Oh man, I needed this today. I’m currently sitting in front of my computer frantically editing to have this next video done before I leave for a camping trip with my family. It’s definitely a grind, it’s honestly a full time job on top of my full time job, but I ABSOLUTELY love it. I love the entire process of it and I really just want to be as helpful as I can for people that are wanting to do some of the same things that I love doing. Thank you for the comment, it’s very appreciated!

Since we ended up getting 10 chicks this year to add to our flock, we converted an old popup camper into a large chicken coop for our birds. It's big enough that I even have a storage room in it for their feed and bags of bedding!

For anyone buying chicks or chickens...add the mother apple cider vinegar/ pre chopped up cloves of garlic( that have been sat on counter just enough to have air hit it) and add some lime to there water. This is going to keep your chickens staying healthy and not sick. I add this to all of my chickens water, even my brand new chicks after they have hatched. If they get sick this will also make them better. I hope this helps anyone. Also dont hate till you try it. It works wonders.

We added 10 Buff Orpingtons & 2 Rhode Island Reds to our existing flock this year. These girls are great fun and are really curious, they come running when they see me in the yard. I am in the process of expanding thier coup & run to keep them happy & comfortable. We started keeping chickens 2 years ago bcs eggs were in short supply & expensive but now I don't know what we would do without them since they are great little recycling machines that help our garden grow more food for us. I like to keep dual purpose birds so that we have meat & eggs, it's not just cougars that like chicken, LOL.

Chickens are fun. If you start with chicks be aware it is going to be some time before they lay. Depends on breed I have Barnvelders they can take 8 months. I feed them weeds out of my yard. Fresh veggies cukes cantoloupes. Watermelon if I find one cheap. Black soldier flies are good, but pricey. Chickens do however like live minnows. They go ape when those. little fish flop around. I find worms and they take them straight from my hands. I spoil my birds. I also add a tablespoon of molasses and apple cider vinegar to their their water. I got fat happy birds. But I can handle all of them with no fuss.

Your household cougar. 😂 I can't build anything nor do I have anyone who can so I bought a new doghouse and poured a whole bunch of money into making it into a coop but what I didn't figure into the equation was the breed I had chosen meant they were going to be pretty large hens. They're 8 Black Australorps so I realized that they were too big for the dog house I had so I got my daughter's large dog crate and I covered it with a tarp and put two tomato stakes in the bars and that's where they roost. It sits on a pallet elevated off the ground. The front is of course uncovered. I'll buy a thermal crate cover for the winter. But it works. Their food and water is outside as is the nesting boxes for when they start laying coming up soon. They are comfortable and that's all that matters. They have a covered chicken run and except for the gentle neighborhood dog that seems to get into everyone's yards somehow they are living there best lives.

We have a fairly large fenced in backyard, we are building the coop and run. Do you just let your chickens free range when yoy are with them? I am new to chickens, i am worried about them staying in the yard and being safe during the day if im not outside.

If we are outside with them we let them free range! We like to get them as much time as possible out there. If we aren’t with them they stay in the run! We have hawks and such to worry about that we want to be able to keep an eye on 😂

During the day you should be fine just watch for dogs and make sure they have cover from hawks, a rooster will sound off if predators come near. Night is way more of a concern, just this morning I shot an opossum that I trapped last night, that bastard killed around 35 chicks the night before. Also a week earlier my dogs woke me up(3am) to another opossom they had in a tree but I shot that one before he got any chickens.

Thank you for your helpful videos! We have 1 hen and she’s about to lay. We just finished building her coop. We live in Phoenix, Arizona and wanted to ask what do you think is the best container for water? Arizona is scorching hot and don’t don’t know what other container is best besides plastic? IAlso, is it normal for hens to keep their mouths open to cool off, even if there’s cool water available to her?

Even if there is cold water it wouldn’t be uncommon to see them with their beaks open! That’s a tough one, here when it’s over 100 we throw ice in there for them but it honestly only helps so much. The best you can do is ice or refill it often!

I also have 1 hen that lays and will be adding 3 more. I found a great tip elsewhere about adding about 2 bricks to a large tin baking pan and add cold water. It actually keeps the water cool even in our hot triple digit Texas heat, I have been amazed ever since lol. Give it a try!
