BAIC Beijing 5 (aka Senova X55) - Chinese RAV4 and Tiguan Rival (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Beijing 5, also known as the BAIC X55 II or the Senova X55, is about the size of the Toyota RAV4. It is available in one trim level (at least in Poland), with a lot of kit as standard. However there's a catch. More about it in the review.
Beijing is produced by BAIC Motor, which is part of the Beijing Automotive Group. BAIC is a Chinese state-owned company, and its technological partners include Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai. BAIC has almost 10 percent stake in Damiler.

Brilliant review Matek. I actually own a BAIC X55 II for 6 months now and i am very happy. 10.000km so far. The Screen-Mirror function is actually more convenient to me than Android Auto. I agree with your assessment of the assistant systems, however contrary to EU-Standard cars, you can switch them off. 😄 But hey, the price point vs quality is unmatched. It is really good value for the money.

Love the fact you actually take the time to measure boot capacity. Please do so for all cars, as manufacturers tend to offer the maximum/optimum capacity (including under the boot floor and side pockets).

If it doesn't seem right, I make my own rough measurements. To this day I have no idea, where the Renault get 391 liters from in Clio 5. It's barely 300. Lexus ES on the other hand has a bigger boot, than they state.

Thanx Marek for such nice review, that car looks amazing.... People like to complain about Chinese cars, yet they are driving other people's brands, and it's simple "make your own car brand and compete with Beijing", it's sad to see people bad mouth other people's brands not knowing how hard that company worked to make that car....some they can't even put a bicycle on a production line but yet they complain. We are here for positive reviews nd we thank u for ur energetic review of such beautiful car. 😊

Thanks for the review Marek. This is definitely an interesting one. I've just returned from a trip to China and the rate of vehicle development since I was there 5 years ago is astounding. The cars do certainly still have their issues, especially in regards to software calibration and the question marks over reliability and support, but plenty of 'cheap rubbish' is already being sold to us by more well known car brands. I wouldn't be surprised a few legacy carmakers go out of business because of these Chinese companies in the near future. I'll be interested to see if BAIC can make inroads into the European market with this car. It seems like good value, and some of the issues you pointed out won't be dealbreakers for some people.

I think Poland is their second market after Germany. I'm not even sure if in Germany their presence is full-on or it's just limited import. In Poland they are planning a nationwide dealer network (based on existing dealer brands of course), so it's a relatively big operation.

I think Chinese brands in general will attract some Dacia customers (the new Duster starts around 20k, and a fully loaded one will be close to Beijing 5 or MG HS, while the smaller Chinese crossovers start at around 18k). Suzuki will have hard time justifying the price of the 20th facelift of the S-Cross, and so will Mitsubishi with the ASX, which is a Renault Captur. And if someone's considering the Eclipse Cross PHEV, they should be locked up in a mental institution. Clearly they are not fit to function in a society, let alone drive :) Bottom spec RAV4, Tiguan, Sportage are 10k more expensive, and 12-15k if you want some creature comforts. Also for many people being able to shut off all the safety systems permanently is actually a benefit. In Poland private buyers switch cars every 10-15 years (and they feel cheated that they have to do it so often, because the quality clearly isn't what it used to be :) ). Most safety features, which are now in 2nd-3rd gen and are mandatory, 10 years ago were available only on high end cars, and usually as an option. So many people are annoyed by them. This is my problem with BMW's OS8. It wasn't a gradual shift for me, but a complete change from OS7, which was already quite complex. Back to Chinese cars: MG4 fully loaded costs less than base trim ID.3. If I were VW, I'd be shitting my pants now.

In the 1960’s we we transitioned from mainly British/American/European cars to Japanese cars. The cheap, reliable Japanese cars conquered our market for decades then the Korean car invasion started with cheaper offerings. Now we’re having the Chinese vehicle invasion which once again offers cheaper options which are safe, we’ll equipped and generally reliable. Each of these transitions has pushed those who once dominated the market into smaller volumes and so the cycle continues. Tariffs and sanctions are now being threatened as markets face price competition in the countries that once dominated the car manufacturing industry. From a consumer perspective these more affordable cars generally have good warranties and are our only way of getting into a safer, more economical, more reliable and more enjoyable car to drive.

Well, a petrol Rav4 in Bulgaria starts for about 35,000 euro, but that's the lowest trim possible. A couple of years ago a bought a fully speced Mitsubishi Outlander for 31,000 euro brand new.

I wonder how BAIC would price its cars in Bulgaria then. Because value for money is their main appeal.

The name 'Beijing' alone would not allow me even to consider this car, apart from a lot of other 'quirks'. Interesting review as usual. This is just low price driven cr@p bait that will become expensive a little later.

Why so cheap? Because that stupid motor is consuming TWICE as a normal 1.5 turbo one....is crazy how much can eat at 100km range...I have not seen a 18% at 100KM inside city and 10% outside....while a 1.5 L VW eats outside under 5.8 L.

The Imoprt company for Europe is located in Germany and does this for around 30 years now ;) they have a big storage, and maintenance contracts - if needed they fly it over here from china within 7 days and no extra costs.
