Ғылым және технология
This is a revised complete part 1 & 2 of the original video we have on backing up your iPhone to an external drive. Here we cover the back up and restore of an iPhone A-Z. We are running macOS Big Sur and iOS 13.

I just completed the coding on my imac. It was Explained well, making the process easy. It works great. Thanks so much.
Thank you soooooo much for the video, it couldn't be better!!! Worked perfectly! Saved my life really!
I tried so many other videos and none worked except for your video, thank you so much!
Thanks man. You are a lifesaver. Simple and straight to the point. You just got a new sub.
First person I’ve read/watched who has steps that actually work! None other were this concise. Thank you for this 🙏
So many tutorials claiming this - only one that actually does. THANK YOU.
I wish everyone know how to explain things properly like you. Thank you
Apple has the simplest software yet its a nightmare to do simple stuff like this, the ultimate love/hate relationship !

Best video! Finally solved the issue. Thank you!!
This was very helpful, thank you so much!
Thanks a lot, bro!! On iPhone 12 Pro Max, iOS 15.2 it friggin WORKED!!! And it went straight to the external HDD!! AWESOME!!! 😀👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙏🏻👍🏻
Thank you so much !!! This is so helpful !
Thanks for making the video. I tried following the website that came up in a google search and had no luck. The difference is you manually make the directories in terminal. Is this a requirement? And also do you have to make an backup first to local mobile sync or can you create the symlinks and backup first time to an external?
Great Video dude!
Thank u for sharing ... i have mac pro catalina every thing goes fine with me but there is no backup in "Manage Backups" after i backed up my iphone successfully
saved in to my favourite list 👍🏼
Thanks a lot for this man!
Great vid, 1 question though, can i just copy past my backup to the external drive without doing all the main steps and later restore from the external drive, ( im not migrating my current backup to a external drive i just want to move my older back up to clear some space in hard disk ) im worrying about restoring part :(
Very helpful! Thank you so much.
worked perfectly. thank you very much.
I have an issue/question, I followed all steps and everything seems to have worked fine but when doing the backup, the backup data is heavier than what's on the iPhone. For example, My iPhone has a total of 249Gb used, when backing up to the HardDrive it has already taken 360Gb and it is only halfway done. Why could this be? Any recommendations? Could it be the way the Harddrive is formatted? I use a 1TB Harddrive by WD Elements
THANKSSSS I need to say you just saved my life!!!
Thanks! This is a great video. I really like this. I want to backup one iphone to my external drive, and backup another one up to my MacBook Pro Catalina. Once I create the link, will the backups go to their respective appropriate locations depending on whether I've plugged my external drive in or left it unplugged? Thanks again!
Thanks man, you are a legend!
Followed instructions was finally able to create a backup.. someone should write a script to make this happen.. Thanks for making the video.
Great Guy, a question if possible: the backup is made on my external HD but in the iPhone screen it's not displayed; I get "last backup on Mac: never". How can i do to fix this problem? Thanks
Backup was successfully completed and I can see a new folder in the external hardrive for inside my backup folder. But my mac is showing "No Backups found" and the "Restore Backup" option is read only. Need help to figure out how I can restore my backup. Did I miss any steps?
Thank you for the VERY informative AND instructive video! I’m 71 and relatively new to the Macbook, so this is going to help me immensely I'm sure. Unfortunately I have one hurdle to overscome. I had installed the Mac version of my iMazing program before trying to do the backup from the Mac OS Big Sur. Now I can’t get the Mac OS to do the backup. I’ll try and work that out. Hopefully if I uninstall the iMazing, the Mac OS will see the iphone and then do a backup as you explained. Question, I thought I saw you had a Synology NAS connected on one of your other videos (I recently purchased and connected one also). I wondered if you made these two iPhone backup videos to an external USB because a USB drive is more common but you actually do your backups to your Synology? If so, is the backup to a Synology drive the same except that you designate the shared folder on the Synology instead of the USB? You explained a symbolic link (new to me) folder so I’ll be doing that also. One more Please? - I will be using my Macbook to backups my iphone and iPad, my wifes' iphone and iPad, and my adult sons' iPad. How do I designate each of the 5 backups from each other to the Mac so it doesn’t overwrite the others when doing the backups? When I connect each different device to my MacBook, will it know and create or update that particular devices previous backup? Thank You so Very Very much for helping me work through getting this done right. It’s one of the two main reasons I saved and spent all that money to got the Synology.
It worked for me! thank you very much!
Do I need to encrypt to put the data to the external hard drive? This is my first time backing up my iPhone to prepare for the arrival of the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Thank you, this worked perfectly!
hey! i want to ask whether if i plug my external hard drive, now with this symbolic link, into another macbook - will it recognise the past backups i've done with the original macbook as well?
Hi, so if I managed to change the dictionary to an SSD with ExFAT format and I've successfully created a backup there, will I be able to restore it to my iphone? I'm concerned since the format I used is ExFat and not MacExtendedJournal
Hello thank you so much for the video, I follow steps but when I plug in new iPhone to restore it does now show back and says it’s never been backed up? Any suggestions ?
I want to backup both my iPad and iPhone on external drive. The Backup shortcut in MobileSync folder was created when I backed up my iPad. Do I delete this shortcut through Finder before I proceed with iPhone back up?
Fantastic Guidelines ! I just want to know if the external HDD is a Time Machine drive , will it be any conflict for back up ? And i tried its happening but the backup is taking forever ! Plz Help and suggest what should i do on this basis !
Very clear video, but it doesn't work with me :( I'm searching for a solution for weeks now but nothing works. I have macOS Big Sur on my Mac and iOS 14.3 on my iPhone. The thing is that I don't have a MobileSync folder in the Application Support folder. And if I add them myself it doesn't work either. Can you please help me?
Do you have to have enough free space on your computer? cuz my computer kept indicating not enough space in my computer even if the hard drive is pretty much empty.
I’m stuck at the mkdir part. My MacBook says it can’t find the directory, so I can’t create the folder in my external drive. any help would be great. I have Mac OS 11.5.2.
How can I do this but on windows and instead of C: Drive (little space) I need it in D: Drive (way more space)?
I moved my backup back to my local drive so I could restore my phone. When I plug my phone in and try to restore back up, it won’t show up. Any ideas of what’s happening? I desperately need that backup 😭
I followed this video last year and backed up everything on my crucial x8. 1 year all went smooth. Today My x8 crucial crashed so I had to format it. Now again should I follow this whole video to take back ups on this same drive? Or I need not do anything and backup directly? Secondly if I want to back up on my laptop directly can I do it? Or I need to make some changes?
@TechCoreDuo, thanks for the amazing video. I hope your video reaches others like me who bought the base versions of macs. I hope apple doesn't patch this vulnerability (thats how they force people into buying icloud subscriptions).
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but can you restore an iphone from a backup on the external drive? Without moving the ios backup's back into the internal drive. Thank you.
Hi Thanks for the video it is of great help. When I am trying to create a backup Folder in the External Hard Drive I am getting a error saying no Such file or directory. Could you please help as to how I fix this. My hard drive is named as back drive as well. Thanks.
Thanks for help, much appreciate it
Thanks for this video. I was able to successfully do it but now I got a new external drive. If I move all my data from my old external drive (the one I had the Terminal set up done as you explained) to the new external drive, will I need to do the Terminal coding/logic all over again? Hope you can reply to this...thank you in advance!

