Watch Mike's reaction to Baelin's Route by ‪@VivaLaDirtLeague‬!!
Baelin's Route follows the computer-character Baelin and his scripted loop around the fantasy world of Azerim. However on this particular journey Baelin bumps into a nasty Adventurer in the middle of an escort mission, overseeing a young NPC girl named Willow. After deciding he’s sick of the quest, the Adventurer turns on Willow to intentionally fail his quest, however Baelin intervenes and saves Willow. It’s now up to Baelin to escort Willow through the harsh world of Azerim back home to her family.

Legend has it, Baelin was the first NPC in the game, exiting before Azerim was even a thought in the designers' minds, present at the first dawn in Honeywood. He is VLDL's Tom Bombadil.

Before this movie aired, there was an Epic NPC Man episode where Baelin beat up a couple of asshole adventurers. Anyone who has seen that episode first shouldn't be surprised that Baelin can kick ass. I'm pretty sure Baelin is coded as a lethal joke character. A nice, one line NPC that will utterly wreck the shit of any player that thinks attacking and tormenting friendly NPCs is fun. As this movie shows, that has unintended side effects with newer game content and functions like recruiting NPC minions, and the Princess escort quest line.

I always love seeing someone discover Baelin's Route for the first time! They did have a kickstarter for it, and it garnered something like $600,000. That allowed them to really amp up the production values. They used the Howick Historical Village in Auckland for Honeywood, as always, but they took the whole crew to the South Island to film the actual "Route", hence the strong resemblance to LOTR - it's the same places. Willow is, canonically, 14 years old, but the actress who plays her (Phoenix Cross) was 23 at the time of filming. She also plays the Honeywood maiden in the Death Knight skits, and Lavinia, a Halfling Rogue in the DnD Logic series. She also played Rowan's Niece in the Bored episode of the same name. VLDL had another kickstarter campaign last year for getting their own studio, which raised 2.5 million US Dollars. That was recently completed, and has a new Bored store set, a brand new Honeywood Tavern set, and the largest permanent green screen in Auckland. The sets are modular, and can be rearranged, and re-dressed, to allow them to film many different series.

That "yeah, whatever, skip" got me, too. "'I can't fast travel because of this quest' ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?" I've felt that pain. There are NPCs in games like Skyrim that will put it on you if you decide to pick a fight, so this seems to tap into that aspect. I've ... discovered that the hard way sometimes.

I just love everything about this film. The visuals, the storytelling, the dialogue every gamer has heard and knows from years of hearing it again and again. But for me, the best part is the music. The sheer wholesomeness of the Honeywood theme, something that one can hear in a game and just... slow down and enjoy a moment of rest.. it inspired me to grab the soundtrack for those times when I need to remind myself: it's ok to just enjoy a bit of life.

There was a kickstarter and they did pretty well. They did Kickstarter specific sketches as well which were really funny. The same with their second one, using their various series to promote the project. As for Baelin, my own headcannon is that he was the first designed character and was meant to be the player's avatar when Skycraft, the name of the game in which Epic NPCman is set, was supposed to play as before they switched it to a MMORPG. As the intended 'hero' he would be incredibly powerful but when the genre shifted they used the asset and overlaid the fisherman NPC over it. This could have been done by a developer who wanted to give the indended hero the happy ending the player was supposed to experience upon completing the game; a world of peace in which the weary hero could retire, and fish, in peace.

Not only that, there's an Epic NPC Man episode made before this movie where Baelin beats up a couple of asshole players. Baelin is clearly coded to punish bad behavior on the part of any players who pick on him. Anyone who saw that episode wouldn't be surprised as to how well Baelin does in combat in this movie.

Just fyi, that's not Alan - Alan is Greg The Garlic Farmer. The character of Eugene, with that awesomely consistent cry, is played by Adam (who is also High Sorcerer Baradun). The trio of Alan, Adam, and Rowan (who plays Baelin and Bodger) is the original core of VLDL... though Ben (here the nasty adventurer, also Charles the Mugger) seems to now be joining that inner creative circle, and I'm betting that Britt (who really hates that bikini armour) might also be heading in that direction. Imho, they're all fantastic, so the more, the merrier! ^_^

It felt like when Star Trek: The Next Generation went theatrical with Generations: everything is still kinda the same but feels a lot grander! BTW: I feel like OwnedByPandas at 10:30 every time the Marines in Aliens: Dark Descent say "It's quiet ... too quiet ..." 😄

The level of game-awareness NPCs demontrate in this series can vary quite a bit between episodes Baradun and the Gravediggers know exactly what's going on, demonstrate knowledge of the real world, and choose to play along for their own reasons Greg and the Honeywood NPCs vaguely know they're in a game in some episodes but still see their world and themselves as "real" and carry on with their routines, obliviously Tinfoil hat man knows they're in a game and what that means but can't find a way of escaping

  • @DavidRomigJr

I’ve always taken it as Greg is not aware he is in a game but is very self-aware about his world. Talk about the outside world and settings confuses him, but he is rarely surprised about stuff he sees in the world. I thought Baradun was similar, but I saw some episodes lately and I was like, oh my, he knows this is a game, he just doesn’t care, and moreover he sometimes uses the knowledge to dick with players on purpose for fun. I found myself liking Baradun a lot more after that.

@davidromig2453 Oh, yeah, Baradun was directly stated in the NPC man D&D series to be fully aware of the game and how it works. I feel like after he tried to explain it to the woodcutter, he realized that the other NPCs just fall back on their programming when confronted with reality and just kind of screws with everyone now
