Ultra running documentary of my last race - Badger Mountain Challenge 100 miles ultramarathon, why is my 16th 100 milers trail running race in 16 months. Out-and-back 50 miles ultra trail in the Mountains of Eastern Washington. Running - or ultra running - 100 miles is never easy…what an adventure!

Does I think it’s fair to say I’m an experienced ultramarathoner by now, yet I’m always surprised by the challenge of long distance running - it’s obviously a fitness thing, but also, a mind game. You have to build up your body for this endurance sport, but also, build up your mind. I guess in a way, it’s not just “how to run 100 miles” but rather “why run 100 miles” that will get to you.
This ultramarathon in Eastern Washington mountains was no exception. Running with so much elevation is always physically challenging, event for fit athletes. But luckily, I’m not a fit athlete… I’m simply a stubborn mid-pack ultrarunner going for one more round! And what a round… For this race, the challenge was not running (although, my injuries did make that difficult too), but the REAL challenge was the condition. I don’t know the DNF rate, but I’m sure very high. The wind and the cold was something. Then you finally make it to that aid station, and guess what? … You can stay here, have a warm coco, and drop the race. …. Or… or! .. .just hear me out. You go out there, freeze your balls off, to run 5 more miles. … Yeah, I got this, no problemo! Get back to the aid station, shivering, cold to your bones after yet another ultrarunning challenge. … Get some soup. … Oh it feels good. Too bad, times up, you need to get out there again!
Trust me, stepping out of that aid station tent, leaving the warmth behind to face the dark, cold and windy ridge… that’s something. Something only REALLY stubborn people do.

lol then I highly suggest not looking up the Candy Mountain Song from Charly the Unicorn...they are soooo good at being annoying!
I run the Orchard a/s every year, and while I've been on all of the course several times (by mt bike), its still fun to get a runner's view of the event.

I enjoyed your video, Simon. It took me back to 2017 when I ran Badger. The cold and the wind haven't changed a bit. :) Congratulations on your finish, and on passing the 50-mile aid station test. I see you've done videos on some of your other 100-milers, and I'll check those out as well.

Thanks! I’m so glad the race director warned us - I can’t imagine getting on that ridge unprepared! And yes, I’ve been posting my races for about a year. I think wasatch and Leadville are some of my most interesting

Hard to believe that the wind during Jackpot Ultra was good practice for this one...
Great video! Looks like we passed eachother when you were at mile 55 and I was at mile 45 (Candy Mountain A/S) Great work. Brutal course. Can't wait for next year :D

I ran Badwater and HURT which are very "goggins" ish, if that's a term. Those were his two first 100 milers (except the San Diego 1 mile loop one)
I had to stop watching half way through due to the stupid cartoon unicorns and dumb voices. Otherwise it was a great race recap and viewing of the trails. Skip the jokes please. There are a lot of other youtubers out there and if I want cartoons I'll watch them.
