The only thing more hilarious than the asthma cigs for children over 6 was the throat-clearing at the gum massager!😂

"Asthma" Cigarettes are an actual thing. They're usually mentholated or with Cloves. They're supposed to do the same job a Neti Pot does with water. Even the way it's inhaled and exhaled is different than smoking tobacco or cannabis

I remember back when they had a hair removal product out called "Nads". It was a kind of cold waxing product you spread on your legs and pits with a tongue depressor, placed a cloth over it, then pulled the cloth away sharply. It pulled the hair out by the roots. It also worked if you had a unibrow, sideburns or hairy arms. It was made in Australia by a woman who's daughter had excess hair. She concocted it in her kitchen out of all food grade ingredients. That was their big selling point, that you could EAT the stuff if you wanted to because it was all natural. She named it Nads, which was the nickname for her daughter Natalie, who the product was originally made for. They had infomercials for it here in the states, but the name was such a bad one that it never took off, despite actually being a good product. I haven't seen the adds in a LONG time, and I don't know if they're still in business, or whether they ever changed that unfortunate name.

I remember Ayds. They were little cubes of very high fiber "candy" you nibbled with a big glass of water. They came in several different flavors and you got a relatively huge amount in the box. This was one of the first mass marketed diet aid and it was very popular. At least until AIDS came along. I always felt bad for the company that manufactured them. Interesting thing about Wella Kolestral: In the 1960s, all us bleached blondes were urged to use it to keep our hair silky and soft. Wella sold their product in small tubes for a good bit of money. If we'd only known to keep walking on over to the "Ethnic Hair Products" section, we could have bought a huge tub of cholesterol cream for the same price. Queen Helene makes wonderful stuff!!
In the UK, as well as the slimming tablets Ayds, Boots the Chemist also had a line of products from the elderly and disabled called Aids. In my local branch was a large sign saying "You can get Aids here." and they were remarkably slow to remove it.

One never knows what will become a joke and what will be okay. Remember when the iPad was first introduced and people joked that it sounded like a feminine hygiene product? SNL even had a fake commercial about the Pro version, the Max iPad. Then it came out and no one ever thought of that connotation again. Other products were less fortunate. LOL.
I remember back in the late 90s (when I was 20 or so) I used to get Lillian Vernon and Harriet Carter catalogs in the mail to my new apartment. I always thought they were for older people with their diabetic socks, walkers, and tall toilet seats. But they had some other neat kitchen gadgets and stuff. But it took me a while to figure out the little massager that straps to your fingertip. They always showed a lady using it on her temples for headaches. The day I figured it out, I was grossed out thinking they were selling them to old ladies. 😂😂

The "Bone Fone" brings back memories. Back in the 80's, a friend of mine drove a city bus. He used a Bone Fone to listen to music while on-the-job. It allowed him to hear his music without disturbing the passengers, or violating safety by wearing headphones. It also helped that he usually worked the night shift, on one of the sparsely used lines.

My grandmother had a "Climax" brand meat grinder. I think it was from the 1930s. Also, more recently, there is a brand of spray whip cream called "Affair"; I've bought it at the local restaurant supply store.

The "Climax" meat grinders can occasionally be found at garage sales. They're solid. Mine is from the 50s or 60s.
The funniest one I've seen is the French "Pschitt" soda. While it works in the original country, I heard that they failed miserably when they tried to break into the US market as pretty much every American couldn't figure out why anybody would drink something with a name like that 😂. And BTW, it was pretty good and tasted a bit like Orange Crush.

Lots of products have names that don’t translate well in other languages. One of the case studies I remember from business school was the failure of the Chevy Nova in South America. Apparently nobody wanted a car whose name in Spanish translates to “It Doesn’t Go”.

@edbecka233

I spent a year stationed in Schweinfurt, FRG. The Germans are fanatics about American Western movies and TV shows, and one of their favorites is The Lone Ranger. What you were hearing is the Lone Ranger's catchphrase, "Hi-ho Silver, away!" The German for "go" or "travel" is "fahrt". Hence, "Mach schnell, Silber, FAHRT!"
Oh, I well remember Ayds....back in the 60s my mom used to keep a box of them on the top shelf of the kitchen. Since they were chocolate-flavored I sometimes would climb onto the counter (I was maybe 5 or 6 at the time) and eat a few...they weren't bad-tasting (we didn't get candy very often), but they didn't suppress my appetite :) I collect old newspapers and magazines, so I have ran across the occasional weird ad, like the gun ad with a little girl with her dolly in bed, holding the pistol with the words on her nightshirt, "Daddy says it won't hurt us". But I have a 12/25/1886 issue of the Columbus Evening Dispatch with one doozy of a product ad. It was for "Sexine Cream", illustrating what the product was for, with a rather pallid man's face with a droopy 'stache, and the same man, full of vigor and his dic-er, 'stache quite erect. The late 1800s-early 1900s were full of nonsense like that.
