Baitcaster How to: Remove a Backlash/Birdnest in Under 1 Minute!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Baitcaster How to: Remove a Backlash/Birdnest in Under 1 Minute! Here is a demonstration on how to remove a birdnest/backlash from your baitcasting in the reel in less than one minute. This method is tried and tested, here are step by step instructions:
Patiently pull line from the reel until the spool no longer turns, then take your thumb and apply firm pressure to the spool, while turning the crank with the other hand. Allow a few revolutions and then engage the free spool, start slowly pulling line from the reel until the knotting and backlash is completely cleared. Be gentle because you may have more knots and you don't want to damage your line. If you find that there is more to clear, repeat the steps above until the birdnest is completely removed. Once finished, tightly reel up the slackline to prevent potential future backlashes.
Practice makes perfect, this couldn't hold more true. Become familiar with your reel and learn how to fine-tune and adjust with each type of lure. The more practice that you have the easier it will be and you will then of course build confidence. Be sure to check out my video on how to fine-tune your baitcaster: • Tuning Your Baitcaster...

I was 30 when I got back into fishing. Did some when younger at our farm pond. 56 now. Self taught on how to use a bait caster before any KZread and a spinning rod. and have been picking out backlashes for 26 years. Only had 2 or 3 that had to be cut out. Right before this video was one saying this method has the potential to kink the u-bend where it is overlapped and causing the “knot”. Thus causing line breaking when tugging on a hangup or worse yet a large fish. If it worked for you , great. I always viewed it as more zen time.

Its because ypur not reeling a knot tighter, your tightening the loose line underneath which is why its all knotted in the first place. The line further down thw spool has came loose and is getting caught in the line closer to the bait.

This technique won't work for all applications. It works best for mono or fluorocarbon but won't work for braid. The reason it works best for fluorocarbon and mono is that you get a birdnest where it's not tangled up but just lifted off the spool vs a true birdnest where the line is interwind and tangled up. Hope this helps some what.

Yea, open the side plate, then pick the crap out of it until it loops back under the old loops, great way to cut off and waste half the line from the spool, been there done that lol

This doesn’t work for me. I have an older baitcaster and it spins when I put too much thumb pressure on. It’s like my drag is messed up. Any advice?

What a great tip, that's why I watch these videos, to learn stuff like this. I don't need to watch a pro pull in 25 fish, I can do that, I need to know how better to fish and some of the little tricks of the trade that make fishing more fun for me (pulling in 25 fish or UN-tangling a birds nest in a few minutes). You just got a new subscriber.

Thank you. That's really impressive. Knowing that 40 years ago would have saved me MANY hours on the bank picking out knots! FYI, you're disengaging the reel when you put it in free spool. You're engaging when you reel in.

Great vid man! I just got my first bait caster ever and I've been so Intimidated to use it because first cast I threw (hoping it wouldn't happen) I made a huge birds nest in my reel and ended up just having to cut all my line. I haven't used it for a few weeks because of. But this method seems very useful and I be sure to use it next time I get a birds nest
