I recently watched an episode of Motorway Cops and on there was a lorry who had driven down the inside lane under 'lane closure' signs and was pulled over by the cops and done as it is an offence. It was explained to him that to drive in that lane from the first lane closed sign is an offence and the long distance used is for his and everyone else's safety. He was not a happy bunny (obviously 'special').

This time, at 12:35, I completely agree with you over the leaner driver/instructor who should have 1) been going much slower along a high street full of hazards (I wold say 20 is the safe speed irrespective of the actual speed limit) and that 2) they should have stopped and at least given the car an opportunity to reverse out safer - although as you say it is completely wrong to be reversing onto a main road anyway.

If your turning off a motorway at the next junction, you need to be in the inside lane at 1mile before, this a good rule of thumb. It prevents your stress levels from climbing and everyone elses' If you're in the outside lane move to the middle at 2 miles before. However some Motorways are so busy that you have to get in a lot earlier.

I was actually stuck in that jam on the M25 on the 30th of Jan. And yes, always more than one idiot who insists on using the closed lane with a red X when that warning means the lane is closed because of an imminent stationary hazard. Perhaps they should put the explicit "lane closed" message in words on the gantry sign rather than just relying on symbols. I recall one day years ago an incident where lots of vehicles continued past a red X on the M25 and a little bit further down the road was a gantry matrix sign that read "red X means lane closed", which was the first time I'd ever seen that message.

I think 99+% lorry drivers are very dangerous drivers, the very nearly always tail gate and have poor stopping distances especially when loaded up. I used to drive along the M56 a lot and the things you see lorry drivers doing in their cabs: phones, laptops, eating food etc and then wandering off down the hard shoulder, scary.

They have all these speed cameras linked to those motorway signs, why not set that lane to 0mph, so it triggers every time someone drives through the X sign. BTW, the red X was chosen on the basis, so many can't read these days (OK, for foreign drivers). Drive through 1 = a fine and 4 points; drive through 2 = disqualified for 3 months, 6 points AND quadruple the fine.

I found the analysis of the M’way signals, leading up to the van responsible, really interesting. It never seems, to me, as if there’s a ‘coherent’ string between one warning & the next! I gotta ask, tho’ - why didn’t any of the overhead signs just (or additionally) say ‘J6 exit closed’? Wouldn’t this have informed drivers & help manage traffic a little better?

one reason ive stopped using motorways esp around Birmingham its very busy and low limits just means trucks few ft of your rear bumper it lethal and stressful because being so close they can not see me it a guess so if i need to stop or car fails im getting hit. i feel the same rule should apply 10mph under posted limit like when its a 70 they can legally do 60mph so when its a 50 they should only be allowed to do 40 as it far more safe as you do not want to hang around a truck so sooner you get passed the better but all bunched up doing same speed we will see a big pileup some point in the future and i do not plan being a part of it and yes last was was caused by fog / weather. bigger transport should be forced to go slower even if a temp speed limit like roadworks it make it safer for all. these days i stick to duels and single carriageways and tell you they much more enjoyable and over all you keep moving, m6 around Birmingham full average cameras horrid things and limit must change at nearly every overhead sign always busy and at least once you stop and on top all that you have trucks trying to push you even tho you are passing and id refuse to use hard shoulder on that road because the amount junctions changing lane more adds to danger so i stay flow traffic in normal lane 1 normally faster lane as everyone jumps to out side lane and it clogs. these days only time i use it if i travel at xmas day the roads empty. i take the fun more enjoyable pretty countryside way you have a nice mix roads keeps you alert than a huge road it gets boring esp a long motorway run but ive never got bored or tired taking the country way because normally you too busy to get bored or tired. im manly talking about the m6 around Birmingham so i avoid it unless on very rare occasions, i like roads you keep moving and see things along the way like nice pretty villages and towns

"why should he have to back off to let the other truck in?" I'd say to clear lane 2 otherwise the truck n lane 2 (regardless of how they ended up there) will start slowing down causing further traffic build up behind. At this point, I'd be inclined to be in lane 3 where you stay in lane 2, to give them space should 1 of them suddenly decide to change lanes, especially given how close they are. Obviously hard to say for sure if that would be possible without the rear view involved too but given there are 4 lanes, if theres not loads of vehicles approaching me to overtake, I'd go with lane 3 as lane 4 is still available for people to pass me. As for why you would stay in lane when there is a lane closure, where the lane closes, you have a merge in turn situation. Selfish drivers will change lanes early and then not leave space for others to merge when the lane closes because they are idiots who don't understand how merge in turn works and selfish because they make the traffic worse because by not leaving a gap, there will be more use of brakes and that causes more traffic. The first white van should have slipped into the space in front of you because, at the point of that sign, the lane is now closed so the vehicles should be merging in front of that sign. Hate to be devils advocate but you rubbernecking to see what the incident was has also held up hundreds of people behind you tho it was interesting to see on video, it's a terrible habit focussing on the crashed vehicle instead of driving your own

Regarding the clip about the car leaving it late to join the lane, I have heard the argument about making use of all the space in a lane before it runs out. I'm not sure about this myself, as it can be viewed as queue jumping. But that's an argument I've seen in favour.

