BAD TIME to move to Vancouver? || problems with Vancouver

Hello there!
We've recently moved to Vancouver and I'm trying to understand it here better. There are soooo many things I love about Vancouver, but there are also some pretty big problems with Vancouver.
I'm starting a discussion, so please let me know your thoughts!

It seems to me that literally all of the problems you have in Vancouver you had in NZ as well, and even worse health worries and costs in USA . I think the whole world now is geared towards people who can afford health care privately, and don’t have to worry about the cost of accomodation. My heart goes out to you about the wait for your child to be seen by a medical consultant.

I've never had any problems getting access to a doctor or daycare for my kids in NZ. But, there is a waiting list for specialists for kids/adults sometimes around 2 weeks to 4 months depending on the diagnoses of the patient. I've never had to wait longer than 8 weeks for an Op and I've never heard of a child/adult waiting for 2 years. The crime rate is low in NZ and access to general services is good but the cost of living and accommodation is not great, I'm sure Becca knows this.

The housing market (while similar) is more crushing to us here because in NZ we couldn’t even think about buying until we were residents whereas here we could buy today if we could afford it! But I don’t even think ten years of saving would get us there. I wish the medical system here had more of a private option. Because so many more rich people would opt for that plan and leave more room for us poor folk to get the help we need lol

Similar issues as here especially with the medical system. Families have long waits to see specialists, it's very frustrating. Vancouver looks amazing.

The more hikes and camping trips I do the more I fall in love with Vancouver 😂 let’s just ignore the rest.

How much would a private specialist consultation cost? I know it's not a massive cost here and if you need to get help or advice sooner it might be an option. My daughter had to do this for her boy. We have private health insurance for this very reason.

We’re looking into that. Still a wait and expensive but less of a wait and might be worth it.

It's almost like you'd have to arrange daycare before even getting pregnant. On a lighter note though, I like your top 😊

It's interesting to hear that there are problems in Canada which are similar to New Zealand. We are told by some politicians and journalists that it's solely a NZ issue and the present government is to blame. It's a general election year so the voices are loud!

It’s not a problem in my hometown lol. And everyone drives - no public transport at all. On the other hand the population is faaaar smaller (and it’s Texas so they can build massive roads whenever they feel like it)

I used to be a nurse in Vancouver from 2014-2018. Before I left, there were a lot more nurses willing and able to work in Vancouver and surrounding areas. But due to the cost of living, the stress from the pandemic and v requirements... it pushed a lot of nurses away from Vancouver and surrounding areas. Also, I have a friend who has a husband and two kids.. they saved $100,000.00 and even then, they weren't able to buy a home there .. and this was back in 2019/2020. So they left for the interior, which is def more affordable. Lastly, back in 2017, I tried to get pre approved for a mortgage with an $80k/year income... and the bank told me I qualified for nothing 😂. Oh one more thing, the wait times re: healthcare aren't just in BC. Some of my family in Sask are on extensive wait times for medical concerns that require immediate attention/care. But they simply... just have to wait. Broke my heart to hear their struggles when I visited them this summer 😢. I wish Canada had a two tier system like Aus, I reckon Canadians would embrace it!🎉

I don’t understand why they wouldn’t have a two tier system here! It seems like it would benefit everyone. And it is heartbreaking for anyone in any situation to have to wait and wait for HELP. It’s inhumane. I guess we actually have no hope of buying a home 🤷🏼‍♀️ I need to let that dream keep shriveling up and dying.

In Ontario, I think they had some kind of 2 tier system back in the 80s because I remember having to pay a bit for my obstetrician and birth of my first child. I think it was on top of what the government provided so it was a bit of extra private care if you could afford it, but there was an outcry in latter years about that system being unfair to those who couldn’t afford it so that is why we are where we are in our medical system.
