Backyard teahouses for meditation, guest cottage, homeoffice

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

When a Silicon Valley executive asked architect Robert Swatt to design teahouses for his backyard, Swatt wasn't sure where to begin, but his client explained that he wanted one for tea, one for life and one for work.
Swatt created 8 or 9 models trying to determine the ideal shape for these tiny houses and finally settled on the simplest design. All glass with steel and concrete for support, each tea house floats over the landscape. Cantilevered in place, the buildings help preserve the delicate root systems of the surrounding native oaks.
Swatt says they've received many requests to recreate these nearly transparent structures, even as stand-alone tiny houses, and he says it could work as a modern prefab. "We could do something like this, if you keep it down to something you could drive on the highway and you could lift into place with a crane, you could probably do that and probably save a lot of money too by building it in a factory."

Very similar to Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House (1945-51) and Phillip Johnson's Glass House (1949). I like this a little better. Having the three functions in three separate buildings makes it a little more functional, and the concrete cores provide better grounding. The forested and bushy hillside landscape offers some shade and privacy. The Farnsworth House is so disdainful of the environment that it only reluctantly allows its feet to touch the ground. It also ignorantly sits on a flood plain, whereas it could easily have been sited on higher ground. It got flooded as a result. The Glass House sits on a manicured lawn, but appears uncomfortable doing so. Neither one offers enough privacy to actually live in. Obviously, without kitchen facilities this isn't a complete home, it's only a retreat from a larger home devoted to entertaining. Thus, it is more frankly honest about the impracticality of its minimalism for true residential use.

When he said "There is tea" and pointed at the shelves over the counter sink I thought, "No, there ARE teas." // The pavilions are a nice balance of concrete, steel and glass with unfinished wooden floors. I wish there had been some footage of them at night. Outside lighting in the trees? // Those skylights could have been designed to clean themselves with rain runoff. As they are now, how do they handle water collecting in their frames?

This is a Mies Van Der Rohe Glass House, pitched as traditional Japanese. The entire theme and philosophy is what Mies Van Der Rohe intended, using glass to blend into nature. It's strange that he doesn't give him credit. Also, I'd use it to park my 1968 convertible, Ferrari 250 GT California special.

For me to do this I'd need the windows to have an electronic dimming film to make it transparent to opaque like a window in a Boeing 787. Or Motorized ceiling retracting window shade/blind. Aesthetically I think the Shades/Blinds would look nicer but for space saving the dimming film/gel whatever fits the bill nicer. I personally would choose either one what ever my contractor suggested but the idea of multiple "tea" houses for specific reasons is brilliant and I'm sure it could work on flattish land too. Each house could be on it's own solar system making it easier to work with, and if one house needed extra it could draw from the unused power of the other houses. Water and sewage would just require the water to split off to the houses.
