at the Last Light ambush. Was it good? No. But it’s my favorite. It showed me something I probably never would have seen because normally I’d just revert a save and try it again, and it made our party think and plan more carefully. Without Isobel, we lost all of the Harper backup at the battle for Moonrise, so we had to really think our actions through as the four of us with Jaheira fought tooth and nail to get up to the roof.

I have tried 5 times to beat Honor Mode - still not successful. 3 of those runs ended very early - the one before my current was at 80 hours and wiped on the Murkal fight - I just couldn't heal and everyone was feared - sad part is had him down to 20 hp left... just needed 20 more damage .. just couldn't get it.. was heartbreaking. my first full playthrough (started solo, then restarted with a friend, then his wife joined, then they got bored out of the game in 2nd act...) was as an inquisitor from warhammer fantasy: paladin (oath broken ofc), human, dark urge (RPd it like a demon tempting my character), total xenophobe, so laezel thrown out the ship at first sight, shadowheart being somewhat human-like was spared, astarion lived, until revealed being an abomination (vampire). same with wyll - contract with a devil? herecy! death! and, you guessed it, karlach murdered. i helped druids in the grove to get rid of tieflings, but then it was revealed that druids are tainted by dark magic - killed. goblin camp was killed cuz duh! goblins! whole underdark was cleared of filthy muties and xenos (duergars and mushrooms). 2nd act was kinda chill - much less murders. 3rd act - rejected baal at the end, betrayed false emperor, made an illithid out a guy in a prism, killed him at the end.

I think playing as origin characters is massively underrated. I'd always rather play as a strongly written character that I can roleplay as, like Geralt, instead of Random Face McNoBackstory.

I don't understand how you manage to play these epic games multiple times, and still have time to 100% several other games at the same time and create all of the content for your channel. I can't imagine that you have much down time Mort lol.

It's funny for me first playthrough was actually least favourite by large margin. Trying to figure out level appropriate path through act 1 and being completely overwhelmed when entering lower city were probably most annoying parts of it. Got some nasty bugs on top of that, as game was patched several times mid-run.

I only finished two playthroughs, normal good aligned and a durge. Im on my third attempt at Honour, first one got bugged and lost like 30 hours, second I lost to Cazador (it hurt me so bad ) and now im a Monk fighting everything, not a single persuasion or intimidation to avoid a fight and using all cheats possible and barrelmancy. Im just speedrunning the game at this point cuz I want the achievement ( im miserable)

I really need to get back into BG3, I got to Act 3 and was so overwhelmed I started a new game. Loved act 1 and 2 so much, I'll try and finish it next time. My favourite playthrough of this game was actually the very first version of early access back in October 2020. It was way more difficult, fights could go on for hours and it was so satisfying to finally beat something so high above your level I hope they finish up with major patches soon because I am really against content being drip fed into a single player game. It breaks mods and kind of dilutes the new content a bit because you pretty much need to to play through the game again and again just to experience bite size pieces, when I personally would rather just have them all in one package from the get go

Know the feeling, i restarted like 4 times after hitting act 2 and once after hitting act3 with tav bardlock. Just yesterday i finally finished my first run playing a good durge bladesinger build which i organically managed to copy by accident. Restarted my rogue trader run after the release of BG3 on xbox which was put on hiatus due to it releasing on xbox just one day before bg3.

Not sure if you read comments and react to them but I wanted to ask: how are you able to do TWELVE playthroughs? I really love this game. It's probably in my top 5 games of all time, ever played. I've done 1 full playthrough and started over several times for a 2nd one. I just can't get into it. I started as a Dark Urge for the second one and while the additional and cutscenes are cool, it doesn't change the game enough for me. In my first playthrough I explored every little corner of every map. Discovered almost every secret. It took me 200+ hours to reach the end. I probably missed a few things due to choices but I probably explored 90%+ of the game, the areas and quests. I looted everything I could find. Between 4 consistent party members and the occasional swap-ins for quests, the only classes I did not end at least checking out a little were Barbarian, Paladin, Druid and Bard. Incidentally also the classes that draw me in the least. Playing a Dark Urge is fun, but it's hard to RP with hindsight knowledge. I don't want to miss out on certain items or make certain choices that change the game in certain ways. But if I strictly RP I probably should. I guess in my mind the min maxer and RP'r are having a constant power struggle. Overall though, most of the wonder and magic the game has on a first plathrough is gone with hindsight knowledge and I find it doesn't pull me in nearly as much as it did that first time. So my question is, how do YOU deal with that. Or do you simply not experience the feelings I have in subsequent playthroughs? Where do you get the motivation to keep playing?

  • @MortismalGaming

    @MortismalGaming

RP isn't of great importance to me, I enjoy seeing all the options and learning 'what happens if I do this' type of stuff. Every playthrough was aimed at a very specific experience it could provide that I had not or could not see in others. Motivation for me is my own compulsive need to do it/make content & money from this channel.

Hey, Mort! Nice topic ! It was curious to know that your first playthrough was the best! Let me ask you something! Have you ever reconsidered doing reviews after 100%? I mean.. don't get me wrong, we love your reviews! Its just that sometimes I worry about the time you take to get this done, you know? I'm also a physician, so I actually worry about this stuff all the time (sorry if I'm being disrespectfull or intruding your personal space). I just wanted you to know that we'll still love and enjoy your work, even if they were reviews after 90% kkk Take care, friend! And let us play together sometime!