If you are referring to the motorway clip where there are lane closed signs above marked by a red X it is not the same as "lane closes in 500 yards" as an example, it's an offence to travel in a lane marked closed with the red X, the moment you pass the red X you are committing an offence. What you are thinking of is a lane closure with a merge point which should be used to its fullest up until the merge point.

You can continue to use the lane all the time the arrows are present advising the lane is closed ahead. If traffic is flowing freely it is advised to move over early to aid flow and not leave it too late resulting in braking and slowing the carriageway down (not that it stops people). If traffic is already slow moving then using all the road space is advised to prevent the queue getting too long but if things pick up pace again then move over as soon as you can Going through the ❌ is a big no no as that means the lane is closed to all traffic, except emergency vehicles or those assisting the emergency services (like recovery vehicles for the incident)

At 3:30 you are wrong. The lorry did nothing wrong. The camper van shouldn't brake so hard to enter the slip road. That's why there is a slip road, so you won't brake hard snd block the live lane, he should keep his 50-55mph speed, get in the slip road and brake there. I am an HGV driver and every day I see stupid people to lower their speed to 30mph on the motorway to take the exit. That lorry had nowhere to go (there is a car on the second lane) and if you notice it pulls a very heavy load. When you are heavy you might need a mile to accelerate from 40 to 56mph that is the max speed for the lorries. Edit, I just saw again and again the video to make sure I am not wrong. If you notice the lorry at the second lane is on 56mph, and overtakes everybody so easily. That means that the camper van drop is speed below 40, that is not acceptable. It's not illegal but not acceptable and he may cause an accident. The same way as you are in the hard shhoulder and he HAVE to accelarate to 50mph before you move to the first lane.

I asked ChatGPT to write a story... "Hey ChatGPT, write me a story about a naughty Fiat 500:" And this is it what it came up with: Here is a children's story about a naughty Fiat 500: Zippy's Mischievous Adventures Zippy was a little red Fiat 500 who lived in a crowded city. He was a cheeky car who loved having fun and getting into mischief whenever he could. One sunny morning, Zippy's owner Mrs. Miller took him out for a drive to run some errands. "Now Zippy, you be a good little car today," she said as she put her shopping bags in his tiny trunk. But as soon as they started driving, Zippy had other ideas. When they stopped at a red light, Zippy suddenly revved his engine loudly. "Vroom vroom!" he called out, making Mrs. Miller jump. Some pedestrians looked over in surprise. "Zippy! Mind your manners," Mrs. Miller scolded. But the naughty Fiat just giggled. Later, they drove through a big puddle and Zippy made sure to splash lots of dirty water all over a man waiting at the bus stop. "Hey, watch it!" the man yelled as Zippy zoomed away, laughing mischievously. Next, they parked at the grocery store and Mrs. Miller went inside to shop. When she came back with her groceries, she gasped. Poor Zippy had rolled himself right into a big mud puddle and was completely covered in grime! "Oh Zippy, you ARE a naughty one!" Mrs. Miller said, trying not to smile as she wiped off his muddy headlights. On the drive home, Zippy continued being a rascal. He blew raspberries at fancy cars at stoplights. He squirted windshieldwiper fluid at unsuspecting pigeons. He played his music so loud that people covered their ears as they passed by. Finally, they made it home and Mrs. Miller unloaded her cheeky little car. "You sure kept me on my toes today, Zippy!" She gave him a kiss on his dusty hood. "But I wouldn't want you any other way." From that day on, Zippy the Fiat continued finding ways to cause good-natured chaos wherever he went. He was a naughty little car, but that's why everyone loved him!

Dear God. Thaf was even more boring and inconsequential than the comments made by LDC. There is no law or Highway Code rule that says you cannot use the available road as long as you don't inconvenience other road users. LDC was not inconvenienced in the slightest so his and your moans are quite unwarranted.

when it comes to this backwards inside outside lane nonsense, when you have a 3 lane roudnabout, do you call the outer lane, closest to the outter edge of the roundabout the "inside" lane and the one closest to the center of the roundabout, the inner most lane the "outside" lane?
