The custom seems very genuine and uncontaminated by greed. When the UN promulgated the universal declaration of human rights after world war 2, the issue of paying a bride price (not dowry) was debated and equated to buying & selling women. The custom was defended by white anthropologists who argued that the custom is based on the concept of "debt", on which all human relations are built.