I am in kinda same boat. My Ssd crashed so I have formatted it. Wondering will I have to do all the coding again or it’s not needed?. What did you do. Secondly if I don’t do anything and just backup on my laptop will it happen?
1. If there’s two separate logins/users on mac. Do I need to do this step on the other user? 2. I hit back up now and it did it’s process. How ever when the back up was done, it wasn’t showing on “Manage backup” but it shows on the back up drive. 3. So I hit “back up now” again and it did not create a new folder for the new backup, but instead it added it to the first backup.
Does this store all backs on external drive frrom noe on, leaving internal ssd free of backups?
Hi, I am trying to create a directory on my external hard drive using terminal but i am getting an error saying that permission denied. I checked the permissions and it shows i have read and write access to external hard drive.. any suggestions?
Is there any specific process to revert back to having it backup to your mac? This was a temporary need for me and it worked very well, but now I have free space on my mac I would like to revert back to normal way of doing this.
A small problem... It won't create multiple backup's. The new back up replaces the old one, and I got plenty of space on my external drive. Is there a solution?
Can you still do this if you choose 'back up your most important data on your iPhone on to iCloud' instead of 'back up all of the data to this Mac'?
Do you have any idea why the "Full Disk Access" isnt listed for me under Privacy?
“Could not back up the iPhone” cause not enough space on Mac... ???

I don't know why my Restore Backup button is disabled. I can see the backup is in the Manage Backups. Will the restore button enabled after I plug in another new iPhone?
i have a iphone and two iPads would i have to do same procedure for each one ?
You are the best!
Would you change anything if you have more than one device? I have an iPhone and an IPad.
Hello I watched the video but after clicking “back up now”, my MacBook pro (2015, 128GB) gives me an error message “Could not back up the iPhone "iphone” because an error occurred while reading from or writing to the iPhone.”. What should I do?
PLEASE HELP!! :( everything is working fine until i'm doing that ln -s command and it gave me this prompt " illegal option" what to do?
While the backup works and seeing that it’s going to my external hard drive. How come it keeps failing on me saying that I don’t have enough space on Mac. Even though it’s all going to hard drive?

