Bafang freewheel replacement

Does the pedals suddenly disconnect from the power train on your mid-drive electric bike? In this tutorial I show how to replace worn out freewheel and chain ring gear on a BBS02 motor (750W, 48V). Spare parts were ordered from California e-bikes. Enjoy!

    This video was the best! I changed my worn clutch cog and paw after watching this. If this video didn't exist I would not have been able to match the symptoms of my 7 year old bafang or know what part to buy or how to get the unit apart. Thank you Pär

    Thanks really helpful video. And yes it can be done without removing the motor. Good tip on how tight those screws are in the main gear assembly. Didn't use an impact driver but I did use a hammer and a perfectly fitting screw. Got to apply a lot of pressure and go carefully but an impact driver would be safer. Thought my issue was the freewheel which it probably is but I see that the gear assembly is also stuffed.

    Hi man. Thanks for video it helped me change freewheel. However 200 more miles since changing (4000+ total on this unit), I started to hear a sporadic cracking noise which combines with a gear not engaging. Then change gear and back to normal and so on. I think it could be the bearing inside the nylon gear altho is not obvious.

    Thank you so much Par. I took some bad advice from other videos and ran into problems. I changed the pedal assist on a Bafang BBS02 from 3 to 9, and I changed the LSPD setting from the original setting that I think is 10 to the maximum setting of 32. Everything was wonderful until it wasn't. I'd take off slow at about PDS 3 and work up to 9 at full speed and everything worked for a few weeks and suddenly the motor would just die. It was random and confusing. If I shut the power off and went into a store, it might work when I came back out.... Or maybe not. I found that if I played with the peddles by jogging them back and forth, it would catch every now and then and I could continue on. It was really embarrassing. I replaced the motor and left the settings at peddle assist 3 and set the LSPD, to 20. and I haven't had any problems so far ,but I have friends and family wanting me to build them e-bikes and I don't know if the problem is in the controller, or the amperage because I changed the settings....or both. Your comments would be truly appreciated. I don't want to go forward and build a bike for my friends just to let them down.

  • @parflodin3819

    @parflodin3819

    One should be carful using the gears properly. But just because you have 5 gears on your care doesn't imply your weak motor can't handle it. It all depends on how you use it, - adapt force to the gear used. Similarly, a 52 chain ring is not (necessarily) a problem, assumed you use them as well. Secondly, it is not the motor that broke. It is the freewheel, transferring your leg-power (and not your e-power) to the wheel. Possibly I put to much force when pedalling. However, the main thing I guess, is to put grease in inside and around the freewheel, as some already mentioned in the comments.

    @@parflodin3819 The freewheel you replaced here is likely designed for pedal torque typically produced with a cadence of at least 50-60 rpm; if you often pedal at lower rpm, especially while pedaling uphill, you likely are not using the best choice of derailleur gears. That large (52 tooth?) sprocket should be used with large rear sprockets to avoid excessive crank torque. Other possible causes of that damage include dirty or inadequate grease, and high motor speeds. If you pedal too slowly (low cadence) under heavy load, you risk damage to your knee joints in you legs. I've seen that happen to 'slow grinders' in my bike club. Try to choose 'gears' that allow pedaling at 70-100 rpm in *all* situations; you actually produce more power more efficiently that way!

There are some videos that show step by step. The demonstrator was a woman that worked at Bafang. This was not an easy task.. I have since upgraded to the BBSHD for several reasons.. Getting to the freewheel is much simpler. and with 1000w, it utilizes the power better without overheating and burning up the motor. The 750w was good, And the 1000w is far better
