The custom seems very genuine and uncontaminated by greed. When the UN promulgated the universal declaration of human rights after world war 2, the issue of paying a bride price (not dowry) was debated and equated to buying & selling women. The custom was defended by white anthropologists who argued that the custom is based on the concept of "debt", on which all human relations are built. E.g. debt of gratitude to parents, the world economic system is based on debt, Jesus paid a debt for our sins, etc.