Hi bro! Very clear instructions! But I do have a question. Can I do multiple backups with different iPhones with this external hard drive? Should I do and follow the same to create a different folder for a different iPhone backup? Please help. Thanks!
Hi. It backed up successfully to my HDD. But when I connect a new iPhone and click on “Restore” it won’t show any backups on the list. I can see the backup folder on the hdd and is almost 600gb, but the Mac is not seeing it. What can I do?
I got everything to work, but now I’m trying to restore my new phone from the backup, and it’s saying there’s not enough space on my phone. It’s the same 256gb phone. Do you know why it’s not working? Is it necessary to transfer the backup back to my Mac in order to restore the iPhone? It looked like you restored straight from the external drive.
Thank you soooo much!
when i backup my phone is keeps coming up as corrupted now, you know any chance what the issue is? thank you
When I tried to link the Backup folder with the other folder on SSD I am getting an error saying Illegal Option in terminal. Please help. Thank you
What external hard drives do you recommend
l finished the coding all folders were but when l try to back up l get an error message that” there is no enough space to do the back up” yet my HDD is 1TB….DO YOU HAVE A SOLUTION TO THIS ISSUE..
:( but when you delete the backup files from the Mac ( to free space) - then re-plug the iPhone to Restore the backup from the external drive .. you can't. I have to manually drag the files AGAIN from the external drive back to the Mac. What's the point of creating an symbilic link then ? HELP!
Hi, can I restore the original folder for the backup? If yes, should I do the procedure in reverse?
For some reason when i try to complete the last part to connect backup to external, it says that its an illegal action. Im not sure what im doing wrong here. I will say that i use this SSD as my time machine, if that matters at all.
Hello Friend, Thankyou i was able to do that with the help of your video. Can you please tell how to go back to the factory setting as now i am trying to do it on mac and its says backup corrupted. Looking forward for you reply Thankkyou
I did the process on the Hard Drive that I also use for Time Machine and it seems to give some problems: 1) It won't let me back up my iPhone. 2) Now it also won't let me do a regular TimeMachine Backup of the MacBook saying disk is full although there are 500GB of free space, more than double my MacBook's capacity... Anyone knows the reasons behind this? Or a safe way to undo the process of the video? I'm definitely not an expert with Terminal... Thanks in advance!
I keep getting this cd: no such file directory: /users/chris/Libary/Application\ Support/MobileSync Any ideas?
Thank you, man!
What worked for me was mounting the external drive at /Users//Library/Application Support/MobileSync, so it replaces the actual backup folder when it is connected. You can make this happen every time you connect the drive using Automator.

what are those terminal key you typed in ? its so blury i cant see it clearly
While entering the ln command I get a "no such file or directory' error. Please help!
when I go to mkdir /Volumes etc etc it says no such file or directory . what has gone wrong
Thank you sir! One more thing though, can I delete the files(such as photos/videos) on my iphone after the backup? I tried double check on the external drive but all the files are a bit weird, there’s no familiar photo/video format in there.

I actually have the same question on this. It would be great to receive a response this matter :)
Most complete back up video i have seen! Thanks for this, cannot wait to get my m1 and get this done. Just one question, if i use external ssd like a x8 from crucial which is very fast - is the backing up ios device to external ssd speed still slower than backing up ios device directly to mac? Or its more-o-less same.
@TechCoreDuo

My guess is pretty much the same because the bottle neck is on the iphone side. Even the iPhone 12 still transfers data at USB 2.0 speed.
thank you!!
Yours was the only easily found source with explicit instructions on how to do this. Even then, I had to look up some things I was not familiar with, such as what "Terminal" is. Could not have achieved this any other way. I guess Apple does not want to add this functionality to their computers, they want to sell ICloud storage.
You're a genius.
It's 2021 and we're still using terminal commands?
‘Disk not ejected Properly’ Error keeps popping up. Any Solution?
Thank you!

Is there a way to restore this backup to the phone without iTunes?
Hello, thank you so much for this video. Unfortunately, the Backup folder in MobileSync was not replaced by the old iTunes-backup, rather it just added the old iTunes-backup to the MobileSync folder so I now have both the Backup and old iTunes-backup folders in MobileSync. The shortcut Backup is in MobileSync/Backup...thus the phone is still backing up up to my computer. Can I some how delete all I have done in Terminal and start again. Once again thank you for your excellent informative and helpful videos. Hoping you can reply...Kindest of regards. Dobbindobbin
